Best Consoles for RPGs: How to Choose Between Switch 2, PS5 and Xbox Series X

If you want to play the same RPG on the go and on a TV, Nintendo Switch 2 is the clearest fit. For a home console, choose PS5 if Sony’s current ecosystem and PS4 compatibility suit the games you want; choose Xbox Series X if its backward-compatible library or Game Pass fits you better. There is no evidence-backed universal winner for RPGs, so check your must-play titles before buying.

How to choose a console for RPGs

Start with the games, then decide how you want to play them. Make a short list of RPGs you consider essential and check each one’s platform, edition, compatibility, and current availability. A console’s general reputation or a large all-games compatibility figure does not establish how many RPGs it supports.

  1. List your must-play RPGs. Check the publisher or platform listing for each title rather than assuming it is available on every console.
  2. Choose your play style. Decide whether handheld play is important or whether you will mainly play on a TV.
  3. Check older games individually. Confirm that the exact edition you own or plan to buy works on the new console, including any disc or digital requirements.
  4. Compare ongoing access and storage. If you expect to use a subscription or build a large digital library, verify current catalog terms and storage-expansion options.

Which console fits your RPG priorities?

Priority Best-matched option What to know
Play at home and away Nintendo Switch 2 It works as a handheld and can output video to a TV through its dock. Battery life varies by game.
Play PS4 games on a current Sony console PlayStation 5 Sony says PS5 supports over 8,500 PS4 games. That is a platform-wide figure, not an RPG count; check individual games.
Access older Xbox generations or consider a subscription library Xbox Series X Microsoft describes compatibility across four Xbox generations and a changing Game Pass catalog. Check current game availability and terms.
Pick based on the RPGs you already own PS5 or Xbox Series X, depending on your library Verify the specific game and whether your copy is digital or on disc before choosing.

Nintendo Switch 2: best fit for portable and TV play

Switch 2’s defining difference is its hybrid design: it has a built-in screen for handheld play and supports TV output through its dock. Nintendo’s U.S. specifications list a 7.9-inch LCD with 1920×1080 handheld resolution, HDR10 and VRR up to 120 Hz. Maximum TV output is 3840×2160 (4K) at 60 fps. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance tests.

Nintendo estimates battery life at approximately 2–6.5 hours, depending on the game. Treat that as a variable manufacturer estimate rather than a guaranteed session length. The console has 256 GB of internal storage and supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB for expansion. Nintendo says other microSD cards can be used only to copy screenshots and videos from the original Switch, not as equivalent game-storage expansion. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 specifications.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps

  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Check older Switch games before relying on compatibility

Nintendo says Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but warns that some titles may be unsupported or have partial functionality issues. Its compatibility summary is marked current as of June 5, 2025; consult the individual game page for the latest status rather than treating that dated summary as a live guarantee. Check Nintendo Switch game compatibility.

PlayStation 5: a home-console choice with PS4 compatibility

PS5 is a strong option if the games you want are in Sony’s ecosystem or if access to your PS4 library matters. Sony says players can play over 8,500 PS4 games on PS5. This is Sony’s stated total for PS4 games, not an independently counted RPG catalog. Game Boost can improve frame rates in select PS4 games, but that does not mean every compatible title performs identically. See Sony’s PS5 page.

Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Con - Handheld Gaming Console
  • 6.2” LCD screen
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends

Sony also describes DualSense features including haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in supported games. Their presence may matter to you, but support varies by game. Confirm that the particular RPG you want is available for PS5 or compatible as a PS4 game; backward compatibility should not be treated as a guarantee of identical features or performance.

Xbox Series X: backward compatibility and a changing subscription catalog

Xbox Series X is a strong home-console option if the games you want include older Xbox titles or if a subscription library is part of your plan. Microsoft says Series X is compatible with thousands of games across four Xbox generations. That is a broad manufacturer compatibility claim, not a count of RPGs; check the specific title and the requirements for playing your copy. See Microsoft’s Xbox Series X information.

Microsoft describes Game Pass as offering hundreds of games, but the catalog and subscription terms can change. A game appearing in a subscription catalog is access under its current terms, not permanent ownership or a promise it will remain included. Check the current listing for any RPG you are considering. Microsoft discusses backward compatibility and Game Pass on its Xbox site.

What the headline numbers do—and do not—tell you

Manufacturer figures help explain hardware and platform features, but they are not a like-for-like comparison of RPG libraries. Nintendo’s screen, resolution, and battery figures describe Switch 2 hardware; Sony’s over-8,500 figure covers PS4 games playable on PS5; Microsoft’s “thousands” spans Xbox games across four generations. None establishes which console has the most RPGs or which is best for every player. Compare the exact games you want instead.

Before you buy

  • Confirm that each must-play RPG is available for your chosen console and in the edition you want.
  • For older games, check the exact compatibility status and whether your copy is on disc or digital.
  • If you plan to rely on Game Pass or another subscription, verify the current catalog entry and terms.
  • If you buy digital games, consider how much storage your library needs. For Switch 2 game storage, Nintendo specifies microSD Express, not standard microSD expansion.
  • For Switch 2, weigh handheld convenience against the game-dependent battery estimate and verify compatibility for any older Switch RPG you plan to play.
