A more powerful drill is not automatically the better choice. For screwdriving or drilling, the right combination of tool type, torque, speed, gear and accessory can make the job easier to control—and help prevent damage. The title doesn’t identify a particular tool or task, so the drill examples below illustrate the broader lesson rather than claim to recount a specific incident.
Why extra power can work against you
Power-tool performance is not a single number. Torque helps turn a screw or bit, but too much torque for a small screw or soft material can strip the screw head or damage the workpiece. Speed affects how a bit cuts, and the wrong gear or accessory can make a tool harder to manage.

Bosch’s UK DIY guidance puts it plainly: “Remember, torque isn’t everything – speed and chuck size also matter when choosing the right tool.” Its recommendations are guidance for Bosch’s product family, not universal capacity limits. Bosch’s cordless drill guide explains how tool types and example applications differ.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Start with what you need to do, the material, and the size of the screw or hole. A higher voltage rating alone does not establish that a tool is suitable: tool type, control, compatible bits and the demands of sustained work matter too.
#1 Best Overall
- Lightweight design fits into tight areas
- High performance motor delivers 300 unit watts out (UWO) of power ability completing a wide range of applications
- High speed transmission delivers two speeds (0-450 & 1,500 rpm) for a range of fastening and drilling applications
- 1/2' single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength. Ergonomic handle delivers comfort and control
| Tool type | Typical role in Bosch’s guidance | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Screwdriver | Light screwdriving tasks. | Use where a drill’s broader capacity is unnecessary. |
| Drill driver | Screwdriving and drilling, with adjustable torque settings. | A useful option when you need to control screwdriving torque. |
| Combi drill | Drilling and screwdriving, with a hammer function for masonry. | Choose for the materials and hole sizes the specific tool supports. |
| Impact driver | Driving screws with impact action. | Check that its action and compatible accessories suit the task; it is not simply a more versatile drill. |
| SDS drill | More demanding masonry drilling in Bosch’s examples. | Consider for larger or harder masonry jobs where a standard drill may not be the appropriate tool. |
Bosch’s examples contrast lighter work with 12V tools and more demanding applications with 18V tools, while directing larger or harder masonry jobs toward SDS drills. Those are manufacturer examples, not universal limits for every brand or model. Check the capacity and instructions for the specific tool and accessory.
Set torque and speed for control
For screws, use the clutch as a limit
On a drill driver, the torque clutch can limit how much turning force is applied. Bosch says torque should reflect the material and screw size; a suitable setting can help prevent stripped heads and damaged material. Its technology guidance notes: “The ability to limit torque is important when driving screws into wood, for example.” The feature and its operation vary by model, so use the manual’s instructions and adjust carefully rather than treating one setting as right for every screw. Bosch’s torque-limiting explanation describes the principle.

For drilling, select gear and speed for the bit
Bosch describes low gear as suited to more powerful screwdriving and high gear as suited to drilling. The appropriate drilling speed also depends on the material and bit diameter; one speed is not right for every hole. Follow the tool and bit makers’ guidance instead of assuming that the fastest setting will finish the job best. Bosch’s drill FAQ covers speed selection and recoil torque.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the drill stalls or twists, stop
A stalled or binding bit can make the drill twist suddenly. DEWALT warns that a drill may stall if overloaded, causing a sudden twist. Don’t keep pulling the trigger to force it through.

- Release the trigger and remove the bit from the work, as DEWALT instructs.
- Work out why it stalled: check whether the tool, bit, material and technique are suitable for the task, and consult the tool’s manual.
- Use an appropriate bit and ease pressure as the bit approaches breakthrough. DEWALT identifies both as relevant drilling practices.
See DEWALT’s drill-stalling guidance (updated February 17, 2021) for its troubleshooting advice. Follow the specific tool’s manual and safe-use instructions; OSHA advises workers to learn proper tool use and safety practices in its tool-use guidance.

Choosing a tool that is unnecessarily powerful for a job can mean needless vibration exposure. But lower power is not automatically safer if it makes the task take much longer: the UK Health and Safety Executive says efficiency matters because a slow job can increase exposure time. Its advice is to select equipment suited to the task and consider both vibration and how efficiently the work gets done. The HSE’s equipment-selection guidance explains the trade-off.

Actual performance depends on more than the tool’s headline rating. Bosch Professional lists factors including the workpiece and accessory, selected gear, battery state, tool temperature and operator technique. If a tool seems weak or erratic, those conditions may matter alongside its rated capacity. Bosch Professional’s performance guidance describes these influences.
