If the Minecraft Launcher window will not appear on Windows 10 or 11, start by closing and reopening it, then check Windows and Microsoft Store updates. Next confirm that the same Microsoft account with the Minecraft license or applicable PC Game Pass access is signed in to the Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app. If the Launcher opens but has no Play button—or the game crashes after Play—the problem is at a different stage and needs a different check.
First identify where the launch fails
| What happens | What to check first |
|---|---|
| The Launcher window never appears | Try the Windows update, account, app-repair, and reinstall steps below. |
| The Launcher opens, but the Play button is missing | Check whether the signed-in Microsoft account owns Minecraft or has the applicable PC Game Pass access. |
| The game fails after you click Play | This is a game-launch failure, not necessarily a Launcher-opening fault. The steps here do not establish a fix for game crashes or Java runtime problems. |
Minecraft’s Launcher troubleshooting guidance identifies account sign-in and missing dependencies as considerations and recommends reinstalling when needed. It does not establish one cause or remedy that works for every setup.

Try the low-impact Windows checks
- Close and reopen the Launcher. Close the app, then open it again from the Start menu. If it is still running in the background, close it fully before retrying.
- Install available Windows updates. Open Windows Update in Settings and install available updates, following the prompts.
- Check Microsoft Store updates. Open Microsoft Store, go to Library, and check for updates. Minecraft says the Launcher should update automatically; if it has not, update it through the Store Library. Microsoft’s Microsoft Store app guidance likewise recommends reopening apps and checking for updates before moving to repair or reinstall steps.
Verify the Microsoft account and game license
Use the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft, or has the relevant PC Game Pass access, consistently in the Minecraft Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app. A mismatch can prevent the Launcher from showing the expected game access even when the app itself opens.
If the Launcher opens but the Play button is missing, Minecraft’s missing-Play-button guidance specifically recommends signing out and back in with the account that owns the game in both the Launcher and Store. Check the account before reinstalling: a missing license is not the same as an app that will not open.

Repair, reset, or reinstall the Launcher
On Windows, Microsoft recommends app repair or reset after reopening the app and checking for updates. The precise labels and Settings layout can vary by Windows release; use the installed-app options for the Minecraft Launcher, and try repair before reset where both are offered. Reset can remove app data, so be prepared to sign in again.
If the Launcher still will not open, reinstall it. Minecraft also recommends uninstalling and reinstalling to refresh Launcher files. Its installation guidance describes obtaining the Launcher through Microsoft Store, the Xbox app, or Minecraft.net. The Minecraft.net installer still requires a Microsoft Store login to install properly; follow the current on-screen prompts for your installation route.
See Microsoft’s app repair and reinstall steps, Minecraft’s download page, and its installation guidance for the current options.
Use WSReset only for a Microsoft Store-related problem
If installation through Microsoft Store or the Minecraft.net installer is affected, Minecraft’s installation guidance describes resetting the Store cache. Press Windows key + R, enter WSReset, and select OK. Treat this as a targeted Store-install troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed solution for every Launcher crash.

Know when these Windows steps do not apply
The guidance above is for Windows 10 and 11. Minecraft’s download page lists macOS and Linux downloads, but the specific opening-failure steps covered here are not established for those systems. For a Launcher that will not open on macOS or Linux, use Minecraft Support rather than applying Windows Store repair or cache-reset instructions.

Minecraft’s download FAQ advises checking for updates or contacting Minecraft Support when the Launcher will not open. If an error appears, record its exact wording or code and your operating system before contacting support. The sources available here do not establish code-specific remedies, so avoid trying fixes for a different error or for a game crash that happens only after pressing Play.
