If Microsoft Edge appears to close tabs when you download from DriveThruRPG (DTRPG), the exact cause is not established by the official troubleshooting guidance. First determine whether Edge itself closes, a download prompt disappears, or only particular tabs vanish. Then compare a DTRPG download with other files and test Edge’s profile, extensions, and download settings.
First identify what is closing
“Tabs closed” can describe different symptoms, and the troubleshooting path depends on which one you see:

- The entire Edge window disappears or Edge restarts: treat this as possible browser instability, not just a failed download.
- A save prompt or download panel disappears: focus first on the download flow, profile, and extensions.
- The DTRPG tab closes: note whether it happens as the download begins or after it finishes.
- Unrelated tabs close while Edge remains open: record that distinction. The official guidance reviewed does not explain this specific behavior.
If practical, capture a screenshot or short recording of the behavior and note the exact error or download status. Do not share account credentials or order details publicly.

Record the details and compare downloads
Before changing settings, note the operating system and version, Edge version from edge://settings/help, the DTRPG page or download route, file type, time and time zone, and any error message. DTRPG asks people contacting support to include the URL, date and time with time zone, operating system and version, browser and version, IP address, and a screenshot where possible. Use a small file for the initial comparisons. These comparisons help narrow the problem, but none proves a cause by itself:
- Try a small DTRPG file, then a different DTRPG file.
- Try downloading a file from another website.
- If you were downloading several files as a ZIP, try one file at a time.
- Compare your normal Edge profile with an InPrivate window or temporary new profile.
If only DTRPG downloads trigger the behavior, start with DTRPG’s session, extensions, and bulk-download checks. If downloads from multiple sites fail, check Edge’s download settings, permissions, security alerts, policies, and network instead. This is a diagnostic way to prioritize checks, not a confirmed explanation for tabs closing.
Test whether your Edge profile or extensions are involved
Try the same DTRPG download in an InPrivate window. If it works there, test a temporary new Edge profile as well. Microsoft says a successful attempt in InPrivate or a new profile can point to an extension interfering with downloads. In your regular profile, turn extensions off one at a time and retry to identify whether one changes the behavior.

DTRPG also recommends temporarily disabling extensions when its download checks do not resolve the issue. Its support article mentions security-extension conflicts, including Malwarebytes and McAfee, as examples it has encountered; that is a lead to test, not evidence that either product is installed or responsible in your case.
Check DriveThruRPG’s download session and file workflow
- Sign out of DTRPG and clear the site’s cookies, then sign back in and retry. DTRPG’s help article says download problems often come down to a bad cookie; this is a general troubleshooting suggestion, not a diagnosis of Edge tabs closing.
- If the problem continues, temporarily disable browser extensions and retry.
- If you selected multiple files to create a ZIP, try downloading files individually in case the bulk download is the part that fails.
DTRPG’s download article covers cookies, extensions, bulk downloads, and what details to provide support. Clear only the site data you intend to remove; clearing cookies may sign you out.
Check Edge’s download path, alerts, and policies
If downloads from multiple sites cause trouble, inspect Edge’s download settings at edge://settings/downloads. Confirm the destination folder exists, is writable, and has enough free space. Note any download error, blocked-item message, or interrupted progress rather than guessing from the disappearing tab or prompt.

- Check whether Microsoft Defender SmartScreen, antivirus software, or another security control displayed an alert. Review the notification or protection history; do not routinely turn off SmartScreen or antivirus, because doing so lowers protection.
- If this is a managed work or school device, inspect
edge://policyfor applicable policies or ask the administrator about download restrictions. - Consider whether a proxy, network restriction, or file-type rule could affect the download. Microsoft lists these among possible download-failure causes, but none is confirmed for this symptom.
- Try the same file in another browser. If it fails there too, the issue may be network-related rather than specific to Edge.

If Edge itself closes or becomes unstable
If the whole browser exits, restarts, or has problems beyond DTRPG downloads, follow Microsoft’s general Edge stability guidance rather than treating it only as a download issue. Microsoft recommends steps such as updating Edge, restarting, checking extensions, and repairing the browser where appropriate. Its Edge troubleshooting page provides those steps.
Use the DTRPG Library App or contact support
If browser downloads still fail, DTRPG documents the Library App as an alternate route. Its Downloading Your Library guide describes downloading eligible files, a title, or a specific file. The Library App FAQ explains how to locate failed downloads and retry a file. This offers another download workflow; it does not establish that the app fixes Edge’s tab behavior.
If contacting DTRPG, provide the diagnostic details it requests, including the URL, date and time with time zone, operating system and version, browser and version, IP address, and screenshot if available. Include which item closed—the window, prompt, DTRPG tab, or unrelated tabs—and whether the behavior also occurs with other sites or in another Edge profile.
