1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChanging a PDF’s title, author, or other metadata can trigger a signature warning—but the warning does not, by itself, prove that someone tampered with the document. A digital signature protects a defined set of file bytes. If a save rewrites bytes covered by the signature, its integrity check can fail; if the edit is appended as a new PDF revision, the original signature may still verify for the earlier signed version. The validator’s report, the signature’s permissions, and certificate and timestamp checks determine what the warning means.
What a PDF signature verifies
A PDF signature is tied to a particular signed state of the file, not simply to what a reader sees on the page. The PDF specification describes a signature’s ByteRange as the bytes used to calculate its digest. During validation, the application recalculates the digest and compares it with the value stored in the signature. If a metadata edit rewrites any covered bytes, that comparison can fail. See the ISO 32000-1:2008 PDF specification text hosted by Adobe.

Metadata such as a document title or author is descriptive information, not a separate cryptographic trust test. But changing it still requires writing to the PDF. Whether that breaks integrity depends on how the software saves the file and whether the changed bytes fall within the signed range.

A save that rewrites signed bytes
Some applications save changes by rewriting portions of a PDF, potentially including bytes covered by the signature. If that happens, the digest no longer matches the signed data and integrity validation can fail. A changed metadata field may look minor, but the signature check is concerned with the protected bytes, not the apparent importance of the edit.

An appended revision
PDFs can also be updated incrementally: a later revision is appended while the original signed bytes remain intact. In that case, a signature can remain valid for the earlier revision even though the current file contains subsequent changes. A validator may report both that the signature matches its signed version and that the document changed afterward.
Certification permissions
A certification signature can specify which kinds of later changes are permitted. Whether an edit is allowed under those rules is a separate question from whether the original signature’s digest still matches. The PDF specification and Adobe’s guidance on certificate-based signatures describe signatures and permitted post-signing changes. A change that is technically preserved in a later revision may still be reported as disallowed by the certification policy.

Separate the four questions behind a warning
A signature status is easier to interpret when you distinguish the checks a validation tool may report:
- Integrity: Do the bytes covered by the signature still match its digest?
- Revision and permissions: Did the PDF change after signing, and does the certification signature permit the change?
- Trust: Does the application trust the signer’s certificate chain?
- Time and revocation evidence: Can it validate the timestamp and establish the certificate’s status at the relevant time?
Adobe’s signature validation guidance explains validation results, while its digital-signature verification guidance covers verification information. A timestamp warning, for example, may mean the timestamp server’s certificate is not trusted; expiration can also be reported separately. Those are not the same diagnosis as a changed signed byte range.

How to investigate a signed PDF safely
- Preserve the received file. Keep the original PDF unchanged and make a separate copy for examination. Do not treat a re-saved or printed copy as a substitute for the original signed evidence.
- Validate it in a signature-aware application. In Adobe Acrobat or Reader, open the Signatures panel and choose Validate Signatures. Review the detailed result rather than relying only on a status icon. Browser PDF viewers may not validate digital signatures; the U.S. Government Publishing Office recommends Acrobat or Reader for its signed publications. See GPO’s authenticated-PDF guidance.
- Identify the type of reported issue. Check whether the details point to integrity, a later revision, certification permissions, certificate trust, timestamp, or revocation information. A generic warning alone does not distinguish among them.
- Inspect the signed version and later revisions. Acrobat and Reader can track previously signed versions so you can examine changes over the document’s lifecycle. Compare the version that was signed with the current revision if the application offers that view.
- Check long-term validation information. Look for certificate-status data and trusted timestamp information. Adobe documents adding validation information at signing or later under specified conditions; doing so may require retrieving information online and saving the PDF. See Adobe’s verification guidance.
- For an official publication, check the issuer’s copy. Compare the file with the issuing agency’s version and follow its instructions. GPO says altered content invalidates its certification and asks users to contact it if a file downloaded directly from GovInfo does not validate.
GPO explains that its workaround for adding annotations creates a new PDF that no longer carries the digital signature. That is why an edited or printed copy should not replace the received signed file when you need to preserve the original evidence.
What the warning does—and does not—establish
A failed integrity check means the signed bytes do not match the signature’s digest. A warning about trust, time, or revocation data points to a different validation issue. A report of later changes may show that the current PDF differs from the signed revision without establishing that the original signature is invalid for that earlier state.

None of these technical results alone decides whether a document is admissible, valid, or enforceable. Those are legal questions that depend on jurisdiction and context. The cited technical guidance explains PDF signature behavior; it does not establish a general legal rule for every document or dispute.
What PDF/A does not guarantee
PDF/A-1 conformance is not a guarantee that a digital signature is valid. The PDF Association’s note on PDF/A-1 and digital signatures says that this conformance level neither defines signature semantics nor requires PDF readers to validate signatures. Treat archival-format conformance and signature validation as separate checks.

How to choose a validator
When selecting a tool or comparing results, check whether it:
- Verifies both the signature digest and the signer’s certificate chain.
- Shows signed versions and later revisions.
- Reports timestamp and certificate-revocation status.
- Identifies certification permissions and changes made after signing.
- Uses an appropriately configured trust store and validation time.
Two applications can present different warnings if their trust stores or validation settings differ. For implementation-sensitive guidance, note that the cited PDF specification is ISO 32000-1:2008 text hosted by Adobe; consult the currently applicable specification where a particular implementation detail matters.
