Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFirst identify what “incorrectly” means: missing boxes or blanks usually point to font coverage, a legible but unexpected character style may reflect language or regional font selection, and genuinely garbled text calls for checking the text data and its decoding. For missing glyphs, restore an ordered, tested fallback stack and declare the content’s language accurately; changing fonts alone will not repair corrupted characters.
Start by identifying the symptom
Different visual problems call for different fixes. The Unicode Consortium distinguishes lack of font support from incorrect or garbled characters in its display-problem guidance.

- Boxes, question-mark boxes, or blanks: the selected fonts may not contain one or more required glyphs. Unicode notes that missing support can appear as tofu-style boxes, code-point boxes, or blank spaces.
- Legible characters in an unexpected style: the browser may be using a different available font, or the glyph forms may not suit the intended Chinese language variety.
- Garbled or nonsensical characters: investigate the string and how it is decoded. A font change cannot correct characters that are already wrong in the text data.
Restore a fallback stack for the intended Chinese text
CSS tries the families in font-family in order. A browser may select fonts character by character, so some characters can come from a fallback even when others use the first family. MDN recommends including a generic family because a named font is not guaranteed to be installed. See MDN’s font-family reference.
For Simplified Chinese, this is an illustrative starting point, not a guarantee that every font is present on every device:

- ENGRAVING: 78 key keyboard and mouse use engraving keycaps, and comfortable, with clear characters and simple .
- MUTE: responsive, and to knocking, the keys are silent and silent, and use will not affect relatives and roomy.
- 78 KEYS: For 78 keys, a layer of transparent gloss is applied on the font to increase wear and can be used for a long time.
<html lang="zh-Hans">
.chinese-content {
font-family: "Noto Sans CJK SC", "Microsoft YaHei", "PingFang SC", sans-serif;
}
Choose fonts for the script and language variety the content actually uses. For Traditional Chinese, identify the intended locale—for example, zh-Hant, with a more specific region where appropriate—and test suitable available fonts. Do not assume one CJK font renders every language community’s preferred glyph forms identically.
Check which font the browser is actually using
- Open the browser’s developer tools and inspect the affected element’s computed
font-family. Review inherited styles and later rules that may override the stack. - Look for leftover
@font-facerules, stale font references, or broad CSS resets that changed the intended fallback after the web font was removed. - Use the developer tools’ rendered-font information, where available, to identify the font supplying the affected characters. Confirm that it has the needed glyphs.
- Retest the exact characters that previously failed, not just a short sample of common text. A font can cover some characters without covering all the page’s text.
Chromium’s Blink text-stack documentation describes the browser trying CSS-listed web fonts and then system fallback to fill glyph gaps. If no usable glyph is found, a missing-glyph box can remain; operating-system fonts and fallback behavior differ, so a successful result on one machine does not establish coverage everywhere.

Set the language where the Chinese appears
Use a lang value that reflects the content, not an assumed visitor location. Set it on the document when the page has one language, or on the relevant section or span when languages are mixed. For example:
<p lang="zh-Hant">繁體中文內容</p>
Chinese and Japanese share many Han characters but have different typographic traditions. W3C International guidance explains that language information can guide font selection in some browsers; for more precise control, authors can combine language-specific markup with CSS. See W3C International’s Unicode migration guidance. Because browser behavior and font availability vary, verify the result in the environments you support.

If you keep a web font, verify its loading and coverage
A web font can provide more consistent design than relying on whichever fonts happen to be installed, but it needs to contain the page’s characters and load successfully. Check that the @font-face family name matches the name used in font-family, and that the font resource loads. If using a subset, confirm it covers the actual text.
Fallback appearing briefly while a web font loads is different from a permanently missing glyph. The font-display setting controls what text looks like during font loading and what happens if loading is delayed or fails; consult MDN’s font-display reference. For a site that needs a consistent appearance, use a properly licensed font with sufficient coverage or a correctly configured subset.

When changing fonts is not the fix
If the displayed characters are genuinely garbled or do not match the intended text, inspect the underlying string and confirm the document or data is decoded according to its actual encoding. The available evidence does not establish that encoding is the cause on any particular page; treat it as a separate diagnostic branch, rather than assuming a font fallback problem.
Choose a repair by what matters on your site
Compare candidate fixes on the dimensions that affect your page:
- Coverage: does the font contain the characters used in the affected content?
- Regional fit: are its glyph forms suitable for the intended language variety?
- Availability: will it be downloaded as a web font, or must it already be installed on the visitor’s platform?
- Visual consistency: does falling back change the text’s appearance or layout noticeably?
- Delivery behavior: does the font load reliably, and what appears while it is loading?
These criteria help compare approaches; the cited documentation does not establish a benchmark ranking of particular font families.
