Why Mario Alonso Built a Platform Instead of a Consumer Brand

MN8’s platform model centers on proprietary materials licensed to established manufacturers, rather than building a consumer brand and retail operation.

Mario Alonso’s stated reason for building MN8 Innovative Solutions as a materials platform rather than a consumer brand is to focus on developing proprietary materials and license them to manufacturers that already know how to make and sell products. The strategy, as described in an Entrepreneur contributor article, is to make adoption easier by fitting new materials into familiar products and existing production operations—not to take on branding, manufacturing, distribution, and retail itself.

What MN8’s platform approach means

Entrepreneur describes MN8 as a Miami-based company founded by Alonso to develop proprietary materials for products established manufacturers already make. Instead of building a consumer-facing product line, MN8 licenses its underlying technology to companies with production capabilities, distribution, and customer relationships.

Alonso put the distinction this way in the article: “We are not trying to be the brand on the shelf. We are trying to be the reason the product on the shelf works differently.” Entrepreneur also quotes him saying, “We are building a materials platform that manufacturers across multiple industries can plug into.”

The source is a Contributor Content article by Will Jones, dated October 2, 2026. Entrepreneur says the opinions are the contributor’s own and that Entrepreneur Media was not involved in creating the content. Its account explains the strategy, but does not independently establish that MN8’s model has delivered commercial success.

Why work through existing products and manufacturers?

A new material has to clear more than a scientific-performance hurdle before a manufacturer adopts it. The Entrepreneur article says manufacturers also consider cost, consistency, quality, regulatory requirements, and how much operational disruption adoption would cause. A material that requires redesigning a product, changing supply chains, or teaching consumers a new routine may introduce extra obstacles.

MN8’s proposed approach is to add its material to products people already understand: a shirt remains a shirt, and a mattress remains part of an existing sleep routine. That is the article’s adoption rationale, not a measured finding that manufacturers or customers are more likely to accept the products.

What a licensing model trades

Licensing lets MN8 concentrate on materials technology while partners take responsibility for making products and reaching customers. The trade-off is a different allocation of control and work—not proof that one business model is universally better.

Consideration MN8’s described licensing approach Consumer-brand approach
Product and brand control MN8 focuses on the underlying material; partner manufacturers incorporate it into their products. The company would generally need to manage its own consumer-facing product and brand.
Manufacturing, distribution, and retail Existing partners supply production capability, distribution, and customer relationships. The brand would need to build or manage those functions itself or secure outside providers.
Access to established channels Partners may offer access to existing production and sales channels. A new brand must establish routes to customers.
Operational demands MN8 avoids taking on the full consumer-product chain, while manufacturers still assess integration, quality, cost, and other adoption requirements. The brand assumes broader responsibility for bringing products to market.
Dependence on adoption Growth depends on manufacturers deciding to license and use the technology. Growth depends more directly on the brand’s ability to make and sell products to consumers.

Alonso summarized the intended change in growth mechanics by saying, “The licensing model changes what growth looks like entirely.” The partner model can give manufacturers access to specialized materials without building their own materials teams or developing the intellectual property themselves, according to the Entrepreneur article. It also means MN8’s reach depends on partner decisions and execution.

Where MN8 says its materials may be used

Entrepreneur names apparel, bedding, insoles, and recovery products as application areas. MN8’s textile page lists apparel, athleisure, sleepwear, bedding, and footwear. These categories do not confirm a particular licensee, a specific retail product using MN8 technology, or commercial availability.

MN8 says on that page that its products have undergone peer-reviewed, clinical, and pre-clinical testing in randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled environments. The page does not identify the specific studies in the inspected content, so this is the company’s description rather than independently verified evidence of efficacy.

How to interpret MN8’s technology and patent claims

MN8’s FIR and bioceramics page reports 5 patent families, 40+ patent applications, and 30+ countries. Those figures are published by MN8; the page does not provide a reference date or define the geographic measure in the inspected content. They were not independently checked.

MN8’s homepage describes its far-infrared technology as intended for consumer-product human-wellness applications and makes claims concerning circulation, inflammation, and muscle recovery. Those are company claims, not established medical effects on the basis of the homepage. The testing description and health claims should not be read as proof that a particular product provides a health benefit.

What the available account does—and does not—establish

  • What it explains: Entrepreneur presents Alonso’s strategy as a decision to concentrate on proprietary materials and licensing rather than consumer branding and the wider retail operation.
  • What motivates it: The article’s rationale is that integrating materials into familiar products and existing manufacturing operations may reduce adoption friction.
  • What remains unestablished: The cited pages do not identify a specific MN8 licensee or retail item using its technology, and they do not provide independently documented commercial outcomes.

Alonso’s interest in far-infrared bioceramics is also reported by the Entrepreneur article as having followed his study of the relationship between materials and human health after a serious illness. That is the article’s account of his personal history; it does not independently verify the account or the biomedical claims associated with the materials.
