Long-running AI agents are hard to build because they must keep useful state, choose actions in changing conditions, and recover safely when something goes wrong—often across many tool calls or sessions. A mistake can compound, memory can become stale or contaminated, and an external action may be difficult to reverse. The runtime that manages state, permissions, validation, traces, and recovery is therefore part of the agent, not just plumbing around the model.
Why long-haul agents are a systems problem
A single-turn model mainly needs to produce a useful response from the context it receives. A persistent agent must also keep working as that context grows and the world changes. It accumulates decisions, observations, tool outputs, and partial results, then uses them to choose what to do next. If the account it relies on is incomplete or outdated, the agent can take a reasonable-looking action for the wrong situation.

Long runs also multiply opportunities for failure. A tool may return an error that the agent misreads; a repeated call may duplicate an external action; or an interface may change while the agent continues using an old protocol. The United Nations University’s report on agent harnesses cautions that evaluating a model alone is insufficient for assessing a deployed agent: tools, memory, permissions, orchestration, and recovery all affect system behavior.

What production practice says about current limits
A 2026 study, Measuring Agents in Production, combines 20 case studies with a survey of 86 deployed-systems practitioners across 26 domains. In that study, 68% reported agents executing at most 10 steps before human intervention, 70% said their systems relied primarily on prompting off-the-shelf models rather than weight tuning, and 74% depended primarily on human evaluation. These are findings from that study’s respondents, not universal rates or causal results.
The figures suggest a practical distinction: systems described as agents may still operate with short bounded runs, substantial human involvement, and evaluation that is not fully automated. Building a genuinely long-running system means engineering beyond the model call: the runtime must keep task state coherent, limit unsafe actions, notice when conditions change, and make it possible for a person to inspect or take over.
State continuity is not the same as a long prompt
The model’s current prompt is a view of task state, not necessarily the authoritative record. A long task may have more information than fits usefully in that view, and earlier details may no longer be true. Treating the entire conversation as canonical state encourages the agent to infer what happened from a partial or compressed transcript.
A safer design keeps durable task state outside the transient prompt. The runtime can then provide a bounded, relevant view for each decision, while retaining a versioned record of the task’s goals, progress, and results. The agent may propose a change, but the runtime should validate it before committing it. For consequential external changes, that can include approval, rollback, or a compensating action when a true undo is unavailable. The Cambridge working paper describes these as runtime concerns, rather than assuming the model’s next response is itself a safe state transition.

Memory must preserve useful experience, not just chat
Long-term agent memory is broader than dialogue history. The 2026 paper AMA-Bench treats memory in terms of ongoing agent-environment trajectories: states, actions, observations, and tool outputs. The engineering problem is deciding which parts of those trajectories to retain and retrieve for a later decision, then evaluating whether that selection actually helps.
Appending more history or increasing the context window does not, by itself, establish continuity. A runtime needs to distinguish current facts from old observations, preserve provenance where useful, and avoid allowing untrusted content to silently become an instruction or durable memory. Memory writes deserve validation too: poisoned or mistaken information can shape many later actions after the original context is gone.
Tool calls turn reasoning errors into real-world changes
Each call crosses an interface and creates a new observation; some calls also change files, accounts, services, or other external state. A long sequence makes small mistakes consequential: a stale observation can prompt the wrong next call, and a retry after interruption can repeat an action that already succeeded.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Practical controls belong at the runtime boundary:
- Validate tool inputs and outputs. Check that a proposed action fits the current task state and that a tool response is interpreted before the next step.
- Make retries safe where possible. Use idempotent operations or check whether an action already completed before repeating it.
- Bound execution. Set iteration limits, explicit stop conditions, and clear human handoff points.
- Gate consequential effects. Require approval where an action has material impact or cannot be readily reversed.
- Keep permissions narrow. Give each task only the access it needs rather than broad shell, file, or API privileges.
These controls address different failure modes; a step limit, for example, limits exposure but does not make an individual action correct.

Recovery means resuming the task, not merely restarting
Restarting a process is not recovery if the system cannot tell what the agent was doing, which actions completed, or what context it needs for its next decision. A recoverable runtime preserves durable task state and enough of the relevant trajectory to reconstruct a useful next context. It must also distinguish completed work from proposed or uncertain work, especially when an interruption occurs during an external action.
Checkpointing helps only when checkpoints capture the right state and recovery logic handles effects that may have succeeded before a crash. The Akka documentation on autonomous agents describes persistence of agent and task state across crashes and restarts; that is a vendor capability description, not an independent comparative benchmark. The underlying design question applies regardless of implementation: what is saved, how is it validated on resume, and what must be checked before the agent acts again?

Persistent agents operate amid content that may be untrusted, while their goals and authorization can change. A web page or tool result can contain prompt injection that the model treats as an instruction; broad permissions increase the damage such an error could cause. Likewise, a once-valid goal can become stale if an operator changes direction or withdraws approval.

Choose a workflow or an agent loop based on the task
A fixed workflow is often a better fit when the steps and their order are known in advance. A durable agent loop is more useful when the model needs to decide what to consult, whom to ask, or whether another iteration is needed. Akka documents this distinction in its workflow and autonomous-agent guidance; it is product guidance, not a universal benchmark proving one pattern is better.
| Design question | Fixed workflow | Durable agent loop |
|---|---|---|
| Who chooses the next step? | The program follows a defined order. | The model selects whether and how to continue. |
| Where does state live? | Workflow state and results are managed by the application. | The runtime must preserve task state and the context needed for later decisions. |
| What needs recovery? | Known steps and their progress must be resumed safely. | Progress, relevant trajectory, and the agent’s next decision context must be reconstructed. |
| How are external effects controlled? | Validate effects at the relevant workflow steps. | Validate each model-selected action and apply permissions, approvals, and safe retry behavior. |
| How is the run kept governable? | Inspect the defined sequence and its outcomes. | Bound iterations, define stop conditions, and retain an inspectable action trace. |
The choice turns on task structure, not on whether an agent loop sounds more advanced. If the sequence is predictable, explicit workflow logic can make behavior easier to constrain and audit. If the next step genuinely depends on changing observations, iteration may be necessary—but it needs stronger state, recovery, and operational controls.
Make the whole runtime observable and evaluable
Useful traces let an operator reconstruct tool calls, state changes, decisions, and handoffs. Without them, it is difficult to diagnose whether a failure came from stale state, an invalid transition, a repeated action, or an unsuitable tool response. Logs should support investigation without treating a compressed summary as a substitute for the underlying state record.
