A DIY windshield repair kit is meant for limited damage—not every crack. Rain-X’s kit lists round damage up to about 1 inch and cracks up to 12 inches; Permatex’s kit is specified for bullseye damage up to 1 1/4 inches. Those are each maker’s limits, not universal safety thresholds or proof that a repair will look flawless. If damage is in the driver’s view, reaches an edge, branches, affects a camera’s view, or extends through multiple glass layers, seek a professional assessment instead of relying on a consumer kit.
Which kit matches the damage?
Choose by the damage pattern the manufacturer names, then check the product instructions and application conditions. The published descriptions do not establish that either kit works better in practice; they are not head-to-head test results.

| Kit | Manufacturer-stated damage scope | Included components | Application and curing guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rain-X Windshield Repair Kit, item 600001 | Round damage up to about 1 inch and cracks up to 12 inches. Rain-X says it will not repair damage to more than one layer of glass. Rain-X product page | 1 gram of resin, repair device, curing strips, sleeved razor blade, and instructions. Rain-X product page | Rain-X support says strong direct sunlight is required for curing and gives about 40°F as an application guideline. Rain-X support |
| Permatex Windshield Repair Kit, item 9103 | Bullseye damage up to 1 1/4 inches on most laminated windshield glass. Permatex product page | Syringe and plunger, 0.75 ml repair compound, adhesive disc, pedestal, curing strip, push pin, razor blade, alcohol towelette, and instructions. Permatex product page | Work in shade with the windshield at 50–75°F. Permatex product page |
The Rain-X support guidance does not specify a minimum application temperature; its roughly 40°F figure is a guideline, not a guaranteed cutoff. Its direct-sun curing requirement differs from Permatex’s direction to work in shade. Follow the instructions for the specific kit rather than combining the two products’ procedures.

- For Best Results - Repairs Should Be Made As Soon As Possible After The Damage Occurs And Before The Break Has Had A Chance To Be Contaminated By Dirt Or Water
- Pro-Tip To Avoid Poor Results - Refrain From Applying Resin Too Quickly, Air Pockets Forming During The Repair Or Repairing On A Contaminated Crack As This May Compromise Your Results. Use A Gentle Touch — Too Much Pressure Can Extend The Crack Rather Than Repair It.
- Damage through multiple layers: Rain-X says its kit does not repair damage affecting more than one glass layer.
- Obstructed driver visibility or camera view: Safelite says damage blocking the driver’s field of vision or in the forward-facing camera’s line of sight may require windshield replacement. These are Safelite’s service criteria, not universal rules. Safelite repair guidance
- Branching, edge-reaching, or otherwise unusual damage: The listed kit descriptions do not establish that these patterns are appropriate for DIY repair. Seek a professional assessment when damage falls outside the kit instructions.
- Uncertain damage type: Rain-X’s scope covers its named round damage and cracks, while Permatex specifies bullseye damage. If you cannot confidently match the break to the manufacturer’s description, get it assessed.
Safelite says it may repair damage smaller than six inches and also lists conditions where replacement may be needed. That is guidance about its own service, not a DIY threshold or a universal standard. Safelite repair guidance
What to know before applying resin
Work promptly and follow the kit’s conditions
Rain-X advises repairing damage promptly, before dirt or water contaminates the break. This is manufacturer guidance, not a measured success-rate claim. Check the specific instructions for temperature, shade or sunlight, and the order of application. Permatex warns against getting resin on painted surfaces.
Expect a possible blemish
A repair may improve or stabilize damage without making it disappear. Permatex cautions that “The repair may not completely remove blemish or permanently fill the pit.” Rain-X likewise says results depend on the damage type and proper application. Neither statement promises a flawless cosmetic result.

Do not assume a second application will help
Rain-X generally advises against applying its kit more than once to the same damage site after the resin has cured. Its support guidance says reopening or reinjecting the break may be ineffective and could add stress or cracking risk. Rain-X support

- Identify the damage pattern and location. Note whether it is round, bullseye-shaped, a crack, branching, or near an edge; check whether it affects the driver’s view or camera area.
- Compare it with the exact kit’s stated scope. Rain-X lists round damage up to about 1 inch and cracks up to 12 inches; Permatex lists bullseye damage up to 1 1/4 inches. These limits apply to the named products, not all windshield damage.
- Confirm you can meet the application conditions. Rain-X calls for strong direct sunlight to cure; Permatex says to work in shade at 50–75°F. If those requirements cannot be met, wait for suitable conditions or choose professional assessment.
- Follow the product instructions and reassess the result. Do not repeat a cured Rain-X repair on the same site as a routine second attempt. If the damage is outside the directions or visibility remains affected, contact a glass professional.
What the available product information cannot tell you
The manufacturers’ descriptions identify scope, components, and cautions, but they do not provide an independent comparative test or a measured success rate. They also do not establish current retail pricing or availability. A product’s stated size limit should therefore be read as the manufacturer’s claim for that kit, not evidence that a repair will succeed in a particular windshield.
