If it disappears after an event, it may have ended normally under Apple’s time limits. The right fix depends on which of those symptoms you’re seeing.
First, identify what is happening
| Symptom | What to check | Who controls the likely cause |
|---|---|---|
| The Live Activity never appears | Check the app-specific Live Activities setting, then confirm the event is active in the app. | You control the setting; the app determines when an activity starts. |
| It appears but stops updating | Compare its information with what the app currently shows. | Updates can depend on connectivity and the app’s ActivityKit or server delivery. |
| It disappears after the event | Consider whether the app or you ended it, or whether it reached its active-duration limit. | The app, you, and iOS lifecycle rules can affect its duration. |
| Only one app is affected | Check that app’s setting and support options. | The problem may be specific to the app or its update service; the symptom alone does not prove the cause. |
If the Live Activity never appears
Enable it for the affected app
On iPhone, open Settings > Apps > [app] > Live Activities and turn on Live Activities if the option is available. Apple documents this per-app control, and users can deactivate Live Activities for individual apps. The exact wording or location can vary by iOS version. See Apple’s iPhone guide to viewing Live Activities and its Live Activities documentation.

Confirm that the app has an active event
Reopen the app and check whether the relevant event, order, timer, or other activity is still active there. Some apps require you to start or follow an event in the app before a Live Activity appears; the exact start process is app-specific. An event that has already ended may not be recoverable as an active Live Activity.
If it appears but stops updating
Compare the activity with the app
Open the app and see whether it has newer information than the Lock Screen or Dynamic Island. If both are out of date, the app may not be receiving current information. If the app is current but the Live Activity is not, the problem may lie in how the app updates its ActivityKit activity or delivers updates—not in a user-facing iPhone setting.

Understand what “stale” means
ActivityKit lets an app set a stale date. When fresh updates do not arrive by that point, the activity can be marked stale to indicate that its displayed information may no longer be current. That status does not by itself mean the Lock Screen has malfunctioned. Apple describes stale dates in its Live Activities guidance and ActivityKit push-notification documentation.
Know what users can—and cannot—fix
Live Activities can receive updates from within an app or through ActivityKit push notifications. Push updates require the app’s service to send correctly formed data. Apple also imposes a per-hour budget on ActivityKit push notifications and says the system may throttle pushes if an app exceeds it. These are app-side delivery mechanics: you cannot repair a server’s payload or push schedule in Settings. Connectivity can also affect whether fresh information reaches the activity, but the symptom alone cannot identify which explanation applies.

When disappearance is normal
Apple says a Live Activity can be active for up to eight hours unless the app or a person ends it sooner. Once the active period ends, iOS removes it from the Dynamic Island. On the Lock Screen, an ended activity may remain for up to four additional hours under the documented default behavior, unless you remove it earlier or the app configures a different dismissal time. The maximum documented Lock Screen presence is therefore 12 hours; it is not a promise that every activity will remain visible that long. Details are in Apple’s Live Activities lifecycle documentation.
Troubleshoot in this order
- Check the app’s setting: Go to Settings > Apps > [affected app] > Live Activities and enable it if it is off.
- Check the event in the app: Reopen the app and confirm the relevant activity is still in progress.
- Try Apple’s basic app checks: Force-close and reopen the app. If needed, restart the iPhone, check for an app update in the App Store, and check for an iOS update in Settings. Apple recommends these general steps for apps that do not work as expected; see Apple’s app troubleshooting guidance.
- Compare the displayed information: If the app itself has current information but its Live Activity does not, contact the app developer. If the app is also out of date, report that instead of assuming the Lock Screen is the cause.
When to contact the app developer
Contact the developer if the issue keeps affecting one app after you have checked its Live Activities setting and tried the basic app checks. Include the app name and version, your iOS version, the type of activity, when it stopped updating or disappeared, and whether the app itself still showed current information. Those details help distinguish a display symptom from a possible app or delivery problem; they do not diagnose the cause on their own.
