Replacing a battery’s liquid electrolyte with a solid one does not automatically stop lithium dendrites. In a 2025 study of lithium/LLZO garnet/lithium cells, researchers observed two routes for lithium to penetrate the solid electrolyte: uneven lithium plating at an interface and local reduction of lithium ions at grain boundaries. The finding helps explain why solid-state batteries can still face durability problems—and why the mechanisms and fixes must be judged for each electrolyte chemistry and cell design.
How do lithium dendrites form in solid-state batteries?
A dendrite is a lithium growth that extends into or through the electrolyte. In a solid-state cell, the solid electrolyte can resist that growth, but resistance is not the same as immunity. Interfaces, internal microstructure, defects and operating conditions can create local paths or conditions that favor lithium accumulation and penetration.

The clearest direct evidence in the studies covered here comes from LLZO, a garnet-type solid electrolyte. Liu and colleagues’ 2025 Nature Materials study examined Li/LLZO/Li cells using tracer-exchange solid-state NMR and in-situ MRI. It identified two distinct routes rather than a single universal mechanism.

Lithium can deposit nonuniformly where the electrode meets the solid electrolyte. Localized plating can produce rapid dendrite growth, especially where interface conditions are uneven. In the reported LLZO cells, MRI associated the initial rapid growth with this nonuniform plating.

Local reduction at grain boundaries
Grain boundaries are the interfaces between differently oriented crystalline regions in a polycrystalline electrolyte. The same study reported local reduction of Li+ at LLZO grain boundaries, followed by slower bulk dendrite nucleation. Its observed sequence included fast growth associated with uneven plating, a period when growth stalled, and later, slower nucleation attributed to lithium-ion reduction. A pause in visible growth therefore did not mean that no other penetration route could become relevant.
Why more than one mechanism matters
The authors also discuss amorphous dendrite formation followed by crystallization, electrolyte defect chemistry and operating conditions as part of the interplay. A 2024 review by Yang and colleagues surveys other interacting explanations and influences, including cracks, electronic conduction, interfacial behavior, mechanical stress and space-charge effects. These are proposed or investigated mechanisms across the literature; they should not be treated as a single established account for every solid-state chemistry.
Why do solid-state batteries still have durability problems?
Durability depends on whether a cell can keep operating without damaging growth, not simply on whether its electrolyte is solid. If lithium penetrates an electrolyte far enough to connect regions that should remain separated, it can cause an internal short circuit. A short can compromise the cell and end its useful operation. A 2025 LLZO study explicitly describes dendrite penetration and internal shorting as a durability risk.

The route to penetration matters because it depends on different parts of a cell. An uneven electrode–electrolyte interface, a crack or void, grain-boundary chemistry, electron transport through the electrolyte, and mechanical stress are not interchangeable problems. A design change that improves one may leave another unchanged—or introduce a trade-off.
A September 2026 review by Weckelmann and colleagues in eScience highlights low lithium self-diffusion coupled with interfacial inhomogeneities as an important driver in solid electrolytes. This broad review framing complements the LLZO experiments; it does not establish that the same detailed pathways operate in every solid electrolyte or cell construction.
What does LLZO grain-boundary structure change?
Grain boundaries can have different structures and local properties, so their role is not merely that of a generic seam between crystals. You and colleagues’ 2025 Nature Communications study found that crack-like voids at LLZO grain boundaries can facilitate lithium protrusions. Their analysis and simulations associated those voids with the protrusions, underscoring how microstructural defects may provide favorable sites or paths for lithium growth.

In the reported work, selectively amorphizing grain boundaries suppressed lithium aggregation and protrusions. The study also reported improved interfacial electronic and mechanical properties, alongside a slight reduction in ionic conductivity. This is a material-specific microstructural result, not evidence that amorphization prevents dendrites in all solid-state batteries or establishes longer commercial cycle life.

Which dendrite-mitigation approaches target which pathway?
Researchers have proposed or investigated interventions at several levels. Yang and colleagues’ 2024 review groups approaches including electrolyte composition and design, electronically insulating interface buffer layers, surface modification, current-collector modification and added physical fields. The table distinguishes their intended targets; it does not rank them as proven commercial solutions.
| Approach | Pathway or feature it aims to address | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Electrolyte composition or design | Material properties and defect-related conditions that can affect lithium transport or penetration. | Surveyed as a research strategy in Yang and colleagues’ 2024 review; outcomes depend on chemistry and design. |
| Electronically insulating interface buffer layers | Electron transport and interfacial reactions that may contribute to lithium-ion reduction. | Discussed in the 2024 review as an investigated approach, not a settled general fix. |
| Surface or current-collector modification | Interface conditions and lithium-plating uniformity. | Discussed in the 2024 review; effectiveness depends on cell construction and operating conditions. |
| Added physical fields | Conditions intended to influence lithium deposition or transport. | Included among approaches surveyed in the 2024 review; broad review coverage does not establish a universal benefit. |
| Selective grain-boundary amorphization in LLZO | Crack-like boundary voids, lithium aggregation and protrusion formation. | You and colleagues’ 2025 LLZO study reported fewer protrusions and improved interfacial electronic and mechanical properties, with a slight ionic-conductivity trade-off. |
When comparing any proposed fix, ask which failure pathway it targets, which electrolyte chemistry and microstructure were tested, what happened to ionic conductivity and interface properties, and what kind of evidence supports the result. Direct cell observations, microscopy or imaging, simulations and review synthesis answer different questions and should not be presented as equivalent proof of practical durability.

What can these findings tell us about battery life?
They show why solid electrolytes do not guarantee dendrite-free operation and why durability work must consider interfaces and internal structure as well as the electrolyte’s bulk material. The 2025 MRI and NMR findings offer direct evidence of multiple growth routes in Li/LLZO/Li cells, while the grain-boundary study identifies a specific LLZO microstructural feature and a targeted intervention. Reviews widen the set of mechanisms and strategies considered, but they do not make one laboratory result transferable to every solid-state battery.
These studies do not establish a commercial cycle-life figure or show that any one mitigation strategy solves the problem across chemistries. Their practical implication is narrower and useful: evaluating a solid-state design requires identifying how lithium could accumulate or penetrate in that particular cell, and checking whether a proposed intervention addresses that pathway without undermining other needed properties.
