Why Letting Claude Clean Up Your Android TV’s Bloatware Isn’t the Best Idea

A reported experiment used Claude Code and ADB to debloat an Android TV, but it is one anecdote with no benchmark or official support. Here is why built-in controls are the safer starting point.

Don’t let Claude, or any AI agent, strip system software from your TV on the strength of one reported experiment. The case that went public is a single anecdote: an AI engineer used Claude Code and Android Debug Bridge (ADB) to disable apps, install a launcher, and shorten animations on a four-year-old Android TV, and reported that it felt smoother afterward. No controlled before-and-after test was published, no manufacturer documents this workflow, and nothing in the report shows that the same steps are safe on another model or software version. The safer path is the built-in controls your TV already offers, and the rest of this article explains why.

What was actually reported

Tom’s Hardware reported on September 2, 2026 that Mert Cobanov, an AI engineer, had worked through an Android TV without root access. According to the report, he enabled developer options, let Claude Code connect to the TV over ADB, disabled a set of apps, installed FLauncher as a replacement home screen, and reduced animation durations. Cobanov described the result as a smoother device. He posted that account on X, and Tom’s Hardware quoted it:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

“This morning, I opened the developer options on my Android TV and told Claude to connect to the TV via ADB and debloat it.”

Read that as one person’s description of one television. It is not a test of Claude’s reliability, and it does not show that the agent chose safe packages. The report, as published, does not name the TV model or list the packages that were disabled.

Why the “Claude” part is easy to misread

The headline names Claude, but two different products are involved, and only one of them was used. Claude Code is the developer tool that ran the commands. The consumer Claude app for Android, documented in the Claude Help Center article on installing Claude for Android, is a separate product, and that article covers installing the app on Android devices. It does not describe any feature for managing television system packages.

Nothing in the available Anthropic or Google documentation establishes a supported Android TV debloating feature in Claude. If a Claude product ever offers one, it would be documented by its maker. Until then, an agent issuing ADB commands to a TV is an improvised workflow, not an official integration.

What the “smoother TV” claim does and does not show

Three limits apply to the performance story:

  • It is Cobanov’s own impression. No frame timing, boot time, memory reading, or side-by-side comparison was reported.
  • Shortening animation durations makes transitions feel quicker by design, so a subjective sense of speed is expected whether or not the underlying hardware is less loaded.
  • A TV that feels slow can be slow for reasons unrelated to bloatware, such as limited memory, a weak processor, or a stale firmware version.

None of this means the result is false. It means the report cannot tell you whether the same steps would help your television.

Why “reversible” is not the same as “safe”

The report also quotes Cobanov on reversibility: “Nothing is uninstalled, so every step can be reversed. The agent keeps a list of what it disabled, so telling it ‘re-enable everything you disabled’ is enough.”

That claim describes his setup. It depends on the agent’s list being complete and accurate, on the TV staying connected to the same computer, and on the TV’s software not changing in ways that alter what was disabled. The report does not say how a user recovers if the list is lost, if the TV is factory-reset, or if a firmware update restores or re-enables packages. Those are the situations where bloatware-cleaning goes wrong, and the report does not address them.

Disabling a system component can also affect things you did not intend to touch, such as a service that handles input, updates, casting, or voice. A failure may not show up until days later, after you have forgotten which package was changed.

Built-in controls compared with an ADB workflow

Question Built-in TV interface controls Claude Code over ADB, as reported
Documented by the platform or manufacturer? Yes. Google documents app removal and Apps only mode in Google TV Help: How Google TV & Android TV work. No. Not documented by Google or Anthropic for TV use.
Device- and version-specific risk Labels and availability vary by device. Google’s help describes the general interface. Not stated for any specific model. The single report names no model or package list.
Reversibility and recovery Not stated in the Google help text reviewed. Reported by Cobanov as reversible through the agent’s own record. Recovery after a firmware update or reset is not stated.
Effect on recommendations versus installed apps Apps only mode can reduce some recommendation surfaces, but disables Search and Assistant. Not stated. The report describes disabled apps, not recommendation behavior.
Evidence for performance benefit Not stated in the help material. Google does not promise speed gains from these controls. Anecdotal only: one reported experience, no benchmark.

Start with the built-in options

Google TV

Google’s help documentation describes the controls available on Google TV. Use them before anything else:

  1. Open the Apps tab on the home screen and select the app you want to remove, then choose the uninstall option. Google documents uninstalling apps from this tab.
  2. To reduce recommendations, go to Settings > Accounts & Profiles and look for Apps only mode. Google notes that Search and Assistant are unavailable in this mode, and that some recommendations can still appear depending on Web & App Activity and individual apps.

Labels can differ between TV brands and software versions, so match the wording to what your screen shows.

What deleting the advertising ID does and does not do

Many people try to stop ads by deleting the Android TV advertising ID. Google’s help page is blunt about the limit: “You can’t turn off ads, but you can control the use of your advertising ID for personalized ads across installed apps.” In practice, deleting the ID stops ads that are personalized using that identifier. Apps may still show ads based on other factors. The Google Android TV Help article on ad settings sets out the details.

Leave Google Play Protect on

Play Protect scans installed apps for potentially harmful behavior. Depending on what it finds, it can warn you, disable an app, or remove it. Google’s Android TV help says it is on by default and recommends keeping it on, quoting: “For better security, we recommend that you keep Google Play Protect on.” Play Protect does not evaluate ADB commands, and it does not certify which system packages are safe to disable. Turning it off to make room for an experiment removes a safety net without replacing it. The relevant page is Google Android TV Help: Protect your TV from harmful apps with Google Play Protect.

If you still want to experiment

This article does not provide package names or commands, because no source reviewed establishes a safe list for any television. If you go ahead anyway, treat it as a project with a rollback plan:

  • Identify the exact TV model and software version first, and check the manufacturer’s documentation for that combination.
  • Change one thing at a time and write down each package or setting before you touch it.
  • Keep Play Protect on, and avoid disabling anything related to updates, input, networking, or casting.
  • Confirm you can restore the TV to factory settings before you start, and know how to do it on your model.
  • After any firmware update, check whether your changes are still in place and whether anything has been re-enabled.

If the real goal is a faster interface

The report also points to an external 4K streaming stick or streaming box as an alternative when a built-in TV interface feels sluggish. That route adds a second device, a second remote, and its own setup, but it leaves the television’s system software alone. It is a reasonable option for some households, though it is not required and the report did not test any particular product.
