This guide therefore does not rank five VPNs. No provider has been shown to make League Pass work through a blackout. Instead, it explains what the 2026 blackout rules cover, why location masking fails, and the legitimate ways to watch or listen to games that are blacked out on League Pass.
What the 2026 blackout rules cover
NBA League Pass blackout treatment depends on the country where your device is located. The NBA’s League Pass blackout guide, updated October 6, 2026, sets out the following:

The guide does not name a single list of blacked-out games for every region. Which specific games are blacked out depends on the schedule and on your ZIP code (see below), so check the current NBA schedule and your local broadcaster listings before a game.

The replay window depends on the type of blackout. These windows are stated for the US only:

Why blackouts exist
The NBA says blackouts exist because local and national content providers hold exclusive rights to show live games. League Pass is a streaming subscription, so it must respect the same rights holders as cable and broadcast channels. That is also why live audio stays available during live blackouts: the audio arrangement is treated differently from the video feed in the NBA’s guidance.
How League Pass decides whether you are blacked out
The NBA says it identifies the device’s location using its IP address or location services when enabled. Your ZIP code is used to determine which teams are covered by local broadcasters. In practice, the location signal is what determines whether a local game is blacked out for you. That is the exact signal a VPN or proxy changes, which is why the NBA treats masking the location as circumvention rather than as a privacy setting.
Why a VPN cannot reliably get past a blackout
What the NBA’s support guidance says
The NBA Help Center’s error 7027 article, updated September 13, 2026, states: “VPNs and proxies are not supported and may prevent content from loading properly.” It also identifies detection of a VPN, proxy, or other location-masking network configuration as a typical cause of error 7027. A VPN that appears to work for one game may therefore fail for another, because the detection is not something you control.

What the subscriber agreement says
The NBA subscriber agreement, accessed October 7, 2026, says users agree not to use the service where blackout restrictions apply or outside allowable territories. It also warns that circumventing, or attempting to circumvent, a blackout or other use restriction can lead to:
- immediate termination of your subscription;
- a $100 early termination charge; and
- possible legal action.
Readers should check the agreement page directly for the exact wording before quoting it.
Why general VPN claims do not change this
VPN providers describe streaming in general terms. Surfshark’s support article, updated June 19, 2026, notes that streaming services may block individual VPN IP addresses, which means a server that works today can stop working without notice. NordVPN’s streaming guidance says its service should not be used to bypass copyright regulations. Neither source establishes compatibility with NBA League Pass, and a provider’s server list does not change the NBA’s stated position.

If you see error 7027 while using a VPN
- Turn off the VPN and any proxy or location-masking app on the device.
- Fully close League Pass and reopen it.
- If you use location services, confirm that the device reports your actual location.
- If the error persists with no VPN or proxy active, use the NBA Help Center’s 7027 article and contact NBA support.
If the game loads after the masking tool is turned off, the masking tool was the cause. If the error continues without it, the cause is outside what this guide can diagnose, and NBA support is the right next step.
Legitimate ways to watch or listen
Local games in the US
The NBA guide points US fans to their regional cable provider or an in-market local access subscription for local team games. Check whether your provider carries your team before the season, because coverage can vary by market.
Nationally broadcast games
For national games, the NBA guide directs fans to the relevant national broadcaster or streaming platform. The guide names ESPN, ABC, NBC, Peacock, and Amazon Prime Video as examples. The network for any given game is set in the schedule, so check it for each game rather than assuming one service carries everything.

Live audio remains available during live game blackouts, according to the NBA. This is the only live League Pass option the NBA guide describes for a blacked-out game.

Use the US replay windows listed above. Replay availability for other countries is not stated in the guide summarized here.
Canada
Canadian viewers should check the NBA guide and schedule to identify the broadcaster carrying each nationally broadcast game, since those games are blacked out on League Pass in Canada.

Choosing a League Pass plan

The plan affects how many devices can stream at once. It does not remove blackouts, so a Premium subscription will not show a local or national game that is blacked out for your location.
If you want a VPN for other reasons
A VPN may still be useful for general privacy, such as on public Wi-Fi, and that use does not depend on League Pass. If you compare general-purpose VPNs, check these before paying:
- the provider’s privacy and security documentation;
- whether any performance claims come with a stated methodology from an independent test;
- the price and renewal terms at the time you buy; and
- whether the provider explicitly prohibits using its service to evade content rights.
None of these checks shows that a VPN will work with League Pass.
