Leaves change color in autumn because shorter days and longer nights prompt trees to stop replenishing chlorophyll, the green pigment used in photosynthesis. As the green fades, yellow and orange pigments already in the leaf become visible; some trees also make red and purple pigments. Species and weather determine which colors appear and when.
What changes inside a leaf?
In spring and summer, a leaf continually makes and breaks down chlorophyll. Because chlorophyll’s green is so strong, it masks other pigments. As nights lengthen, chlorophyll production slows and stops; the chlorophyll left in the leaf breaks down, revealing colors that were hidden beneath the green. Four pigment names help describe the palette: chlorophyll is green, xanthophylls are yellow, carotenoids are orange, and anthocyanins are red to purple. Carotenoid is a broad pigment group, so explanations may group its yellow and orange members somewhat differently. Yellow and orange pigments are present during the growing season; anthocyanins are often produced in autumn, from sugars retained in the leaf.

Why do some trees turn yellow while others turn red?
Each species has its own pigment mix, and the pigments do not produce the same display in every tree. The U.S. Forest Service gives examples: red maple may turn scarlet, sugar maple orange-red, and black maple yellow. Some elms show little color beyond brown as their leaves shrivel and fall. Timing differs by species, too.

What role does weather play?
Cold weather alone does not make leaves change color. Shortening daylight is an important seasonal cue, and leaves can begin changing before the first frost. Temperature, light, moisture, and other weather conditions affect the timing and vividness of the display.
Bright, sunny days followed by cool, crisp nights that remain above freezing can favor a stronger display, especially reds: light and sugars retained in the leaf support anthocyanin production. Yellow and gold are more consistent from year to year because their pigments are already present. Drought, a late spring, a warm spell in autumn, or a hard frost can shift timing or mute the colors; severe frost may make leaves wither and fall before they change fully. Local conditions vary, so the display differs from one autumn to another.

Why do leaves fall after changing color?
As autumn progresses, a separation layer forms where the leaf joins the twig, while veins progressively close. Sugars may become trapped in the leaf and contribute to anthocyanin production. Once the connecting tissues are sealed, the leaf detaches.

In temperate climates, broad leaves are vulnerable to winter freezing. Shedding them is part of a tree’s seasonal strategy for avoiding winter damage. Fallen leaves decompose, return nutrients, and help form humus on the forest floor.
