Editing a property list (plist) on disk does not necessarily change a job that launchd has already loaded. The file is configuration input; the loaded job has runtime state of its own. To apply an edit, inspect the loaded job and, when appropriate, reload it in the correct launchd domain.
In a 2026 DEV Community account, Lily described changing an application environment value from 30 to 45 seconds while the loaded job still showed 30. The author said a 31-line Bash reconciliation script compared the desired value with the loaded value, waited while work was active, then used launchctl bootout and launchctl bootstrap to make launchd read the plist again. This is the author’s reported implementation, not an independently reproduced test.

Why a saved plist edit may not change a running job
A plist describes a job, but saving the file is not the same as updating the job definition already held by launchd. Apple’s launchd plist manual explicitly cautions that the Disabled key does not tell you whether a job is currently loaded; it recommends querying runtime state with launchctl list or ServiceManagement instead. See Apple’s launchd.plist manual.

Its Terminal guide points to launchctl for loading and unloading jobs. Common third-party job locations include /Library/LaunchDaemons, /Library/LaunchAgents, and ~/Library/LaunchAgents; the correct commands and domain depend on which kind of job you have. See Apple’s launchd guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
First verify the value launchd is actually using
In Lily’s example, the plist’s environment value changed from 30 to 45, but the loaded job continued to report 30. The author’s proposed diagnostic was to compare the value parsed from the plist with the value shown by launchctl print. That distinction matters: the on-disk value represents desired configuration, while the loaded job’s value indicates what the running service manager currently has for the job.
Use the matching user or system domain when querying a job. The featured account concerns a per-user LaunchAgent under ~/Library/LaunchAgents, so its domain is the logged-in user’s GUI domain; a system daemon is not interchangeable with that example. Apple documents job inspection and management in its launchctl manual. Because the featured script parses command output, verify its assumptions against the macOS release and job domain you actually use; the account does not establish a cross-version test matrix.

Choose manual reload or automatic reconciliation
| Approach | When it fits | Interruption and timing | Complexity and failure visibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual inspection and reload | An occasional configuration change when an operator can inspect the live job and act deliberately. | Applies when the operator performs the reload; a reload may interrupt the service, so check whether that is acceptable. | Simpler, but the operator must use the right domain and notice command failures. |
| Periodic reconciliation | A setup where desired and loaded values need to be compared repeatedly and work-in-progress should delay a change. | Can defer a reload while the job is busy; when the new value takes effect depends on the reconciliation schedule and job state. | Requires parsing, logging, scheduling, and failure handling. The benefits and implementation details here are Lily’s account, not independent testing. |
What the reported 31-line script does
Lily describes Bash logic that compares the desired timeout read from the plist with the loaded value reported by launchctl print. When a PID indicates active work, it defers the reload. Once the job is stopped, the script runs launchctl bootout followed by launchctl bootstrap, which the author says causes launchd to ingest the modified plist.
This describes one author’s approach, not a universally safe script to copy unchanged. A PID check alone does not establish that every kind of work is complete, and the correct target and domain depend on the job. Before adapting the approach, check its triggers, permissions, logging and error handling, and test the parser on the macOS versions you support. Apple warns that stopping a job does not guarantee it stays stopped: if its launch criteria remain satisfied, it may restart. Review KeepAlive and other trigger configuration in the launchctl manual.

Do not confuse an application timeout with launchd timeout keys
The example’s AUTOLIKE_TIMEOUT_SEC is an application-level environment value. It is not automatically equivalent to the plist keys TimeOut or ExitTimeOut. Apple’s plist manual describes TimeOut as an idle timeout passed to a job, and ExitTimeOut as the wait before sending SIGKILL during stopping. Similar names do not make these settings interchangeable. See Apple’s launchd.plist manual.
Account for how launchd expects jobs to behave
Apple’s archived developer guidance says launchd-managed daemons should not daemonize themselves; doing so can make launchd treat the process as having died. This is useful background when diagnosing a job’s lifecycle, but it is not identified as the cause of Lily’s timeout incident. See Apple’s archived guide to creating launch daemons and agents.
