The modeling steps below are a practical workflow rather than an official Blender chain recipe; the exact result depends on your geometry, scene lighting and Blender version.
1. Choose and shape a chain link
Start with a torus-like link or a rounded-rectangle loop. Adjust its proportions and thickness until it reads clearly as a link at the scale you plan to render. For an interlocking appearance, alternate the orientation of successive links rather than placing every link in the same plane.

Keep the opening large enough that neighboring links remain visually distinct. This matters especially for a transparent material, where overlapping surfaces and refractions can make the chain harder to read.
2. Add spikes to the link
Create conical or tapered protrusions and distribute them around the link with consistent spacing. Join or otherwise associate the spikes with the link geometry before making copies, so each repeated link carries the same design. Position them with the neighboring links in mind: spikes that penetrate or crowd adjacent links can muddy the silhouette.

3. Lay out the chain
Manual duplication for a simple path
For a straight chain or a gentle bend, duplicate the spiked link, move it into place, and rotate successive copies to create the interlocking pattern. This is straightforward to adjust by hand, but changing the path later means repositioning the links.
Curve-driven placement for a revisable path
If you expect to revise a more complex path, consider a curve-driven or procedural placement workflow. Blender’s Geometry Nodes curve documentation covers curve nodes as a modeling tool, but it does not provide a chain-specific node setup. Treat the placement as a workflow to build and tune for your scene, not a prescribed node recipe.

4. Give the chain a glass-like material
Create a material using Principled BSDF and adjust transmission, IOR, roughness and base color while viewing the chain in its scene. Blender’s Principled BSDF documentation describes transmission as suitable for materials such as glass and liquids, where light reflects and refracts through the material.

The Blender 5.1 manual calls IOR 1.5 “a good approximation for glass.” Use that as a starting point, not a mandatory setting for a stylized chain. IOR affects specular reflection and transmission. Roughness controls the spread of microfacet reflections: lower roughness produces sharper reflections, while higher roughness diffuses them. Tune the settings against your lighting rather than relying on a universal recipe.

5. Choose the right kind of transparency

| Principled BSDF transmission | Models light passing into the material, with reflection and refraction. | Glass-like appearance where the chain should distort and reflect its surroundings. |
| Alpha | Controls surface transparency; the Blender manual describes Alpha 1.0 as fully opaque. | Making the surface more or less transparent without treating it as refractive glass. |
| Transparent BSDF | Passes light straight through without refraction. | Cutout-like transparency, not glass-like refraction. |
These options are not interchangeable. Blender’s Transparent BSDF documentation explains that this shader passes light through as if there were no geometry at the surface. For a glass effect, use transmission; choose Alpha or Transparent BSDF when straight-through surface transparency is the intended look.
6. Preview the material and tune the scene
Inspect the result in Material Preview or Rendered shading. Blender’s 3D Viewport shading documentation describes these as interactive ways to inspect material response to objects and lights.

Adjust the lighting and background alongside the material. A transparent chain can disappear against a similar background, while reflections and refractions need visible scene elements to make the glass effect legible. If the form looks cloudy or too visually busy, revisit roughness, transmission and the arrangement of lights rather than changing a single value in isolation.

7. Check the final silhouette
Inspect the chain from the final camera angle. Check that the spikes remain visible, the links read as interlocking, and transparent overlaps do not obscure the design. If the silhouette becomes crowded, reduce intersections or increase the spacing between links and protrusions.
