Laptop prices are under pressure because AI data-center expansion is adding to demand for memory and server capacity, tightening the supply balance for components used in PCs. That is one contributor, not the only cause—and it does not mean every laptop has already become more expensive by the same amount. Manufacturers may pass costs on, absorb them, change configurations, or use existing inventory.
How AI data centers can affect laptop costs
The effect is indirect. AI data centers need large numbers of servers, and server growth increases demand for memory and advanced production capacity. Suppliers can prioritize high-performance server products, leaving less capacity or tighter availability elsewhere. Laptop makers then face higher negotiated costs for conventional DRAM and NAND storage used in PCs.

This is not a claim that ordinary laptops use the same memory components as AI accelerators. High-bandwidth memory (HBM) used with accelerators is distinct from conventional laptop DRAM. The connection is supplier capacity, product mix, and competition for memory—not direct substitution of one chip for another.

These are component contract-price forecasts, not retail laptop price changes. TrendForce says suppliers continue prioritizing advanced-process capacity for high-performance server products, keeping the overall market undersupplied. TrendForce’s 4Q26 memory outlook

What the price forecasts do—and do not—mean
Analyst estimates describe different things, so they should not be combined into a single prediction for what a shopper will pay.
| Estimate | What it covers | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 10–15% | TrendForce’s forecast for conventional DRAM contract-price growth in 4Q26, quarter over quarter | Component cost forecast, not a retail laptop increase |
| 15–20% | TrendForce’s forecast for NAND Flash contract-price growth in 4Q26, quarter over quarter | Component cost forecast, not a retail laptop increase |
| More than 30%; nearly 40% with CPU increases | TrendForce’s conditional model for a mainstream notebook originally priced at US$900, assuming memory costs are passed through while preserving margins; the nearly 40% scenario adds CPU price increases | Illustrative scenario, not a measured or universal retail change |
| 17% | Gartner’s forecast for PC prices in 2026 versus 2025 | PC forecast, not a laptop-only observed price index |
| 130% | Gartner’s estimate for combined DRAM and SSD prices by end-2026 versus 2025 | Component estimate, not a PC price increase |
TrendForce’s March 10, 2026 model says DRAM and SSD could rise from roughly 15% of bill-of-materials cost for a mainstream notebook under normal conditions to more than 30% in its 1Q26 scenario. In that model, passing through memory costs while maintaining margins could require a retail increase above 30%; adding CPU increases brings the modeled rise close to 40%. The starting price is a US$900 example, and the result depends on the assumptions in the model. TrendForce’s notebook cost scenario

Gartner separately forecasts a 17% increase in PC prices in 2026 versus 2025 and estimates combined DRAM and SSD prices will rise 130% by end-2026 versus 2025. Gartner projects PC memory’s share of total bill-of-materials cost at 23%, up from 16% in 2025. Those are Gartner forecasts with a different scope and method from TrendForce’s single-notebook illustration; neither is proof that all laptops have already risen by those amounts. Why one laptop may rise in price while another does not
Component costs do not flow automatically or uniformly into retail prices. A manufacturer or retailer might absorb some of the increase to protect a price point, pass it on, rely on inventory bought earlier, or alter the product configuration. TrendForce reports that notebook inventories increasingly reflect higher component costs in 4Q26, while PC makers continue procuring amid expectations of tight DRAM supply in 2027.

Configuration changes can hide some cost pressure
TrendForce says PC brands are reducing SSD capacities in mainstream models to lower bill-of-materials costs, while inventory and channel stock are being used to support client SSD shipments. A laptop’s price may therefore tell only part of the story: compare storage and memory capacity as well as the sticker price. TrendForce also warns PC DRAM supply could decline in 2027 as more capacity shifts to server applications. TrendForce’s 4Q26 memory outlook
Memory is not the only source of pressure
CPU availability and pricing also matter. TrendForce’s March analysis reported that Intel raised prices by more than 15% on certain entry-level and older-generation notebook CPUs; this does not describe every Intel processor. TrendForce also links AI-related computing demand with prioritization of advanced process and packaging capacity for high-performance computing products. TrendForce’s notebook cost scenario

Other components can add to the bill. TrendForce’s January outlook cites increases in PCB, battery, and power-management IC costs alongside CPU and memory pressures. These forces can coincide, so the evidence supports AI-server demand as a contributor to laptop cost pressure—not as the sole explanation for every price change. TrendForce’s January notebook outlook
