He said books he wanted, particularly in LitRPG and progression fantasy, were available through the subscription but harder to find elsewhere. That is one reader’s experience, not proof that every Kindle Unlimited title is exclusive or missing from Kobo.
What Kindle Unlimited adds to a Kobo-centered setup
Jansen describes using Kobo for most of his reading, then returning to Kindle because the titles he wanted were available through Kindle Unlimited. The appeal is access to books in the subscription’s catalog; a Kindle e-reader is one way to read within Amazon’s ecosystem, but the subscription and the device are separate choices. His account does not establish that a particular Kindle model is required.

That distinction matters if you already own a Kobo. The question is not whether one e-reader is universally better. It is whether the books you specifically want are available through Kindle Unlimited, and whether that access is worth using Amazon’s reading ecosystem alongside Kobo.

| What you want to do | Kindle ecosystem | Kobo ecosystem |
|---|---|---|
| Read books through a subscription | Kindle Unlimited is the feature Jansen identifies as the reason he returned to Kindle. The sources here do not establish current pricing, catalog size, or how many titles are exclusive. | The cited Kobo documentation describes library borrowing and supported file formats, not an equivalent subscription catalog. |
| Borrow library ebooks | Libby can send library books to Kindle, but OverDrive says this option is available only for U.S. libraries. | Many newer Kobo models have built-in OverDrive support. Compatible loans can be browsed, borrowed, and read on the device; a Libby loan can also sync to Kobo when the same library card is used. |
| Read a particular library loan | Availability depends on the library and its Kindle-delivery support. | Not every Libby ebook will sync. Libby audiobooks and magazines are not supported on Kobo devices. |
| Load personal ebook files | Not established by the sources cited here. | Kobo lists EPUB, EPUB2, EPUB3 (with a caveat for Kobo Original and Kobo Wi Fi), PDF, FlePub, MOBI, CBZ, and CBR among its supported formats. Adobe DRM-protected EPUB or PDF files require Adobe Digital Editions for transfer. |
Library access is not a guaranteed catalog: Kobo’s Libby help says available titles, loan periods, holds, and checkout limits depend on each library and its licenses. Borrowing requires a valid library card and a participating library.

Which setup makes sense for your reading?
Keep Kobo as your main reader if library borrowing is central
If your library participates and your chosen ebooks are compatible, Kobo’s built-in OverDrive support can make borrowing direct. Check your library’s catalog and lending rules, since device support does not mean every title or format will work.
Use Kindle Unlimited when its included books are the draw
If the titles you want are included in Kindle Unlimited and are difficult to find through your other usual sources, the subscription may make the Kindle ecosystem worthwhile for you. Jansen’s example is especially relevant to readers looking for LitRPG and progression fantasy, but it should not be treated as a guarantee about availability for every book in those genres.

Combine the ecosystems if each serves a different purpose
You do not have to treat Kobo and Kindle as mutually exclusive. You might prefer Kobo for compatible library loans or supported personal files, while turning to Kindle’s ecosystem for books you want through Kindle Unlimited. Whether that combination is worth it depends on your own reading list, country, and library.

Check these details before choosing
- Find the books, not just the genre. Check whether the specific titles you want are included in Kindle Unlimited or available through Kobo.
- Confirm library delivery by country. Kindle delivery through Libby is limited to U.S. libraries; Kobo’s OverDrive availability depends on device compatibility and library participation.
- Check the file and DRM workflow. Kobo supports several common ebook formats, but Adobe DRM-protected EPUB and PDF transfers require Adobe Digital Editions.
- Do not assume catalog exclusivity or equal availability. Jansen reports that some books he wanted were available through Kindle Unlimited and not elsewhere; that does not establish a complete comparison of the two catalogs.
