JUICE uses repeated flybys of Earth and Venus to reshape its route to Jupiter and adjust its speed without relying on propellant for every major change. Each encounter is timed so a planet’s gravity turns the spacecraft’s velocity in a way that helps set up the next leg. The route takes longer than a hypothetical direct transfer, but it conserves fuel needed for Jupiter arrival and the mission’s science tour.
What the flybys do
A gravity assist is a planned exchange of momentum between a planet and a passing spacecraft. In a planet-centred frame, the encounter mainly turns the spacecraft’s velocity vector. Viewed from the Sun, that changed direction can increase or decrease the spacecraft’s orbital energy and speed, depending on how it approaches and passes the planet.

So a flyby is not simply a speed boost. During JUICE’s 2024 lunar-Earth sequence, the Moon encounter increased its speed relative to the Sun by 0.9 km/s; Earth then reduced it by 4.8 km/s. In September 2026, an Earth flyby increased its velocity by 3.5 km/s. These were different outcomes because the encounter geometry and each manoeuvre’s purpose were different. ESA describes the 2024 figures in its Earth-Moon double-flyby account and the 2026 figures in its completed Earth-flyby report.
The encounter does not capture JUICE into a lasting orbit around each planet, nor does gravity replace all onboard propulsion. The flybys redirect the trajectory and alter its energy; JUICE still needs its own propulsion for mission manoeuvres, including Jupiter orbit insertion.

Why not fly straight to Jupiter?
A direct route could be quicker, but reaching Jupiter and then braking into orbit would require substantially more launch energy and propellant than the mission can practically rely on. Using planetary flybys trades time and navigation complexity for fuel efficiency. ESA’s gravity-assist explainer describes the route as a way to conserve propellant while shaping a viable Jupiter-bound path.
That saved fuel matters after arrival. JUICE is designed to investigate Jupiter and its large moons Europa, Callisto and Ganymede, with Ganymede as its later orbital destination. Preserving propellant through cruise helps leave capacity for arrival and the operations needed to carry out that science.

Why the 2024 Moon-Earth double flyby was unusual
The 2024 manoeuvre used the Moon first and Earth just over 24 hours later. ESA reports that the Moon raised JUICE’s Sun-relative speed by 0.9 km/s, while Earth lowered it by 4.8 km/s and redirected the spacecraft toward Venus. The combined encounter turned the trajectory by 100 degrees; ESA estimated it would save around 100–150 kg of fuel. That fuel figure is an estimate, not a separately measured quantity.
Arranging two close encounters so near together added operational complexity. With only about a day between them, the team had little time to assess the lunar flyby and make any needed correction before the Earth encounter. ESA says the sequence required precise ground tracking, orbit determination and small correction manoeuvres. The Moon-Earth geometry had to align the spacecraft, both bodies and its target so that the fuel savings justified the added complexity. ESA’s explanation of the lunar-Earth manoeuvre details those constraints.

What the 2026 Earth flyby changed
On 28 September 2026, Earth deflected JUICE’s trajectory by 20 degrees and increased its velocity by 3.5 km/s, ESA reported. At closest approach, the spacecraft passed at an altitude of 8,640 km above the Indian Ocean. The encounter was designed to set up the next Earth flyby, planned for January 2029, which in turn is intended to put JUICE on its final path to Jupiter. The manoeuvre shows why “gravity assist” does not mean the spacecraft always gains speed: this encounter’s reported increase was useful because it came with the right change in direction for the route ahead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat the long route asks of the mission
Gravity assists reduce the propellant demand for major trajectory changes, but they make the itinerary dependent on precise timing and navigation. JUICE must pass each planet at the right position and angle to get the intended change; the 2024 double flyby also left little time between encounters for assessment and correction. Those requirements are part of the trade-off: a longer journey and demanding navigation in exchange for conserving fuel for Jupiter arrival and science operations.
