The Coalition’s reported promise to build a Keilor East station on Melbourne Airport Rail Link by 2031 collided with a public-interest objection from its own transport spokesman, Matthew Guy. In a 2026 opinion piece, The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald columnist framed the reversal as pork-barrelling: a pledge timed to an electoral opportunity in Niddrie. That is the columnist’s political argument, not a finding that the station lacks merit or that misconduct occurred.
What was the disagreement?
The opinion article reports that Premier Ben Carroll met Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to bring forward plans for an airport rail line. That same morning, Coalition leader Jess Wilson posted a video promising that a future Coalition government would deliver a Keilor East station by 2031 as part of the project.
The columnist inferred that the Liberal Party had prepared the video in response to Labor’s announcement, while qualifying that account with “As best as we can piece together.” The article does not establish the party’s campaign-planning process.
Guy’s objection
Matthew Guy, identified in the article as the Coalition’s public transport spokesman, argued that the station was a recent addition and had no public-interest case. He is quoted as saying: “The whole concept of a Keilor East station was never factored in to the original airport rail line. This has only come in, in the last few years, because of his seat. There is no public-interest case for it.”

Wilson’s response
Wilson reportedly dismissed Guy’s remarks as “historic comments from a time and place” and reaffirmed the pledge. The clash was therefore not simply over whether to build a station: it exposed a difference between a public objection by the party’s transport spokesman and its leader’s stated commitment.
Why did the columnist call it pork-barrelling?
The article connects Keilor East residents to Premier Ben Carroll’s seat of Niddrie, which it describes as marginal. The columnist argues that Wilson’s pledge appeared to follow an electoral opportunity there, and criticizes the Coalition for backing the project’s current design and timetable without examining alternatives or consulting Guy.

Those are the author’s interpretation and political judgment. The article supplies no polling, internal party records or primary project documents that independently establish why the pledge was made. “Pork-barrelling” is the opinion piece’s argumentative frame, not an adjudicated description of the commitment.
What does the 2031 pledge establish?
The reported date of 2031 is attached to the Coalition’s promise for a Keilor East station. A party pledge does not, by itself, establish project approval, allocated funding or a settled construction schedule. The opinion article does not provide documentation that resolves those questions.

It also calls the larger project “$12 billion-and-counting.” That is the columnist’s characterization in the 2026 piece; the article does not state a budget basis or provide an underlying estimate, so the figure should not be read as an independently verified current project cost.
What airport-rail choices are being debated?
The article sketches two broad approaches, but does not technically evaluate them or provide comparable cost, journey-time or capacity figures.

The central takeaway is narrower: Wilson reportedly backed a 2031 station pledge even after her transport spokesman publicly challenged its public-interest case. Whether that pledge is good transport policy requires project details and technical evidence that the article does not supply.
