Why JavaScript Freezes the Page—and How to Keep the UI Responsive

Long JavaScript jobs block the browser’s main thread, delaying input and rendering. Understand tasks and microtasks, then choose practical ways to keep the UI responsive.

JavaScript can freeze a browser page when a long-running job occupies the page’s main thread. Because the browser uses that thread for page code and important interface work, it cannot promptly process input or reach a rendering opportunity until the job finishes. The practical fix is to keep main-thread work short, split it into separate jobs, or move suitable computation to a web worker. MDN’s execution model explains why jobs run to completion; MDN’s in-depth event-loop guide describes how that affects the page.

What the browser event loop does

The event loop coordinates scripts, events, user interaction, networking, and rendering. It is useful to picture a browser page as having a main thread that runs JavaScript and also handles interface work. The formal model is more nuanced: the WHATWG HTML Standard cautions that an event loop does not necessarily correspond one-to-one with an operating-system thread.

For a practical mental model, an iteration runs at most one pending task, drains pending microtasks, and may then update rendering before continuing. This is not a guarantee that the browser paints after every callback or statement. Rendering is an opportunity coordinated by the event loop, not an automatic step after each piece of JavaScript.

Why a long JavaScript job blocks the interface

JavaScript jobs run to completion: one job is processed fully before another begins. If a script performs a lengthy calculation or enters an infinite loop, the browser cannot interrupt that job to handle a click, scroll, or other work on the same thread. The page may look frozen until the script yields by finishing its job. As MDN puts it, “Because your code runs in the same thread, using the same event loop, as the browser’s user interface, if your code blocks or enters an infinite loop, the browser itself will stall.”

This is why changing the DOM during a long loop does not guarantee that a user will see those changes immediately. The browser still needs a chance to reach rendering work. Keep individual units of main-thread work short so the event loop can return to other work.

Tasks, microtasks, and why Promises do not automatically let the page paint

Tasks include starting a script, dispatching an event, and running timer callbacks. Promise callbacks and MutationObserver callbacks are microtasks. In the simplified browser model, the event loop runs a task, drains the microtask queue until it is empty, and may then update rendering before the next task.

A microtask can add another microtask to the same queue, and that new work runs before the next task. A continually replenished or unbounded microtask chain can therefore keep later tasks and rendering from getting a turn. Promise.then() and queueMicrotask() are not general-purpose ways to yield so the browser can paint between callbacks; use microtasks for the ordering needs they are designed for, not to split heavy work.

Async waiting is different from CPU-heavy work

When code awaits an asynchronous result, such as a fetch() response or an IndexedDB operation, the browser can do other work while the application is waiting. That does not mean the waiting operation’s callback—or a calculation performed before or after it—runs away from the page’s main thread.

Marking a function async or using Promises does not make synchronous computation run on another thread. A CPU-heavy calculation still occupies the thread for as long as its synchronous job runs.

Choose how to handle lengthy computation

There is no universal workload threshold in the cited browser documentation for deciding when to use a worker. Choose based on whether the computation needs direct DOM access, whether it can be isolated and communicated through messages, and how much effort it takes to split the work or handle its data.

Approach Best fit Trade-off
Split work into separate main-thread jobs The work can be divided into smaller pieces and needs to interact with the page. The browser can return to other event-loop work between jobs, but you must organize the computation into chunks.
Move computation to a web worker Complex or lengthy computation can run independently of DOM updates. Workers run scripts outside the page’s main code, so the computation must be separated from direct DOM work and coordinated with the page.

Keep the main thread focused on page updates, layout, and rendering. Use a worker when the work can run independently, and keep data communication and the division of responsibilities in mind.

Choose an animation approach that fits the work

For an effect the browser can express directly, prefer a CSS animation. If animation needs JavaScript-controlled drawing, such as drawing on a canvas, use requestAnimationFrame() rather than an old-style interval loop. The choice depends on whether CSS can describe the effect or whether it requires JavaScript logic for each frame.

Reduce avoidable work on the main thread

  • Split lengthy computation into separate jobs when practical, or move independent computation to a worker.
  • Reduce unnecessary DOM changes and batch essential updates instead of doing avoidable work repeatedly.
  • Remove event listeners that are no longer needed, especially for events that fire continuously.
  • Use queueMicrotask() for specialized ordering, not as a substitute for yielding to later event-loop work.

These approaches address different causes of a stalled interface: shorter jobs let the browser return to its event loop, workers separate suitable computation from page code, and simpler updates and appropriate animation techniques reduce avoidable main-thread work.
