But the strict “zero-knowledge” description depends on your account settings: enabling email-based password recovery lets Sync keep an encrypted copy of your private encryption key in escrow, which Sync says gives its automated systems temporary access to that key when helping restore account access.
What “zero knowledge” means for Sync.com storage
In a zero-knowledge model, a cloud provider is designed not to possess the information needed to decrypt a customer’s stored files. Sync.com describes its core storage service as end-to-end encrypted by default: files are encrypted on the user’s device before they are transmitted, and Sync says it does not hold the key needed to read the stored files.

Sync.com’s 2025 SOC 3 report describes client-side encryption of file data using 256-bit AES before transmission to Sync.com. It also describes TLS protection for file data sent over public networks. These are statements in Sync’s report, not an independent assessment of the service’s cryptography.

Under the core storage design Sync describes, Sync does not ordinarily have the decryption key for your files. The important qualification is account recovery: the answer changes when email-based password reset is enabled. Sync’s Terms of Service say that, in this configuration, an encrypted copy of the private encryption key is held in escrow so Sync can help restore access.

- Certified to FIPS 197 - High-level information security standard approved by the U.S. Government
- Brute-Force Password Attack Protection - Data is automatically erased after 6 failed access attempts. The data and encryption key are securely destroyed and the crypto drive is reset
- Rugged Double-Layer Waterproof* Design - Protects the crypto drive against knocks, drops, break-in and submerging in water. The electronics are shielded by a hardended inner case. The rubberised silicone outer casing provides a final layer of protection
- Auto-lock - The crypto drive will automatically encrypt all data and lock when removed from a PC/Mac or when the screen saver or "computer lock" function is activated on the host PC/Mac
- Secure Entry - Data cannot be accessed without the correct high-strength alphanumeric 8-16 character password. A password hint option is available. The password hint cannot match the password
Sync states that recovery does not expose the user’s password. Instead, enabling the feature temporarily gives its automated systems access to the account encryption key. Sync’s Terms of Service, section 17.2, put the consequence plainly: “When this feature is enabled, your Account is not configured on a strictly zero-knowledge basis, as Sync must retain the technical ability to assist in recovering access to your Account by using the escrow key.”
That distinction matters: the password and the encryption key are not the same thing. Sync says it does not store or transmit your password, while the recovery feature involves an escrowed encrypted copy of the private key.

What happens if Sync.com is forced to hand over stored data?
Sync’s stated design is intended to prevent it from reading files encrypted with a key it does not possess. However, the recovery configuration is an exception to a strict zero-knowledge setup because Sync retains technical access to an escrowed key for recovery. The available information does not establish how every possible legal demand would be handled or provide an independent test of the service’s implementation. For the provider’s specific terms about the recovery feature, see Sync.com’s Terms of Service.
What if you forget your password?
Sync says it does not store or transmit your password. If you forget it, whether you can recover access depends on the recovery route available to your account and plan. Sync warns that disabling email-based recovery permanently deletes the escrowed key; if you then forget the password, Sync cannot recover the account through that route.

- Protection against brute force password attacks - Data is automatically erased after 6 unsuccessful access attempts. The data of the USB flash drive type c encryption with dual connectors is destroyed and the cryptographic drive is reset.
- Durable dual-layer waterproof design* — Protects the crypto reader from bumps, drops, run-in and immersion in water. The electronics are protected by a hardened internal case. Rubberized silicone outer case provides a final layer of protection.
- Auto-Lock —The cryptographic key automatically encrypts all data and locks when removed from a PC/Mac or when screen protection or "computer lock" is enabled.
- Secure Entry —Data on these flash drives cannot be accessed without the correct alphanumeric password of 8 to 16 characters. A password indication option is available for this flash drive. The hint cannot match the password.
Before changing the setting, check the instructions for your account in Sync’s password recovery help page and password reset help page. Sync says some plans may require email-based reset or may not allow it to be disabled, so do not assume every account has the same controls.
Choosing between stricter privacy and easier recovery
The practical choice is between removing the escrowed recovery key and retaining a provider-assisted recovery option. The right setting depends on how you weigh those risks and what your plan permits.

- FIPS 197 with XTS-AES 256-bit Encryption: Provides business-grade security with hardware-based encryption to protect your sensitive data
- Brute Force and BadUSB Attack Protection: Safeguards against unauthorized access attempts and malicious USB attacks with digitally-signed firmware
- Multi-Password Option with Complex/Passphrase modes: Offers flexible password configuration options to meet various security requirements and user preferences
- New Passphrase Mode: Enhanced security feature allowing users to create longer, more memorable password phrases for easier access without compromising protection
- Dual Read-Only (Write-Protect) Settings: Enables write protection functionality to prevent accidental data modification or deletion when needed
- Keep email-based recovery enabled if having a recovery route is more important to you than maintaining a strictly zero-knowledge configuration. Sync says this setting keeps an encrypted copy of the private key in escrow for account recovery.
- Disable email-based recovery if you prefer not to leave that key in escrow and accept that Sync cannot recover the account through that route if you forget your password. Sync says the escrowed key is permanently deleted when recovery is disabled.
Check your own plan and account settings before deciding: availability and defaults can vary. Keep your password somewhere safe, and make sure you understand the recovery options available to you before relying on the account as the only copy of important files.

Sync’s Terms say selected content may temporarily be subject to a different level of encryption to support some optional features. The encryption available can therefore depend on plan, privacy settings, and which features are in use. The cited company materials do not provide a complete feature-by-feature inventory of these exceptions or establish independent cryptographic testing. Treat “zero knowledge” as a description of Sync’s intended access model in a particular configuration, not an unconditional guarantee for every feature and account setting.
