The reaction depends on what the market had already priced in, the outlook’s assumptions, and the company’s broader results. A rally is a reaction, not proof that growth will continue or that the shares are undervalued.
Why a raised forecast can lift a stock
Share prices respond to changes in expectations about future results. Investors compare the new outlook with the company’s earlier guidance, analyst estimates available before the announcement, and what the stock price may already reflect. A higher forecast can therefore be positive news if it exceeds those expectations.

The reverse can also happen: a company may beat estimates for the quarter just reported but see its shares fall if its forward outlook disappoints. Charles Schwab’s March 26, 2026 explainer on earnings guidance describes how forward-looking information can outweigh strong reported results in the near-term share-price reaction.

S&P Global Market Intelligence summarized a study of U.S. EPS-guidance announcements from January 2003 through February 2015; companies issuing guidance above consensus estimates or prior guidance had positive excess returns in that study. The summary does not give an IT-services-specific effect size, prove that guidance caused every reaction, or establish that the effect persisted.

What to check in a specific earnings announcement
Compare the new outlook with both prior guidance and consensus
Write down the old and new guidance ranges, then compare the new range with analyst consensus immediately before the announcement. Check reported results and guidance separately: beating quarterly EPS estimates does not guarantee that the outlook also beat expectations. Schwab’s guidance explainer discusses why expectations and forward guidance matter to the reaction.
Find out what management says changed
Read the earnings release and management’s remarks for the stated drivers of a revision. Depending on the business, these could include demand, contract or bookings measures, project timing, pricing, utilization, or delivery capacity. Treat management’s explanation as the company’s account of its outlook, not as independent proof of the cause.

For example, ServiceNow said its raised subscription-revenue outlook in its Q2 2026 release reflected strength in net-new annual contract value. That is a company-specific explanation, not a rule for IT-services companies generally.

Review the whole outlook, not just revenue or EPS
Look at the operating measures the company reports and consider how they fit its business model. ServiceNow’s Q2 2026 release included subscription-revenue, current remaining performance obligation, operating-margin, and free-cash-flow-margin guidance. Palantir’s release included outlook for revenue, U.S. commercial revenue, adjusted operating income, and adjusted free cash flow. These examples illustrate why a single headline number may not capture the full update; they are not a representative sample of IT-services companies.
Check definitions and assumptions
Look for constant-currency presentation, acquisitions, unusual items, and adjusted or non-GAAP definitions. Compare equivalent measures and read the company’s explanations and reconciliations. An adjusted measure is not automatically equivalent to a GAAP result or to cash generated by the business. ServiceNow and Palantir provide examples of outlooks with multiple measures in their respective releases.
Separate the business update from the investment decision
A price rise tells you how the market reacted at that time; it does not establish whether a stock is attractive at its current price. The SEC’s investor guidance on stock-market data notes that analyst recommendations can influence prices, sometimes temporarily without a recent change in a company’s prospects or fundamentals. For a specific company, start with its earnings release and public call, then consult its SEC filings for fuller context. The SEC also advises investors to research reports and analyst conflicts rather than rely solely on a recommendation.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
The available evidence supports an expectations-based explanation for why a raised outlook can coincide with a stock-price increase. It does not show that IT-services stocks always rise after upward revisions, provide a typical sector-wide percentage gain, or establish why a particular company’s shares moved. Explaining an individual move requires the exact announcement, prior guidance, pre-announcement consensus, management’s remarks, and market-price context.
For any particular stock, refresh its latest disclosures, guidance, consensus baseline, valuation, and announcement-date information. This is investor education, not individualized financial advice.
