Could Astronauts Use Lunar Lava Tubes as Shelter? Benefits and Risks

Potentially—but lunar lava tubes are promising shelter candidates, not ready-made astronaut bases. A sufficiently deep, stable tube could reduce exposure to radiation and micrometeorites and buffer temperature swings. But a lunar pit is not automatically a confirmed lava tube, and no source cited here establishes a crew-ready site. Astronauts would need a mapped, structurally assessed location with safe access, power and communications before relying on it as shelter.

What is known about lunar pits and lava tubes?

A lunar pit is an observed opening in the Moon’s surface. It may expose an overhang or lead into a larger underground space, but an opening alone does not prove that a long, accessible lava tube lies beyond it. NASA’s 2014 account reported more than 200 known pits at the time and said about 16 were probably collapsed lava tubes; those figures are historical, not a current exhaustive inventory. NASA’s account of lunar pit observations describes the evidence and its limits.

Some openings have overhangs consistent with access to caves or voids. For Mare Tranquillitatis, the European Space Agency (ESA) reported radar evidence for an accessible conduit beneath the pit, describing it as a promising site while calling for more surveys and robotic investigation. That evidence supports exploring the location; it does not establish the full extent, condition or crew suitability of the underground space. ESA’s 2024 account of a potential lunar shelter explains the finding.

How could a lava tube protect astronauts?

Potential shielding from radiation and impacts

Rock above a habitat could block or reduce some incoming radiation and protect it from small micrometeorite impacts. The amount of protection would depend on the roof’s thickness and geometry and on where the habitat sat within the cave. NASA-indexed work published in 2002 modeled galactic cosmic rays and solar particle events interacting with lunar rock and regolith. Its favorable result applies to the modeled conditions, not to a crew dose measured inside a lunar cave. NASA Technical Reports Server: “Lunar lava tube radiation safety analysis”.

A 2014 NASA article quoted researcher Robert Wagner describing a habitat placed several dozen metres under an overhang as potentially very safe. That was an expert assessment of a possible placement, not a verified safety result. No astronaut exposure measurements inside a lunar lava tube are reported in the sources cited here; a cave should not be described as eliminating radiation or guaranteeing safety.

More stable temperatures

Temperature stability is another attraction. NASA reported an estimated temperature of about 17 °C in the permanently shadowed region of the Mare Tranquillitatis pit, with slight modeled variation. The same report gave comparison values for the lunar surface of about 127 °C during the day and −173 °C at night. The 17 °C figure applies to that particular pit region; conditions deeper in a connected cave are inferred, not directly measured in the analysis. NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter temperature report describes the estimate.

What are the main risks and unknowns?

Issue Potential advantage What must be established
Radiation and micrometeorites Overlying rock could reduce some exposure and impact risk. Protection depends on roof thickness, cave geometry and habitat position. Local conditions and dose require assessment; the modeled result is not a site measurement.
Temperature A shadowed pit or cave may be more thermally stable than the exposed surface. The reported 17 °C estimate concerns a specific shadowed region of Mare Tranquillitatis. Other locations and deeper interiors need measurements.
Access and evacuation A skylight may provide an entry into underground space. Steep walls, unstable rims, rubble and unknown passages could make descent and exit hazardous. Safe crew access and evacuation routes have not been demonstrated.
Structure and usable space A large, stable tube could offer room for a protected habitat. Dimensions, roof and floor integrity, rubble distribution and usable volume need mapping and engineering assessment. No cited source certifies a crew site.
Power and communications Rock cover could reduce some environmental exposure. Caves receive no direct sunlight. A mission would need dependable power, communications and environmental monitoring underground.

These questions are linked: knowing that an opening exists does not tell mission planners whether a rover can enter it, whether a habitat can be installed or whether crews can leave in an emergency. Even the favorable thermal estimate is not a general description of every pit or tube.

What would it take to use one as shelter?

ESA mission studies describe a sequence of proposed work rather than a completed lunar mission. The practical path is to investigate a candidate remotely and robotically before considering crew use:

  1. Survey the rim: map the opening and surrounding terrain to identify candidate routes and hazards.
  2. Plan safe access: determine whether robots can reach the rim and descend without encountering unacceptable slopes, unstable material or obstructions.
  3. Deploy probes or rovers: inspect the pit and any accessible passage, then map its geometry, floor and roof conditions.
  4. Measure the environment: assess radiation, temperature and other local conditions where equipment or a habitat would actually sit.
  5. Design underground operations: provide power, communications and a way to monitor systems and recover equipment below the surface.
  6. Qualify the site for people: establish structural suitability, usable volume, installation methods and safe crew access and egress.

ESA’s mission-planning account and overview of work toward exploring lunar caves discuss scouting, descent, mapping, energy needs and power and data budgets. These are mission concepts and studies, not evidence that a cave has already been explored or prepared for astronauts.

So, could astronauts use lunar lava tubes as shelter?

Yes, in principle: a deep, stable and accessible tube could offer useful shielding and a more temperature-stable setting than the surface. But the evidence supports only a promising possibility. A lunar pit may lead to a localized void rather than a large tube, and the candidate locations have not been shown by the sources cited here to be crew-qualified. Robotic mapping and site-specific engineering assessments would need to establish safe access, structural integrity, usable space, environmental conditions, power and communications before astronauts could depend on one as shelter.
