Why is my Grammarly not working?
The cause depends on where the failure occurs. Try Grammarly in another supported website or a new document, then follow the matching path below. A failure limited to one page usually points to that site or field; a failure across multiple sites calls for checks of the extension, browser, account, or connection.

- One website or text field: Check site access and field compatibility.
- Everywhere in the browser: Check the extension, browser version, and sign-in state.
- Editor or document errors: Check the connection, security software, and available local storage.
Why is Grammarly not showing up?
Check that the extension is active on the site
- Confirm the Grammarly browser extension is installed and enabled.
- If its toolbar icon is gray on the affected page, click the icon and turn on Check text with browser extension.
- Check that the extension is allowed to read site data for that website, then restart the browser after changing access.

Check the size and type of text field
Grammarly says its browser extension does not initialize in text areas shorter than 38 pixels high. Some page frameworks, incompatible text boxes, or fields inside iframes may also prevent it from appearing. A missing indicator in one field does not necessarily mean the extension is broken everywhere. See Grammarly’s extension troubleshooting guidance.

Why is Grammarly not working on this website?
If Grammarly works elsewhere, treat the problem as site-specific before resetting the browser or account. Some websites or fields may not be supported or may have integration issues. Grammarly specifically lists Gmail, Google Docs, and WordPress among sites where users may encounter issues.
- Test a different supported site or a new document to confirm Grammarly works there.
- On the affected page, verify Check text with browser extension is enabled and that the extension has permission to access that site.
- Restart the browser after changing permissions. If the extension still fails only on that page, try Grammarly’s own website-specific troubleshooting steps.
As a workaround for some extension-on-one-site problems, Grammarly suggests trying its Windows app (Windows 10 or newer) or Mac app (macOS 11 or newer). This may help with certain workflows, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every site or application.

Why isn’t Grammarly working in Google Docs?
Google Docs is among the sites Grammarly identifies as a possible source of website issues. First check whether Grammarly works in another supported site or a new document; if it does, focus on the Docs integration rather than reinstalling or resetting everything.

- If the Grammarly icon is gray, open it and enable Check text with browser extension.

Does your browser or another extension interfere?
Check browser compatibility
Grammarly’s Editor support page lists these minimum browser versions: Chrome 68+, Safari 12.1+, Firefox 78+, and Microsoft Edge 79+. These are listed minimums, not a recommendation to stay on an older release; Grammarly recommends the latest stable browser and operating-system versions. Check the current system requirements if you are unsure whether your setup is supported.

Test for conflicts
- Temporarily disable other browser extensions and restart the browser.
- Test Grammarly again. If it starts working, re-enable the other extensions one at a time to identify a conflict.
- For a failure limited to one website, clear cached browser data if Grammarly’s site-specific steps recommend it.
Disabling extensions is a diagnostic test, not a reason to leave useful protections or tools turned off. Grammarly also suggests clearing cookies or trying another browser for some persistent browser problems; clearing cookies can sign you out, so be ready to sign in again.
Why does Grammarly keep logging me out or hide features?
A stale sign-in state or cookie setting can affect Grammarly’s features or keep the Editor and extension from staying connected. Grammarly’s recommended refresh includes signing out of the Editor, clearing Grammarly-specific cookies, allowing Grammarly cookies, signing back in through the extension, and restarting the browser.

What to do when Grammarly Editor disconnects
If the Editor reports a connection problem or repeatedly interrupts work, restart the browser and reconnect to the network. If the problem continues, test the Editor in an incognito window. Grammarly also recommends checking whether a VPN, proxy, antivirus, or firewall is interfering.

If you temporarily change a security setting to diagnose the issue, restore protection afterward. If the test points to a block, use Grammarly’s allowlist guidance rather than leaving security software disabled. Incognito testing and temporary security checks help isolate a cause; they do not prove the same cause applies to other sites or devices.
How to fix “Your doc is safe” or other document errors
Grammarly says insufficient local storage can cause the “Your doc is safe” error. If storage is sufficient, test in incognito mode and disable other browser extensions temporarily to look for a conflict. See the official document-error troubleshooting steps.
When to contact Grammarly Support
If the checks do not resolve the problem, give support the details needed to distinguish a site, browser, account, or connection issue:
- Your operating system and version.
- Your browser and version, or the Grammarly product surface you are using.
- The affected website or app and the exact error message.
- Whether Grammarly works on another site or in a new document.
- Which troubleshooting steps changed the behavior, if any.
Grammarly may ask for extension logs when investigating a technical issue. Follow its instructions for collecting and sending them; do not post diagnostic files publicly. See the official support troubleshooting guidance.
