For a conventional seven-string guitar tuned B1–E2–A2–D3–G3–B3–E4, D’Addario’s 10–59 Regular Light set is a well-supported starting point: the manufacturer designed it for seven-string guitars and says it aims for similar tension to its popular six-string gauge on a seven-string instrument. It is a baseline, not a universal best. Scale length, tuning, construction and preferred feel all affect the result.

Gauge ranges are not enough to establish equal tension or identical feel across brands. Compare every string’s gauge, particularly the seventh, rather than choosing by the first and last numbers alone.

What “standard seven-string” means

The conventional low-B tuning adds a lower B to the six familiar guitar notes: B1–E2–A2–D3–G3–B3–E4. Guitar World’s seven-string tuning guide gives this reference tuning. Seven-string guitars can also use different tunings, so the recommendations here assume this conventional setup and a standard electric seven-string set.

How to choose a feel

Choose 10–59 for a practical baseline

D’Addario’s EXL110-7 is the clearest starting point for standard low B because its maker specifically identifies it as a seven-string set intended to produce similar tension to its popular gauge on a seven-string guitar. That manufacturer rationale makes it a sensible first set to try; it does not establish that it will suit every scale length or player.

Go lighter for easier bends and less effort

D’Addario’s 09–54 EXL120-7 and Ernie Ball’s 9–52 Super Slinky are listed seven-string options at the lighter end of the choices here. Ernie Ball’s general guide says lighter gauges are easier to bend and require less effort. Ernie Ball’s string-gauge guide

Choose a heavier low string or heavier set for firmer feel

The 10–62 Skinny Top Heavy Bottom set emphasizes a heavier bottom while keeping the treble strings more bend-friendly, according to Ernie Ball. Its 11–58 Power Slinky is another listed option when you want a heavier overall set. Ernie Ball notes that heavier gauges require more finger pressure and exert more tension on the neck in its gauge guide.

Check scale length and tuning before settling on a set

Gauge alone does not determine tension. D’Addario’s calculator accounts for scale length, tuning, string gauge and construction, so enter the actual specifications of your guitar and compare candidate sets there: D’Addario String Tension Pro. A longer scale, alternate tuning or a preference for unusually light or firm tension can change which set feels suitable.

If the guitar is tuned substantially lower than low B, do not transfer a six-string gauge suggestion directly to the seven-string. Ernie Ball’s dropped-tuning guide explains the general trade-off that lower tunings tend to need heavier strings to avoid a loose feel, but its specific examples are for six-string setups: Ernie Ball’s gauge guide. Use a calculator or compare the complete seven-string setup instead.

When to build a custom set

If a stock set has the right treble feel but the seventh string feels too loose or too stiff, individual gauges let you adjust that string without changing the whole set. Ernie Ball lists individual strings that can be used to tailor a gauge mix: single strings. Check that the selected string fits the guitar’s hardware and intended tuning, and reassess tension using the guitar’s actual scale length.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you

The manufacturers establish which gauges they sell and offer general guidance about tension and feel. The cited sources do not provide a controlled, same-guitar comparison proving one set is the tested winner. Treat 10–59 as a manufacturer-supported baseline for conventional low B, then choose based on the instrument’s scale length, tuning and the feel you prefer.
