A passive stylus that skips is not automatically worn out. Dirt or damage on the tip, a tip the screen cannot detect reliably, or a touchscreen problem can all cause missed input. Test the screen with a finger, clean and inspect the stylus according to its maker’s instructions, then check whether the tip is replaceable for your exact model. There is no established universal replacement schedule for passive styluses.
How a passive stylus works
A passive capacitive stylus works much like a finger: it needs no battery and interacts with the touchscreen through a conductive tip. Tips are often larger and made of rubber or conductive foam, though designs vary. For example, the Adonit Pro 4 uses a disc; that construction is specific to that model, not a feature of every passive stylus. HP explains the difference between passive styluses and active pens, while Adonit describes the Pro 4’s disc design.

Passive styluses generally do not provide the fine-point writing, pressure sensitivity, hover, or palm rejection associated with compatible active pens. A device that expects an active digitizer may not work properly with a passive stylus, even if both products are called pens or styluses.
Why a passive stylus may stop registering
The tip is dirty
Dirt on the tip can interfere with contact. Adonit says the Pro 4 disc can get dirty and recommends rubbing it back and forth on a microfiber cloth, then inspecting it. That is guidance for the Pro 4’s disc; follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions for other tip materials.

- 【Stylus for Touch Screen】This stylus can be used on touch screen, designed to replace your fingers, the stylus can free up your fingers and provide higher sensitivity and response on the screen.
- 【Capacitive stylus】This is a capacitive stylus (battery-free, requires no charging, and functions like a fingertip)—not an active stylus. It does not support pressure sensitivity or palm rejection. However, it allows for tapping, scrolling, note-taking, and drawing on touchscreens; if you require professional-grade drawing capabilities on an iPad, please choose an active stylus instead.
- 【2-in-1 Stylus Pen】This stylus features two different tips: a flexible transparent disc tip and a rubber tip. Applying moderate pressure when using the rubber tip ensures full contact with the screen—especially on screens with protective films—thereby enabling stable signal transmission. The combination of the rubber tip and the disc tip offers two distinct touch experiences. Please note that the plastic piece on the transparent disc is an integral part of the tip and cannot be removed.
- 【Works On Capacitive Touch Screens】Compatible with iPad, iPad Air/mini, iPhone, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Android tablets, Kindle and smartphones. Also works over most screen protectors — glide, no scratch. The stylus is used to replace your fingers on a touchscreen, Avoid rubbing your fingers and leaving fingerprints on touchscreen devices. If it cannot be used for writing on some devices, This may be due to limitations in the settings of touchscreen devices. - 【Multiple Usage Scenarios】Whether you are taking notes in class, reviewing documents at work, drawing creative designs, or enjoying mobile games, this universal stylus pen delivers a smooth and comfortable touch experience. It is ideal for writing, sketching, annotating, scrolling, and precise screen control on tablets and smartphones. From daily tasks to creative projects, this stylus helps you capture ideas anytime and anywhere.
The tip is worn or damaged
A worn, cracked, bent, or missing tip may no longer make reliable contact. Adonit says the Pro 4 disc can wear over time. That does not establish a wear rate or replacement schedule for other passive styluses.
The tip and screen are a poor match
Some touchscreens may not reliably detect a tip with too little surface area. A fine-point active stylus intended for a device with a compatible digitizer is a different input technology, not necessarily a drop-in replacement for a passive capacitive stylus. HP notes that tip size and device compatibility can affect detection.

The touchscreen or device is the problem
If finger input also misses or fails in the same area, the stylus is not confirmed as the cause. A screen protector, case, app, software issue, or other device-specific factor can matter on some systems. Samsung lists such factors for its active S Pen systems; that guidance is not a universal troubleshooting rule for passive styluses. Samsung’s S Pen troubleshooting page is specific to those products.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck the cause before replacing anything
- Test the screen with a finger. Try the same area where the stylus skips. If finger input fails too, troubleshoot the touchscreen or device first. HP recommends testing touch input when a stylus is inaccurate or stops working.
- Inspect and clean the tip. Look for dirt, deformation, cracks, looseness, or a missing component. Use the cleaning method specified for your stylus. For the Adonit Pro 4 disc, Adonit recommends a microfiber cloth and inspection afterward.
- Try a compatibility check. If available, test the stylus on another compatible touchscreen, or try a known-compatible stylus on the original device. This can help distinguish a stylus fault from a screen problem, but compatibility matters: a passive capacitive stylus and an active digital pen are not interchangeable by default.
- Confirm the exact stylus and device models. Check whether the device supports passive capacitive input and whether the stylus maker lists it as compatible. Similar-looking tips may use different mechanisms or dimensions.
- Check the manufacturer’s replacement instructions. Replace only with a tip specified for that stylus model or generation. If the tip is not replaceable, or the stylus remains damaged or unreliable after these checks, contact the manufacturer or replace the stylus.
When to replace the tip—or the whole stylus
Replace a tip when it is visibly damaged or the manufacturer’s guidance says it should be replaced, and use only the specified part. Whether a tip can be replaced depends on the model:

- ZAGG Pro Stylus: ZAGG says its active front tip is replaceable, while its capacitive back-end tip cannot be replaced individually. This is a hybrid stylus example, not a general rule for passive styluses.
- Huawei M-Pencil: Huawei’s guidance applies to its active M-Pencil family. It advises replacing the tip when internal metal is exposed and warns that tips are not interchangeable across all generations.
- Samsung S Pen: Samsung’s current U.S. guidance says replacement tips are not available for purchase for Galaxy S23 Ultra and newer models; a damaged tip on those models requires a new S Pen. This applies to the models named in Samsung’s guidance, not passive styluses generally.
Consult the manufacturer’s instructions before buying a tip: replacement support and compatibility can differ even within a product family. Adonit Pro 4 support, ZAGG’s Pro Stylus tip instructions, Huawei Canada’s M-Pencil guidance, and Samsung U.S. S Pen support document these model-specific examples.
The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a standard number of months, hours, or strokes for replacing a passive stylus. Use the condition of the tip, persistent failure after troubleshooting, and the instructions for your model—not a calendar interval.
