If your iPad is not charging, first check the outlet, adapter, cable and charging indicator. A deeply depleted battery may need a few minutes before the screen responds; temperature limits can also pause charging. Work through the checks below before concluding that the iPad needs service.
1. Check whether the iPad is charging
When the iPad is charging, a lightning bolt appears on the battery icon in the status bar or on the Lock Screen. If the battery is very low, it may need up to 10 minutes connected to power before the iPad can be used. With an extremely low battery, the screen may stay blank for up to two minutes before the low-battery image appears. Those delays alone do not show that the cable or iPad is faulty. Apple’s charging guidance explains these indicators and delays.

2. Check the entire power path
Connect the iPad to a working wall adapter and outlet with a USB charging cable, preferably the one supplied with the device. If you are using a computer, it must be powered on and not asleep; some computer ports may not supply enough power, and the iPad may show “Not Charging.” Apple also lists a powered USB hub or docking station, an Apple-certified accessory, and a compatible Magic Keyboard connected to power as possible charging sources. Do not rely on a keyboard port unless it is a high-power USB port. See Apple’s troubleshooting steps.
- Check that the wall outlet works by trying another outlet or a known-working device.
- Reconnect the cable securely at both ends and check whether the charging indicator appears.
- If there is still no indication, try another compatible cable, then another adapter, changing one item at a time where possible.
If a substitution works, that helps narrow down which part of the power path may be involved. If none works, it does not by itself prove the iPad is defective.

3. Confirm the cable and adapter fit your iPad
iPad models do not all use the same connector. Check the port on your specific iPad before choosing a cable; do not assume it uses USB-C. For a USB-C iPad, Apple recommends connecting a USB-C cable to a compatible adapter. Apple’s guidance for a third-party USB-C adapter specifies a USB-C output port, 5–15 V / 3 A, and at least 15 W of power output. See Apple’s iPad power-adapter guidance and USB-C charging information.
4. Tell slow charging from a charging failure
If a supported fast-charging iPad is connected to a charger that cannot provide optimal power, Settings > Battery may show a “Slow Charger” message. Apple says wired charging at 7.5 W or less may take longer than expected. Charging also slows after about 80% as the iPad manages heat and battery stress; that behavior by itself is not evidence of a fault. Apple’s charging guide describes these behaviors.

5. Check for a temperature pause
If the Lock Screen says “Charging On Hold. Charging will resume when iPad returns to normal temperature,” the iPad has paused charging because of temperature. Charging can slow or stop in very hot or cold conditions and resumes automatically when the battery returns to a safe range. Apple recommends charging in an environment between 32° and 95° F (0° and 35° C). Move the iPad out of direct sunlight or away from cold conditions and let it return to normal gradually. If it tends to heat up while charging, removing a heat-trapping case may help. Apple’s iPad user guide covers temperature-related charging.
6. Force restart the iPad
If the cable, adapter, power source and temperature checks do not resolve the problem, Apple recommends a force restart. The button sequence depends on whether the iPad has a Home button. Follow Apple’s restart steps if you need model-specific guidance.

7. Keep liquid out of the charging port
If you suspect liquid is in the charging port, do not plug in the cable. Apple warns against connecting a charging cable in that situation. Do not insert objects into the port or attempt a port repair based on a charging symptom alone. See Apple’s charging guidance.
8. When to contact Apple Support
If the iPad still will not charge after you have tried a known-working outlet, compatible cable and adapter, allowed time for a deeply depleted battery, checked for temperature conditions and force-restarted it, follow Apple’s support flow. A charging symptom alone cannot establish whether the cause is the battery, port, accessory or another issue; a specific diagnosis and service options require assessment of the device.
