If Always On Display (AOD) is using more screen time than you need, change its When to show setting to Tap to show, Auto or As scheduled—or turn AOD off. These built-in options can limit when the lock-screen information appears. The exact controls and menu path depend on your Galaxy model and software.
How to limit Always On Display
-
Open Settings and search for Always On Display. On supported software, you can also open Settings > Lock screen and AOD > Always On Display.

Samsung’s One UI 6.1 guidance describes the following choices. Availability and wording can differ on other versions.
| Setting | When information appears | Convenience and battery trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Always | AOD remains visible continuously. | Most convenient for glancing at the screen, but keeps the display on longer. |
| Tap to show | AOD appears briefly after you tap the screen. | Limits display time; you need to tap to check. |
| As scheduled | AOD appears during hours you select. | Keeps it available on your schedule and hidden outside those hours. |
| Auto | On supported One UI 6.1 devices, Samsung says AOD is suppressed when the phone detects a dark place or that it is in a purse or pocket. | Can keep AOD available without showing it in those detected conditions. |
| Off | AOD does not appear. | Removes the at-a-glance display and its AOD screen-on time. |
Samsung’s mode descriptions and software qualifications are in its Always On Display guidance. Samsung also explains that longer display time uses more battery: “Any setting that keeps the display on longer will use more battery.” That is a general battery trade-off, not a measured estimate of how much a particular setting change will save.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why can’t I turn AOD on?
Check whether Power saving mode is enabled. Samsung says AOD is unavailable while this mode is on, because power saving restricts higher-power features. Turning off power saving may restore AOD controls, but it also removes that broader battery-saving restriction. See Samsung UK’s battery-drain guidance.

What if the battery still drains quickly?
AOD may contribute, but the available Samsung guidance does not establish that it is the sole cause of fast drain or give a dependable percentage saved by changing modes. Check other likely contributors before attributing the problem to one setting:
-
Review the phone’s Battery usage graph and app-level usage to see what is consuming power.
-
Look for apps with substantial background activity. Samsung suggests considering sleeping or deep-sleeping lists for apps you rarely use.
-
Consider whether setup or optimization is still running after a new device setup; Samsung notes that this can temporarily increase usage.

Check whether the phone often has a weak signal, which can increase battery use.
Menu paths and controls for these checks vary by model and software version. If drain persists after reviewing settings and app usage, Samsung’s guidance is a starting point for further troubleshooting.
