A 10Gbps link indicator means the devices negotiated a 10Gbps connection; it does not guarantee that a speed test, file copy, or internet download will deliver 10Gbps of useful data. First identify what is slow, then run a network-only test between capable local hosts. That separates Ethernet performance from internet service, storage, and file-sharing limits.
First, identify what your speed test is measuring
These results describe different parts of the path, so they are not interchangeable:
- Link rate: The negotiated connection between a network adapter and its directly connected switch or peer. A 10Gbps indication confirms that link state, not end-to-end payload speed.
- LAN throughput test: Traffic sent between two local computers. This is the best first measurement for isolating the network from the internet and file storage.
- WAN speed test: Traffic that also depends on your internet plan, router, ISP path, and test server. A slow WAN result alone does not establish a local 10GbE problem.
- File copy: A complete workload involving the network, both storage devices, CPU, and the file-sharing software. A slow copy does not by itself identify Ethernet as the bottleneck.
Write down the test, its units, the two endpoints, and whether the result is transmit or receive. Compare like with like when repeating a test.
Run a repeatable LAN throughput test
Use a throughput tool such as iperf or Microsoft NTttcp between two 10GbE-capable endpoints. Connect them through a switch capable of full line rate without blocking; otherwise the switch path may constrain the result. Intel recommends testing interface throughput this way rather than relying on a file copy.

Record the endpoint pair, direction, test duration, stream settings, result, and CPU load. If you change a setting, change one thing at a time and repeat under comparable conditions. A short test or single TCP stream can be a limiting factor in some setups, but that is a hypothesis to check, not a universal explanation. A secondary iperf3 guide discusses these possible constraints; treat them as test variables rather than proof of a fault.
Check that both hosts can sustain the workload
A 10GbE adapter cannot overcome a host-side limit. Confirm that each endpoint has a suitable NIC, driver, CPU capacity, and bus connection. For an add-in card, check the PCIe generation and the slot’s actual electrical lane wiring: a physically long slot does not guarantee that all lanes are connected.
When possible, test each host against a known-capable peer or swap which endpoint sends and receives. If the low result follows one machine or direction, investigate that host and its adapter before replacing other parts of the network. Intel’s throughput-testing guidance covers direct interface testing as a way to isolate endpoint performance.
Verify link settings and the physical path
Check negotiated speed and duplex at both ends, then compare the NIC and switch-port configuration. Make sure the cable or optical connection is supported for the intended data rate and that the adapters, switch ports, and media are compatible. A device-specific configuration can produce unexpectedly low or one-way throughput even when the link reports 10Gbps.

For example, a Broadcom support case describes transmit traffic capped at 1Gbps on a particular ESXi/Broadcom NIC and Cisco Nexus setup despite a 10Gbps negotiated link. The case discusses matching a manually fixed switch speed and checking firmware and physical-layer integrity. It is an example of a configuration issue, not a general recommendation to force speed settings; follow the guidance for your own hardware.
Inspect interface counters and logs for CRC, symbol, or FCS errors that increase during a test. Cisco’s troubleshooting procedure treats stable error counters as the expected condition and recommends validating physical connectivity and optics. For additional layer-1 checks, NVIDIA’s Cumulus Linux 5.12 guide covers signal integrity, BER and FEC, marginal modules, cables, and fiber patching.
If diagnostics point to a specific medium, verify the details before swapping it: copper, DAC, and optical links have different compatibility requirements. For an SFP+ connection, confirm that both devices support the proposed SFP+ DAC cable, its length, and its cable type. For fiber, check the transceiver, fiber type, distance, and endpoint support. A replacement adapter is only relevant if the host interface is inadequate or testing implicates it; check system compatibility and the PCIe slot’s actual lane count first.

Start with a known-supported MTU and verify it across both endpoints and every relevant part of the switching path. Do not change MTU on one machine and assume the rest of the path uses the same value. NVIDIA’s WinOF-2 v24.10 documentation warns that packets may be lost when a port MTU exceeds the switch’s maximum.

Jumbo frames are an option only when the whole path supports the selected frame size; they are not a prerequisite for useful 10GbE throughput. Check for packet loss and errors before changing frame settings, then retest after any change.
If the LAN test is fast but file copies are slow
Keep the network and file-transfer paths separate in your diagnosis. If a repeatable host-to-host test is healthy but SMB, NFS, or another file copy is slow, observe CPU and application behavior and measure the source and destination storage. The copy depends on all of those components, so the network-only test cannot promise a particular file-copy rate.
If the LAN test itself is slow, continue checking the endpoints, switch path, link configuration, physical-layer errors, and loss before tuning file sharing. Compare tests using the same hosts, direction, duration, stream settings, and switch path; otherwise a changed result may reflect a changed test rather than a fix.
