How to Fix Slow Wi-Fi After Changing Router Settings

Diagnose slow Wi-Fi after a router setting change by comparing wired and wireless results, then test one router setting at a time.

If Wi-Fi slowed down after you changed a router setting, first compare it with Ethernet, then undo or test one setting at a time. This separates a Wi-Fi radio problem from a slow modem, internet connection, or individual device—and avoids making several changes that are hard to reverse.

Find out whether the problem is Wi-Fi or the internet connection

Run a speed test on the affected device, then repeat it from another device if available. Keep each device in the same location for its tests, and run more than once so a single result does not drive your diagnosis. If you can, compare with a device connected to the router by Ethernet.

  • Ethernet is normal, but Wi-Fi is slow: Focus on wireless settings, signal conditions, or the affected device’s Wi-Fi capability.
  • Both Ethernet and Wi-Fi are slow: A Wi-Fi radio setting alone is unlikely to explain the problem. Check the modem, router-to-modem connection, and ISP path before tuning channels.
  • Only one device is slow: Compare another device at the same location. If it performs normally, investigate the slow device’s Wi-Fi support, driver or operating-system state, and adapter settings.

If your setup allows it, connect a computer directly to the modem and test again. TP-Link advises restarting the modem before the router; if the direct-modem result is still slow, the modem or ISP connection may be the issue. Follow your provider’s guidance for equipment that it supplies or manages. TP-Link’s slow-internet troubleshooting steps also recommend trying another Ethernet cable if a cable may be faulty; a Cat6 cable or better is one option for that wired diagnostic, not a fix for slow Wi-Fi by itself.

Undo the recent change without losing track of what works

If you know which value you changed, restore its previous value and test again from the same device and location. If you do not know the old value, write down the current configuration before changing anything. Then alter only one setting per test and record the result. Router menu names and suitable settings vary by model, so use the manual or support page for your exact router.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Do not change several radio, security, or traffic-control settings together: if performance changes, you will not know which one mattered. A factory reset is a last resort, not a quick speed test. ASUS notes that resetting clears router settings, so you will need to configure the router again. Check ASUS’s reset guidance or the instructions for your router before proceeding.

Channel selection

Nearby Wi-Fi networks can compete for airtime. Automatic channel selection is a sensible baseline when your router offers it. If the router does not offer automatic selection, Apple advises choosing the channel that performs best in the local environment rather than assuming one channel is best everywhere. Compare results at your normal location after each change. Apple’s recommended router settings explain its general guidance.

  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

Channel width

There is no channel width that is best for every router and home. Wider channels can offer more throughput in suitable conditions, but competing networks and devices can make reliability worse. The recommendations differ by context: TP-Link’s slow-internet guidance suggests trying 40 MHz on 2.4 GHz and 80 or 160 MHz on 5 GHz, while Apple recommends 20 MHz on 2.4 GHz to avoid reliability and performance problems around competing networks and 2.4 GHz devices. These are not universal prescriptions. If your router exposes the control, compare supported narrower and wider options in your environment and keep the one that performs reliably. TP-Link’s guidance and Apple’s guidance address different conditions.

Band and radio-mode compatibility

Check which band and radio mode the router is using, and whether the test device supports them. A faster or newer band helps only if the client supports it and the signal reaches the place where you use the device. Microsoft notes that 6 GHz requires a Wi-Fi 6E-capable router and client; older adapters may also lack support for a selected band or channel width. Microsoft’s guidance on Wi-Fi and home layout covers band capability and environmental factors.

  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Check signal and device capability at the actual location

Test once near the router with as few obstacles as practical, then repeat from the usual location. If performance improves nearby but falls off in the usual spot, the issue is likely tied to signal reach or obstructions rather than the internet plan’s maximum speed. For 6 GHz in particular, distance and obstructions matter; do not judge a band only by a test close to the router.

Confirm that the affected device supports the router’s selected band and mode. Older Wi-Fi adapters or drivers may not work well with wider channels. On a Windows device, check its Wi-Fi adapter and driver state and use Microsoft’s steps for connection problems before making further router changes. Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide covers device-side checks.

Rule out traffic limits and router software

Quality of Service (QoS) settings and parental controls can prioritize, restrict, or limit traffic for a device or service. If one might be responsible, temporarily disable the relevant control as a diagnostic, test again, then restore the policy you intend to use and verify the result. Do not leave protections or limits disabled simply because a short test is faster. TP-Link lists QoS and parental controls among settings to check when speeds are slow. See its troubleshooting guidance.

Check router firmware against the manufacturer’s instructions, particularly if the slowdown began after an update or a setting change exposed a compatibility issue. Use the support instructions for the exact model; do not assume that menu labels or firmware procedures are interchangeable between brands. NETGEAR also recommends checking firmware, device differences, and channel interference when troubleshooting slow connections. NETGEAR’s slow-connection guidance provides its model-family support path.

Choose the next step from the test results

  • Wired and wireless tests are both slow, including a direct-modem test: Contact your ISP or investigate the modem and WAN connection; repeated channel changes are unlikely to address the underlying fault.
  • Wired service is normal, but several Wi-Fi devices are slow: Revisit the router’s channel, width, band or mode, placement, and traffic controls, changing one item at a time.
  • One client is still slow while others are normal: Check that client’s supported bands and modes, adapter configuration, and driver or operating-system state.
  • You cannot access the router settings or the equipment is ISP-managed: Ask the ISP for model-specific support rather than trying undocumented settings.
