If you see it in Task Manager or Steam shows you as “in-game”, that alone doesn’t mean something is broken. Below is how to tell which behavior you’re seeing and how to change it.
Three different things people call “always running”
- It starts with Windows. This is the automatic startup option, and it launches without showing a main window. Wallpaper Engine’s startup FAQ describes it.
- A process stays after you close the window. Wallpaper playback runs separately from the settings and Workshop interface, so closing the interface doesn’t end the wallpaper.
- Steam says you’re “in-game”. This is a Steam status issue, covered below, and it isn’t the same as heavy resource use.
Stop it launching at Windows startup
- Open Wallpaper Engine and go to Settings > General.
- Turn off the automatic startup option.
- Restart Windows and check whether it still appears.
If it still launches with its own option disabled, the vendor documentation doesn’t identify the cause on a given PC. Check Windows startup apps, scheduled tasks, and any shortcuts or other software that might start it. That is local diagnosis, not a vendor-confirmed explanation.

What “high priority” startup does
The high-priority option registers a Windows service so Wallpaper Engine starts before your other configured startup programs. According to the same FAQ, it does not improve performance, and antivirus software may block it, making it less reliable. If startup misbehaves, check antivirus and firewall settings and whether the Wallpaper Engine executables are set to run as administrator.
The window is closed but a process remains
This is expected. The settings and Workshop window is a separate interface from wallpaper playback. To fully quit, exit from the Wallpaper Engine icon in the Windows system tray.

Steam always shows “in-game”
According to Wallpaper Engine’s Steam status page, the in-game indicator is expected while Workshop browsing or editor features are open. If it persists after those windows close:
- Look for wallpaperui.exe in Task Manager; a leftover UI process can keep the status active.
- Remember that Steam reconnecting can leave a misleading status.
- As a workaround for recurring problems, the page suggests launching the program directly from its installation directory.
- Creating a
nosteam.txtfile disables Steam integration. It also disables Workshop downloads, updates, and uploads, though already-downloaded wallpapers remain available. Treat it as a last resort.
Reduce resource use while gaming
A running process isn’t necessarily a performance problem. Wallpaper Engine’s performance guide covers the controls in Settings > Performance:

| Target one troublesome game | Application rule with the condition “Is running” on that game’s executable | Applies only to that title |
Valve’s Steam performance troubleshooting guide says cutting unnecessary startup and background programs may help game performance. It doesn’t show that Wallpaper Engine is the cause of any particular slowdown, so change the settings above and see whether your game actually improves.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors32-bit vs 64-bit version quirks
Per the 32-bit and 64-bit FAQ, quit Wallpaper Engine completely from the tray icon before launching the other version through Steam. Otherwise Steam just brings the already-running instance forward. After choosing the version, toggle automatic startup in the General tab so that version is the one registered. The FAQ says visual quality and performance are the same; web wallpapers and the UI use 32-bit executables regardless.
