If your laptop has no sound, first check whether the problem affects one app or every audio source. Then verify mute and volume controls, select the intended output device, and disconnect external audio while testing the built-in speakers. If those quick checks do not help, follow the Windows or macOS steps below before considering driver support or service.
First, find out where the sound problem is
Play audio from a second app or website. If sound fails only in one app, meeting, game, browser tab, or webpage player, focus on that app’s controls. If every source is silent, check system volume and output routing next.

On a Mac, Apple notes that if audio plays from any app or website through the built-in speakers, the speakers are working; the issue may be specific to the app or webpage. A normal-looking volume icon alone does not establish that sound is going to the intended device: Windows may be sending it to a monitor, headset, or other output instead.
Check every mute and volume control
- Raise the laptop’s system volume and make sure mute is off. Check the keyboard’s volume or mute keys as well as the on-screen control.
- Check the app’s own volume and mute setting. Video players, meeting apps, games, and media players may have separate controls.
- If audio is in a browser, check the tab, the webpage’s player, and the browser’s own mute setting.
- For headphones or external speakers, check their physical volume and mute controls, and confirm they are powered on if applicable.
Some apps and speakers have controls separate from the operating system, so a high system volume does not rule out a muted app or accessory. Microsoft’s Windows audio guide and Apple’s Mac speaker guide both call out these separate controls.

- IMPORTANT UPDATE NOTICE -- Based on extensive customer advises, we’ve rolled out two major upgrades to this desktop speaker. First, volume control buttons have been added. Second, we increased the product thickness for a larger sound cavity, bringing moderate improvements in sound quality and volume.
- HIGH-QUALITY SOUND -- This laptop speaker is equipped with Dual 3W High-Excursion Drivers & Passive Radiator, delivering louder sound, wider dynamic range, enhanced bass and reduced distortion.
- ONE CABLE FOR BOTH AUDIO & POWER -- No 3.5mm AUX jack needed. Just one USB cable delivers both audio signal and power for the computer speaker to cut down cable clutter.
- WIDE SYSTEM COMPATIBILITY -- This upgraded PC speaker works with Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS laptops & PCs, compatible with HP, Lenovo, ThinkPad, ASUS, Dell, Samsung, Acer, LG and more. Simply install the latest audio driver for smooth audio playback.
- PLUG-N-PLAY FOR SIMPLE SETUP -- For Windows PCs: Plug the speaker into your computer’s USB port, click the taskbar “Speaker” icon, then select “USB Speakers” as your playback device, and you’re ready.
Choose the output device you actually want
Windows 11 or Windows 10
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Under the output options, select the intended device—such as the laptop speakers, headphones, or a connected speaker.
- If more than one playback device is listed, verify the selection rather than relying on the taskbar volume icon. A display may be selected even if it has no speakers.
Microsoft also documents setting the intended playback device as the default. The available labels and layout can differ slightly between Windows versions and devices. See Microsoft’s no-sound troubleshooting steps.
macOS
- Open the Apple menu, then choose System Settings > Sound > Output. On older macOS versions, the path is System Preferences > Sound > Output.
- Select Built-in Speakers to test the laptop’s internal speakers.
- Raise Output volume and make sure Mute is not selected.
These are Apple’s recommended checks for internal-speaker problems. See Apple Support for its guidance.

- External computer speaker in Black (set of 2) for amplifying PC or laptop audio
- USB-Powered from USB port of PC or Laptop
- In-line volume control for easy access
- Blue LED lights; metal finish and scratch-free padded base
- Bottom radiator for “springy” bass sound
Disconnect external audio and compare
Unplug headphones and disconnect USB or Thunderbolt audio devices and audio-capable displays. Then test the built-in speakers again. A connected headset or display can receive sound instead of the laptop speakers, and Windows speakers may not work while headphones are plugged in.
If available, a known-good wired or USB headset can help compare whether another output path produces sound. Treat this only as a diagnostic comparison: a successful or failed headset test does not, by itself, identify which laptop component is faulty.

If you use Windows, try these software checks
Do these after checking volume and the selected output. The paths can vary somewhat by Windows version.
Inspect the mixer and audio device
- Open the Volume mixer and make sure the affected app is not muted or turned down.
- In Settings > System > Sound, confirm that the intended output device is enabled and selected.
- Turn off audio enhancements as a troubleshooting test. If that changes nothing, you can restore the setting later.
For Windows 11, Microsoft directs users to the audio troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Running the built-in diagnostic is a reasonable next check if the mixer and device settings look correct. Microsoft’s no-sound guide includes these software checks.

Check updates and drivers
- Check Windows Update for relevant updates and restart the laptop if prompted. Save open work before restarting.
- If sound stopped after an update, consider rolling back the audio driver using Windows’ driver options.
- If needed, update or reinstall the audio driver. If Windows does not find a suitable one, check the laptop manufacturer’s support page for the model-specific driver.
Driver changes are later troubleshooting steps, not the first thing to try. Microsoft describes updating, reinstalling, and rolling back drivers in its broader Windows audio troubleshooting guide.
When to contact the laptop maker or Apple
Contact the laptop manufacturer if the intended output device is missing, the internal speakers remain silent after the relevant checks, or you suspect physical damage. The manufacturer can provide model-specific driver guidance and hardware diagnosis. Apple says service might be needed if a Mac’s internal speakers still do not work after its listed checks.

See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice.
