To make a hi-hat less harsh, first check whether it is simply too loud in the mix. If the level is right, use a restrained EQ cut on the offending frequency; if harshness appears mainly on louder hits, try a de-esser. There is no universal hi-hat EQ preset: the useful setting depends on the recording and the rest of the arrangement.
Start with level and the full mix
Listen to the complete mix before reaching for an EQ. A hi-hat can sound piercing because it is too prominent, not because its tone needs reshaping. Lower its fader slightly and listen again. Panning and overall balance are also part of the basic mixing decisions alongside EQ, as Focusrite’s mixing fundamentals guide explains.

Avoid judging the fix only while the hat is soloed. A bright sound that seems excessive by itself may provide useful definition in context, while a small level change may solve a problem that a large EQ cut would create.

For a sharp or piercing quality, investigate the broad 3–8 kHz region. This is a search area, not a prescribed cut: iZotope identifies 3–7 kHz as a potential harshness range, while Audient points to 5–8 kHz for cymbal and vocal harshness or sibilance. The exact frequency varies with the hat, microphone, and mix.

- [10 Band EQ] Fully functional 10-band graphic equalizer suitable for any instrument
- [15 dB Boost/Cut Range] Sliders for output level/EQ level control, ±15 dB adjustable gain range for each band
- [Durable and Solid Construction] A well made durable and whole aluminium-alloy design. Plug polarity is positive on the barrel and negative in the center
- [True Bypass] Deliver a transparent tone. During transmission, the signal remains fully intact, passing through the effects pedal with no popping, buzzing or electric noise, let alone the loss of strength and frequencies. NOTICE: Power Adapter NOT included
- Play the full mix at a comfortable, moderate monitoring level.
- On a parametric EQ, use a narrow boost and sweep through the suspected range to locate the frequency that makes the unpleasant quality most obvious.
- Replace the boost with a small cut at that frequency, then compare with EQ bypassed at matched loudness.
- Reduce the cut or undo it if the hat loses too much brightness or the mix sounds less energetic.
The temporary boost is a way to locate a problem, not a sound to leave in place. iZotope’s EQ cheat sheet and Audient’s frequency guide offer useful regions to check, but neither establishes a fixed setting for every recording.
Remove unwanted low-frequency content only when it is there
If the hi-hat channel contains rumble or other unnecessary low-frequency energy, try a high-pass filter. Raise its cutoff gradually and stop once the unwanted content is reduced. Back off if the hat loses useful body or if the snare changes noticeably.

- Compact EQ pedal with 7 bands of adjustable EQ sliders
- Guitar-optimized frequencies: 100 Hz, 200 Hz, 400 Hz, 800 Hz, 1.6 kHz, 3.2 kHz, and 6.4 kHz
- Maximum tonal flexibility with ±15dB boost/cut per band
- Level slider for balancing the overall volume or boosting the sound
- BOSS five-year warranty
Yamaha’s live-sound EQ guide includes a high-pass filter in its example high-hat channel settings, and Image-Line’s mixing advice recommends filtering low-frequency content from hats when it is not needed. Neither gives a universal cutoff for all recordings.

Choose the tool that matches the problem
| What you hear | First move to try | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| The hat is consistently too prominent | Lower its fader; consider panning in the context of the drum mix. | Do not use a tonal cut to solve a level problem if the balance change is sufficient. |
| A sharp frequency is present on most hits | Make a small, targeted parametric EQ cut. | Too much cutting can dull the hat and remove useful rhythmic brightness. |
| Only some hits have an irritating sibilant edge | Test a de-esser and tune it to act on the harsh component. | Too much de-essing can make the part sound dull or uneven. |
| The channel contains unwanted rumble or low-end energy | Use a high-pass filter and raise its cutoff only as far as needed. | On a multi-miked kit, aggressive filtering may affect the snare or change the combined drum sound. |
iZotope notes that a de-esser can be more transparent than a static EQ cut when the sibilance varies from hit to hit and a permanent cut colors the whole sound. Its guidance also places possible resonances around 4–8 kHz. See iZotope’s hi-hat mixing tips. A de-esser is not automatically better: use it when the problem is intermittent, and check that it is not suppressing the hat’s useful attack.

Check the drum mix for side effects
After processing, listen again with the complete kit and mix. In a multi-miked recording, filtering a hi-hat microphone can also change snare sound captured by that microphone. If the snare or other cymbals shift in tone, level, or apparent position, undo the filter and reconsider the balance, panning, polarity, or compression before making a more aggressive EQ move. iZotope’s guide cautions that filtering choices can affect other sounds in multi-miked drums; Focusrite’s overview discusses balance and panning as core mix decisions.

Yamaha’s live-sound example suggests turning on a high-pass filter, reducing the low band by 6–10 dB, and boosting around 4–5 kHz by 2–4 dB to add sizzle. Those figures describe one example channel setting, not a general recipe for removing harshness. A boost in that range could make an already piercing hat more abrasive, and the low-band reduction may not suit every source.

- PRECISE ±18dB TONE SCULPTING – 6 GUITAR-OPTIMIZED BANDS: Shape your sound with surgical precision across six carefully selected frequencies (100Hz, 200Hz, 400Hz, 800Hz, 1.6kHz, 3.2kHz). Each slider delivers ±18dB of boost or cut—enough to transform a muddy amp into a tight, articulate rig or add warmth to a brittle clean tone. Players describe it as "the most essential tone shaping tool in my signal chain."
- ILLUMINATED SLIDERS WITH CENTER DETENT – STAGE-READY VISIBILITY: Each slider lights up when the pedal is engaged, making on-the-fly adjustments effortless even on dark stages. The sliders feature a reassuring center detent that lightly locks at the midpoint, so you always know where neutral is without looking. Smooth, responsive action with just the right resistance—no accidental bumps.
- TRUE BYPASS WITH PURE SIGNAL PATH: True bypass switching preserves your guitar's natural tone when the pedal is disengaged—zero coloration and zero signal degradation. Unlike some EQ pedals that add noise even when off, the JF-11 keeps your signal chain clean and quiet. For the lowest noise floor and to minimize any switch pop, we recommend using a regulated 9V DC power supply (not included).
- VERSATILE BEYOND EQ – BOOST, SHAPE & TRANSFORM: Use it as a solo boost by raising mids and highs to cut through the mix. Place it before a distortion pedal to completely reshape its character. Cut muddy lows for tighter rhythm tones, or max all sliders into a cooking tube amp for a natural, touch-sensitive overdrive. It even works on bass and acoustic guitars for extra tonal control and feedback prevention.
- JOYO QUALITY & AFTER-SALES CONFIDENCE: Housed in a rugged aluminum alloy chassis with a baked stoving varnish finish—built to survive gigging, touring, and constant stomping. Backed by JOYO's decade-plus reputation for crafting budget-friendly gear that punches far above its weight. If you ever encounter noise, switch pop, or performance issues, our dedicated support team is ready to assist through your Amazon order page.
Use an example setting as a prompt to listen, not as a preset to copy. Different recordings, microphone bleed, and arrangement density can all change what the hi-hat needs.

A final comparison that keeps the hat musical
- Compare processed and bypassed versions at matched loudness so a louder version does not seem better simply because it is louder.
- Make the comparison in the full mix, including the snare and other cymbals.
- Keep the correction only if it reduces the unpleasant edge without taking away the brightness and rhythmic detail the arrangement needs.
