Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStarlink slowdowns and dropouts can start with one device’s Wi-Fi, a VPN, a blocked dish view, weather, damaged or loose cabling, extra networking gear, or network congestion. Start with the Starlink app, then check whether one device or every device is affected. That distinction helps you test the right part of the connection before changing hardware.
Start with the Starlink app and identify how widespread the problem is
- Check for alerts. Open the Starlink app and look for outage, obstruction, or hardware alerts. Use its obstruction tool to see whether trees, buildings, poles, debris, or foliage may be blocking the dish’s view. The view can change as vegetation grows or snow accumulates. See Starlink’s obstruction guidance.
- Test more than one device. If just one phone or computer is slow, focus first on that device, its Wi-Fi connection, and any VPN. If several devices are affected, investigate the router, dish view, cables, weather, added networking equipment, and possible congestion.
Keep the test conditions consistent where possible: use the same device and location, note the Wi-Fi band and time, and record the weather. This makes comparisons more meaningful.

If one device is slow, check its Wi-Fi and VPN
Move the affected device close to the Starlink router and test again. If the connection improves, the local Wi-Fi link may be the bottleneck rather than the satellite connection. Starlink says 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi reaches farther, while 5 GHz is faster but works best near the router. If your device is using 2.4 GHz, compare results on 5 GHz nearby.
Temporarily turn off a VPN and repeat the test. A VPN can change the route traffic takes and affect speed, so compare with it both on and off before treating the result as a Starlink-wide problem. Starlink’s slow-speed troubleshooting guide covers device, Wi-Fi, and VPN checks.
#1 Best Overall
- 🔌 Advanced Connectivity: Supports both wired (Ethernet) and wireless setup to expand your Starlink mesh network seamlessly.
- 🧩 Easy Integration: Works with your existing Starlink system (excluding Gen 1); ideal for adding extra mesh nodes.
- 🛠️ Versatile Installation: Mount on the wall or place on a table. Includes power supply, mounting stand, screws, and drywall anchors.
- 📶 Optimized Performance: Best placed within two rooms of the main router; avoid obstructions like concrete walls and metal appliances.
- 📱 Mesh Compatibility: Compatible with Starlink Gen 2 Router, Starlink Gen 3 Router, Starlink Mini Router, and Starlink Mini Kit. Not compatible for wireless mesh networking with Starlink Gen 1 routers or third-party mesh systems.
Use speed tests to separate Wi-Fi from the Starlink connection
Where available, the Starlink app’s Advanced Speed Test compares three links: device to router, router to internet, and device to internet. A poor device-to-router result points toward local Wi-Fi; a stronger result near the router or on 5 GHz helps confirm that. If router-to-internet is also poor, continue with dish, weather, equipment, and congestion checks rather than blaming Wi-Fi alone.
For a useful comparison, keep the device, position, band, time of day, and weather as similar as possible between tests. Starlink’s expected speeds vary by location and plan; there is no single universal speed threshold that establishes whether every connection is performing normally. Consult the local expectations referenced in Starlink’s slow-speed guide.
Inspect cables and temporarily remove extra networking equipment
Check accessible connectors for looseness, visible damage, kinks, or signs of weather exposure. Do not force a connector. If you use a third-party router, mesh system, or switch, temporarily remove it from the setup and retest with the Starlink equipment. If performance improves, add components back one at a time to identify which part changes the result.

- DUAL BAND TECHNOLOGY: Features 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands for optimal performance, ensuring smooth streaming, gaming, and video calls without interference
- COMPACT DESIGN: Travel-friendly size makes it perfect for portable use while maintaining full router functionality and reliable connectivity
- UNIVERSAL COMPATIBILITY: Works seamlessly with both Starlink systems and standard Internet Service Providers for flexible deployment options
- MESH NETWORK READY: Supports mesh network expansion capabilities, allowing you to extend coverage throughout your space as needed
- QUICK SETUP: Plug-and-play installation gets you connected rapidly, with intuitive configuration for both home and office environments
For the Ethernet connection between the Starlink router and external network gear described in Starlink’s help page, the company recommends Cat5e or higher; a lower-rated Ethernet cable may limit speeds on that connection. This is not advice to replace the kit-specific cable that connects the dish. Starlink’s third-party router guide explains checks for added networking gear.
Check dish visibility, location, and weather
If the app reports obstructions, use its scan to identify what may be blocking the dish. Clear an obstruction only if it is safe, or consider a clearer installation location or a compatible mount or pole to raise the dish. Do not climb onto a roof, tower, or tree or work near hazards; use a qualified installer when needed.
Significant weather can degrade service by attenuating radio signals. Moderate to heavy rain, snow, or hail may cause brief dropouts, and Starlink says some degradation should resolve after the weather passes. After a storm, check accessible hardware and connections for damage. See Starlink’s guidance on weather and service quality and obstructions.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Compare busy and quieter times
If service slows during busy periods but improves at other times, network congestion may be contributing. Starlink says performance can decrease during peak network times. One Starlink article about third-party routers describes peak hours as typically 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. local time; treat that as guidance from that article, not a universal schedule. Compare tests at different times using the same device and setup. See the slow-speed guide and third-party router guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCollect evidence before contacting Starlink Support
If the problem persists after these checks, keep a concise record so Support can see when and where it occurs. Starlink’s troubleshooting checklist recommends several tests, including a Cloudflare speed test, checking whether a VPN is active when the detected network is not SpaceX, traceroute for latency, and 200-packet ping tests for packet loss.
- Dates and times when slowdowns or interruptions occur
- Weather conditions and whether the issue changes after the weather passes
- Whether one device or multiple devices are affected
- Starlink app alerts and obstruction results
- Speed-test results, including the test type and Wi-Fi band where relevant
- Whether removing third-party routers, mesh nodes, or switches changed performance
Submit persistent issues through Starlink Support with these details. Starlink’s intermittent internet troubleshooting guide also covers connection interruptions.
