PHP Username Keeps Displaying After Logout? Fix Comment Authorship

If comments keep showing a username after logout, stop trusting hidden author fields and separate the current session from each comment’s stored authorship.

If a PHP username keeps displaying after logout—or new comments still show the previous username—the key is to separate the identity for the current request from the identity stored with each comment. Choose a new comment’s author on the server from the authenticated session, and render older comments from their own saved authorship data.

Why the username can remain after logout

In the SitePoint thread “Username keeps displaying after logout” (May 8–9, 2023), the poster wanted comments to use the logged-in username or “Anonymous” when logged out. Their form placed a name in a hidden input, and the comment-processing code saved the submitted name. The reported symptom was that new comments continued to show the username after logout.

A hidden input is still data sent by the browser. It is not proof that a person is logged in, and a visitor can change it before submitting the form. A stale value in the form can therefore explain a submitted old name; more fundamentally, the server should not use a form field to decide an authenticated commenter’s identity. Participants in the thread advised deriving the name during server-side form processing instead.

Choose the author when processing a new comment

When the submission reaches your server, determine whether the request has an authenticated user using the session state your application maintains. Use that user’s identity for the comment. If there is no authenticated user, apply the site’s explicit anonymous-author rule—for example, the label “Anonymous.” Do not accept a posted username or hidden author field as the authority for either decision.

  • FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.
  • Authenticated request: associate the comment with the authenticated account.
  • Anonymous request: use the anonymous identity or label chosen by the site, determined in server-side code.

The related SitePoint discussion, “Display users name when logged in on the page they are visiting” (May 6–8, 2023), likewise cautions against trusting a hidden comment-name field. These are forum participants’ implementation recommendations, not official PHP documentation.

Keep a comment’s author separate from the current viewer

Session state tells your application who is making the current request; it does not identify the author of every comment already in the database. Each comment needs its own authorship data. When showing a historical comment, display the identity associated with that comment—not whichever user happens to be logged in now.

A participant in the first thread suggested saving a stable user ID with a registered user’s comment and resolving the display name when rendering. That avoids treating a mutable display name as the account’s only identifier. Anonymous comments need a deliberate representation that remains available to the display logic. The original poster’s later attempt did not solve this distinction: comments appeared under the currently logged-in user or had blank names after logout.

Check both the submission path and the display path

  • At submission: inspect the server-side comment handler and confirm it selects the author from authenticated session state or the anonymous fallback, rather than from $_POST or a hidden input.
  • At storage: confirm the new comment is saved with its own author identity or registered-user identifier.
  • At rendering: confirm the comment display reads that comment’s stored authorship, instead of substituting the current session username.
  • At logout: check that the application’s logout flow updates the authentication state it uses for later requests. Unsetting $_SESSION['username'] was suggested in the forum, but by itself it does not correct a design that assigns historical comments the current viewer’s name.

The first thread’s example also included direct SQL interpolation of comment data. Do not copy that pattern: use parameterized queries for values supplied to database statements. The forum exchange is troubleshooting advice, not a tested final implementation, so adapt the identity and storage design to your application.
