OBS lag has three common causes, and each calls for a different fix: rendering lag means OBS lacks GPU time to build the scene, encoding overload means it cannot encode the video reliably, and dropped frames point to an unstable or insufficient network connection to the streaming server. Check which warning OBS reports before changing settings; a scene tweak will not fix a weak network, and a faster internet connection will not solve GPU rendering lag.
How to tell what kind of OBS lag you have
Look at OBS’s performance indicators and the log for the affected recording or stream. Match the reported problem to the appropriate troubleshooting path below rather than treating every “choppy stream” as the same issue.

- “Frames missed due to rendering lag”: OBS is struggling to composite and render scenes, usually because the GPU is busy.
- “Encoding overloaded”: the selected encoder and video workload are exceeding available encoding capacity.
- Dropped frames: OBS cannot maintain a stable connection to the remote streaming server at the configured bitrate.
These can have different causes, and more than one may occur at once. OBS cautions that meeting its system requirements does not guarantee that a machine can stream or record successfully; the workload also depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. See the OBS Studio system requirements.
Fix rendering lag when OBS or your game is using too much GPU
OBS uses the GPU to composite and render every scene. If a game is running without a frame-rate limit, or another GPU-heavy application is competing for resources, OBS may not get enough time to render frames. This is a common explanation when “my game runs fine but OBS can’t keep up.”

Reduce GPU demand before changing capture quality
- On Windows, run OBS as administrator. This is one of OBS’s recommended troubleshooting steps for performance issues.
- Close or pause other GPU-heavy applications and check whether rendering lag improves.
- Cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync. An uncapped game can consume GPU capacity OBS needs.
- Lower the game’s graphics settings if the GPU remains saturated.
- Reduce OBS output resolution or frame rate if needed. If 60 fps is unstable, OBS suggests trying 30 fps. These are troubleshooting options, not universal best settings.
Lowering the base canvas resolution is a more disruptive change. OBS does not generally recommend it unless GPU resources are severely constrained. For further steps, see OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.
Simplify scenes that are expensive to render
Sources, filters, browser sources, media, and complex scenes can add workload. Disable or reduce expensive filters and browser sources to test their impact; use image or media sources for static assets where practical; and keep scene collections focused on the scenes you need. Test one change at a time so you can identify which part of the setup affects performance.

Check GPU assignment on Windows laptops and multi-GPU systems
On a system with integrated and discrete GPUs, confirm that OBS and the game are assigned appropriately for the capture method. OBS warns that running OBS on an integrated GPU while a game runs on a discrete GPU can prevent Game Capture from working and can hurt performance. The Windows GPU-selection steps differ between Game/Window Capture and Display Capture; follow the OBS GPU Selection Guide for your capture type.
Fix an “encoding overloaded” warning
Encoding is separate from scene rendering. If OBS reports encoding overload, review the selected encoder alongside output resolution, frame rate, and scene workload. OBS generally recommends an available hardware encoder for performance because it moves encoding work from the CPU to a dedicated component. The available option depends on your operating system and hardware.

| Encoder | Where it may be available |
|---|---|
| NVIDIA NVENC | Systems with supported NVIDIA hardware |
| AMD AMF | Systems with supported AMD hardware |
| Intel Quick Sync | Systems with supported Intel hardware |
| Apple VideoToolbox | Apple systems |
| x264 | OBS’s included software encoder |
Encoder availability and capabilities differ by platform and hardware generation. OBS notes that older hardware encoder generations may produce lower image quality at the same bitrate than software encoding, so switching to hardware encoding is a performance option, not a guarantee of identical image quality. Consult OBS Hardware Encoding for platform-specific details.
If the warning continues, lower the workload through output resolution or frame rate and simplify demanding scenes. There is no single encoder choice or setting combination that is best for every computer and stream.

Fix dropped frames by troubleshooting the network path
OBS defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate. Start with network conditions, not scene filters. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide recommends checking the following:
Recommended Free Tools
- Try a different ingest server to see whether the selected server is contributing to the problem.
- Lower the video bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the current setting. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee; connection stability and the streaming platform’s bitrate limits still matter.
- Check VPN, security, and network-prioritization software that could interfere with OBS’s connection.
- Test a wired connection. OBS recommends Ethernet because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. If you are currently using Wi-Fi, compare results over a stable wired connection before considering a cable purchase.
- Ask your ISP about persistent problems before replacing equipment. Faulty cables, routers, network cards, or other network devices are possible causes, but a product swap is not a first diagnosis.
When to try the Windows HAGS setting
Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) is a conditional Windows troubleshooting step, not a universal performance switch. OBS’s HAGS guidance, published May 7, 2023, says it may cause OBS performance issues or failures with hardware encoders. If you are experiencing those issues, turn HAGS off in Windows Settings and restart the computer to test whether it helps. Because Windows settings labels and paths can change, use the current Windows Settings search for “Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling” rather than relying on an outdated menu path. See OBS’s HAGS guidance.
Quick Recap
Use a measured, reversible troubleshooting order
- Identify the OBS symptom in its performance indicators and log: rendering lag, encoding overload, or dropped frames.
- Change only the relevant workload first: GPU demand and scenes for rendering lag; encoder and output workload for encoding overload; server, bitrate, and connection for dropped frames.
- Retest after each change. Keep a note of the setting changed and whether the warning or stream improved.
- Use the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point if you are unsure how to balance stream settings for your computer and connection.
- Consider hardware only after diagnosis. OBS system compatibility alone does not establish that a particular workload is within a computer’s capacity.
