An “ARRIS box” could be a cable TV set-top box, a media gateway that combines TV and networking, or a cable internet gateway. Check the model number on the label on the underside or rear, then note which cables are connected. Those two details help identify what the device does and which setup or support instructions apply.
What does an ARRIS box do?
ARRIS makes several kinds of equipment, so the brand name alone does not tell you whether a box is for television, internet, or both. ARRIS documentation distinguishes set-top boxes, IP clients, and media gateways; internet gateways are another category. ARRIS’s Whole Home Solution document and the model-specific manuals describe different equipment and functions.

| Type | Main job | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| TV set-top box | Receives a provider’s television service and sends it to a TV. | Provider, model, supported TV service, available outputs, remote, and whether recording features are listed. |
| Media gateway | Combines television functions with some networking functions. | Video service, modem standard, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, MoCA, and model-specific storage. |
| Internet gateway | Connects to cable internet and shares the connection with devices over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. | Provider approval, DOCSIS standard, Wi-Fi features, Ethernet ports, and voice support if needed. |
These are categories, not a universal comparison of every ARRIS model. Features and service requirements depend on the exact equipment and provider.

- Find the model number. Look on the underside or rear label and record the complete model name or number. Do not rely on the ARRIS logo alone.
- Note the connected cables. Check whether coaxial cable runs to the box and whether HDMI or another video cable connects it to a television. Also note any Ethernet cables connected to a router, computer, or other device.
- Match the label to the service. Ask whether the box is part of your provider’s TV service, cable internet service, or a combined setup. If unsure, check the provider’s equipment page or the manual for the exact model.
Provider support pages may separate TV equipment from internet equipment. For example, Xfinity’s manuals and safety sheets page organizes resources for internet equipment and TV boxes separately.

What each type can do
TV set-top box
A set-top box receives television service from a provider and outputs it to a television. Available channels and features depend on the provider and the specific model. ARRIS documentation also lists IP clients as a separate product category, so do not assume every TV-related ARRIS device works the same way.
Media gateway
Some media gateways combine video delivery and home networking. For example, the ARRIS DCX3635 datasheet describes QAM/IP video, an integrated cable modem, optional wireless router, MoCA, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi. It lists 500 GB and 1 TB internal hard-drive configurations for that model; those capacities should not be assumed for other ARRIS equipment.

- Approved for Cox, Spectrum and Xfinity internet along with other US cable internet providers. Is NOT compatible with ATT, CenturyLink, Verizon, Froniter or other Fiber Optic, DSL or Satellite internet service providers.
- Does NOT include Wi-Fi and Does NOT support cable digital voice service.
- The SURFboard SB8200 is compatible with major U.S. cable internet providers including Cox, Spectrum, Xfinity and others. It is approved for cable internet speed plans up to 1 Gbps. Check your cable ISP website to confirm compatibility.
- 32 downstream x 8 upstream DOCSIS 3.0 bonded channels, or 2 downstream x 2 upstream OFDM DOCSIS 3.1 channels.
- Two 1-Gigabit Ethernet ports
Internet gateway
A cable internet gateway combines a modem and router functions. The SURFboard SBG8300 user guide describes a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem, wireless access point, and four-port Ethernet router. On that model, devices can connect by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. An older model, the SBG6700-AC user guide, describes a DOCSIS 3.0 gateway. Standards and capabilities vary by model.
Before replacing an ARRIS internet gateway
Do not choose a replacement just because it is ARRIS-branded. Confirm that your internet provider supports the exact model and that it meets your service requirements. Provider compatibility and activation are part of using a replacement gateway, and the sources here do not establish a universal or current compatibility list.

- Supports IPv4 and IPv6 Internet standard.
- Requires Cable Internet Service. If you are unsure of your service, please contact your CABLE provider to confirm.
- Record the full model number of your current device.
- Check your provider’s equipment guidance for the exact replacement model.
- Confirm the modem standard and features you need, such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet ports.
- Follow the provider’s activation instructions for the replacement.
Setup and troubleshooting: start with the model
There is no single setup sequence or reset procedure for every ARRIS box. The right instructions depend on whether the device handles TV, internet, or both, as well as its model and provider.
- Photograph or write down the model label.
- Identify whether the coax connection serves TV, internet, or a combined service.
- Open the exact model’s manual or the provider’s support page for that equipment type.
- Follow the documented steps for your model. Avoid a factory reset as an initial troubleshooting step: it can erase personalized configuration, and the reviewed manuals do not establish one reset method for all ARRIS products.
For covered equipment, ARRIS’s Whole Home Solution document states: “This equipment contains no user-serviceable parts.” It warns against attempting to service that equipment yourself. Use provider support or the applicable model documentation rather than opening the device or attempting internal repairs.
