A slow Windows PC can have several causes at once, so start by identifying when it slows down and which resource is under pressure. Check Task Manager, Storage settings, and Windows Update before making changes. These steps can help, but software tweaks may do little for a PC limited by older hardware.
Why is my PC slow? Start with the symptoms
Note whether the slowdown happens during startup, after opening a particular app, while multitasking, or all the time. Then open Task Manager and review Processes and Performance to see whether CPU, memory, or disk activity appears high. A single high reading is not proof of a fault; look for a pattern that coincides with the slowdown.

For startup problems, open Task Manager > Startup apps and review the listed apps and their startup impact. Microsoft explains these views in its guide to configuring startup applications.

Seven reasons your Windows PC may be slow
1. The drive has too little free space
Limited storage can affect performance and leave less room for Windows updates. Check Settings > System > Storage. Review temporary files and cleanup recommendations before removing anything. Windows also includes Storage Sense and Disk Cleanup; use these built-in tools rather than manually deleting unfamiliar system folders. Microsoft’s performance guidance describes storage cleanup options.

2. Too many apps launch at startup
Apps that start automatically can slow startup and affect performance afterward. Review Settings > Apps > Startup or Task Manager > Startup apps. Task Manager shows startup-impact information. Turn off automatic launch only for apps you recognize and do not need immediately; leave unfamiliar or essential items alone.
3. Open apps, tabs, or background work consume resources
Many open apps or browser tabs, along with background processes, can use CPU or memory and keep the drive busy. Close work you are not using, then check Task Manager’s Processes and Performance views again. Investigate which resource is high instead of assuming that every process or brief spike is a problem.

4. Unwanted or malicious software is using resources
Some malware can consume CPU and disk resources, and potentially unwanted apps can slow a PC. If you notice suspicious behavior or software you do not recognize, run a scan with Windows Security and remove apps you recognize as unwanted. Microsoft provides advice on protecting a PC from unwanted software. Slowness alone does not establish that malware is present.

It’s the perfect household essential and an ideal gift for husbands, dads, sons, or friends who love electronics repair and DIY projects.
6. Appearance or power settings prioritize something other than speed
Windows visual effects use system resources. In Windows search, look for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, open the performance options, and consider Adjust for best performance. This reduces visual effects and may make the interface less polished.
On a laptop, you can also consider Settings > System > Power & battery and choose a performance-oriented power mode if that option is available. Microsoft warns that best-performance mode uses more power; a laptop may drain faster and run warmer. Treat this as an optional trade-off, not a default fix.

7. The storage drive or other hardware is the bottleneck
Older hardware may limit what software changes can accomplish. Microsoft notes that HDD storage is typically slower than SSD or eMMC storage. If your compatible PC uses an HDD, an internal SSD upgrade may be worth assessing, but first confirm that the device supports a replacement or upgrade. Neither compatibility nor a particular speed gain can be assumed.

Microsoft lists these kinds of symptoms in its guidance on when it may be time for a new PC. A hardware assessment is more useful than repeatedly applying tweaks when the underlying components are the constraint.

- Identify when it slows down. Separate startup trouble from app-specific, multitasking, or all-day slowness.
- Check Task Manager. Review Processes and Performance for CPU, memory, and disk activity; use Startup apps to identify apps that launch automatically.
- Close unused workloads. Quit apps and tabs you do not need, then see whether the symptom changes.
- Check storage and updates. Review Settings > System > Storage and Settings > Windows Update.
- Address likely causes selectively. Disable only unnecessary startup apps, use Windows cleanup tools for space, and scan with Windows Security if unwanted software is suspected.
- Restart and reassess. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it helped.
- Consider recovery only if needed. If the slowdown began after an update or remains severe, review Windows recovery options and start with the least disruptive route. Back up important files first: some recovery options can cause data loss. See Microsoft’s Windows recovery options.
Why is my computer slow at startup?
Startup apps are a common place to investigate first. Compare the startup symptom with Task Manager’s startup-impact details, then disable only recognized apps that do not need to launch automatically. If startup is still slow, check the Processes and Performance views after signing in; the cause may be storage, background work, updates, or a hardware limit rather than startup apps alone.
Does an SSD make an old PC faster?
An SSD can be a sensible option to assess when a compatible PC still uses an HDD, because HDDs are typically slower than SSD or eMMC storage. Check the device’s upgradeability before buying or planning a replacement. The available guidance does not establish compatibility for a particular model or promise a specific performance gain, and an SSD will not resolve every CPU, memory, software, or age-related limitation.
