A missing or incomplete WhatsApp Business link preview usually points to one of four issues: the page lacks usable Open Graph tags, WhatsApp cannot fetch the page or its image, the tags appear only after JavaScript runs, or the preview is showing stale cached information. Start by checking the HTML returned for the exact URL you share, then verify the preview image is publicly accessible.
What WhatsApp needs to make a link preview
The Open Graph protocol lets a web page provide information for rich previews on social platforms. Its core properties are og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url, placed in the document’s <head>. The protocol describes og:description as optional but generally recommended. See the Open Graph protocol.

For each page you want to share, make sure those values describe that specific page. A basic example is:

</head>Use the final, intended page URL for og:url and an absolute, publicly reachable URL for og:image. The protocol also supports optional image properties for a secure URL, MIME type, dimensions and alt text. Adding those does not establish that WhatsApp requires particular values or image dimensions.

Check the exact URL and the HTML it returns
- Confirm the shared address. Make sure it is the page you intend to preview, not a redirect, login-only address or a different URL variant. The page should respond successfully without a logged-in browser session.
- Inspect the server-returned HTML. Open the page source or fetch its response and examine the initial HTML, especially the
<head>. Confirm that the page-specific Open Graph tags are present in that response. - Check whether JavaScript adds the tags later. If metadata appears only after client-side JavaScript runs, a crawler that reads the initial response may miss it. - Verify the image URL separately. Open the exact
og:imageaddress without being logged in. It should return the intended image rather than an error page, sign-in screen or blocked response.
If the preview has no image or is incomplete
A text-only card can occur when the image URL is inaccessible to an external crawler, even if the image looks fine in your own browser. Check that it is public and that your site’s firewall, access controls or robots policy are not preventing crawler access. Also confirm that the og:image value is correct and points directly to the intended asset.
Do not rely on a particular image-size threshold as a guaranteed WhatsApp rule: the available sources do not establish a universal WhatsApp-specific minimum or maximum. The Open Graph protocol supports optional image metadata such as dimensions and alt text, but that is not evidence of a WhatsApp size requirement.

If the card still shows old information
WhatsApp may be showing previously fetched preview data after you change a page’s title, description or image. The available sources do not establish a dependable cache duration or an official guaranteed refresh method.

- First confirm that the corrected tags and image are present in the current page response.
- Try a changed page URL or a versioned image URL to test whether a fresh fetch produces the updated card. Treat this as a diagnostic workaround, not a guaranteed cache-clearing method.
- Share the link in a fresh chat and compare the result. A third-party sharing debugger should not be treated as proof that WhatsApp’s cached preview has refreshed.

A screenshot can help you check what the page visibly renders, but it does not replace inspecting the returned HTML or confirming that the crawler can fetch the image. - No useful card appears: Check the page’s initial HTML for the core Open Graph fields in its
<head>. - The title or image is wrong: Inspect metadata for the exact URL you are sharing, rather than a site-wide default or a different page variant.
- The preview has text but no thumbnail: Test whether the
og:imageURL is publicly retrievable and check for crawler blocks. - Your browser shows tags but the preview does not: Verify that the tags are in the original HTML response, not added only after JavaScript runs.
- Recent edits do not appear: Recheck the live response, then test a changed page or versioned image URL and share in a fresh chat. There is no established cache-expiry estimate to rely on.
What the evidence does not establish
The Open Graph protocol documents the page metadata fields; it is not a current official WhatsApp preview specification. The WhatsApp-specific failure modes above come from secondary technical guidance. The reviewed sources do not establish a dedicated official WhatsApp preview debugger, a guaranteed cache refresh, an exact cache lifetime or a universal image-size threshold.
