Blurry text in a Selenium screenshot usually is not fixed by one Selenium setting. First check the browser’s CSS viewport and device pixel ratio (DPR), inspect the PNG’s actual pixel dimensions at native scale, and rule out image resizing after capture. If text is missing or looks substituted rather than merely soft, investigate font loading and the browser/operating-system environment.
Why Selenium screenshots can look blurry
Selenium captures what the browser rendered; capture success and sharpness are separate questions. A screenshot can look soft because the image is being displayed larger than its captured dimensions, because the browser rendered at an unexpected viewport or DPR, or because an image-processing step resampled it. Missing or differently shaped letters can instead point to fonts or rendering-environment differences.

Chrome defines device pixel ratio as the ratio between physical pixels on the hardware screen and logical CSS pixels. DPR tells Chrome how many screen pixels to use when drawing a CSS pixel. A screenshot’s pixel dimensions therefore need to be considered alongside the page’s CSS viewport and DPR, rather than guessed from how large the image appears in a viewer. - Record the environment. Note browser and driver versions, operating system or container image, headless or headed mode, viewport dimensions, and whether you captured the full window or one element. Keep these fixed for comparisons.
- Set a deliberate window size. Use Selenium’s window API to apply the same size for each run. Then query
window.innerWidth,window.innerHeight, andwindow.devicePixelRatioin the page. Selenium documents window sizing and both page and element screenshot capture. Selenium documentation - Inspect the PNG’s real dimensions. Compare its width and height in pixels with the intended CSS viewport and DPR. Open the original PNG at 100% or native scale; if it appears sharp there but soft in a document, browser tab, or report, check whether that display is enlarging or resampling it.
- Check the capture scope. Capture the affected element as well as the page. If the element image is clear but the page image looks soft, investigate how the full screenshot is displayed or transformed downstream.
- Check fonts and readiness. If characters are absent, substituted, or change between runs, wait for page content and web fonts to load before capturing. Compare runs in the same browser and operating-system environment and check that required fonts are installed.
- Change one variable at a time. Chrome DevTools device mode can select a DPR and distinguish mobile and desktop rendering. Use it as a controlled comparison, recording the browser-specific controls and versions. Emulation is a diagnostic, not a guaranteed sharpness fix. Chrome device-mode documentation
Run a minimal Python check
This example fixes the window size, reports the viewport and DPR, saves the current window as a PNG, and checks Selenium’s save result. Adjust the window dimensions to the CSS viewport you need, and keep them unchanged while comparing captures.

Selenium documents save_screenshot as saving the current window to PNG; its return value indicates whether the file save succeeded. A successful save does not by itself guarantee that the image will look sharp after later resizing or display. Selenium documentation
How to increase screenshot resolution
Start by confirming the intended CSS viewport and the reported DPR, then inspect the PNG dimensions. If the file has fewer pixels than you need, use a browser- and version-specific method to control the capture environment only after verifying it for your installed Selenium and browser. There is no universal Selenium sharpness switch established here, and changing a headless flag alone should not be treated as a general fix.

For a controlled diagnosis, compare captures with the same page, window size, browser, operating system, and font environment. Change only the DPR or emulation setting, then compare the original files at native scale. A DPR comparison can reveal whether rendering scale is involved; it does not prove that every page will become sharper at a higher value.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Text is uniformly soft, but character shapes are correct | PNG dimensions, CSS viewport, DPR, and whether a viewer enlarged the image | Open the original PNG at native scale and compare its pixel dimensions with the viewport and DPR. |
| Text is missing, substituted, or changes between captures | Font loading, installed fonts, and changes in browser or operating system | Wait for fonts and page content, then compare in the same environment. |
| One component is soft but the rest is clear | Whether the issue appears in an element screenshot as well as a page screenshot | Use element capture to isolate the component; inspect any downstream processing of the page image. |
| The screenshot looks clear locally but soft in a report or web page | Display size and transformations applied after saving | Compare the source PNG at native scale with the displayed copy. |
| Changing a headless option does not help | Whether viewport, DPR, fonts, or image scaling actually changed | Return to the measured checks and vary one factor at a time rather than assuming a flag controls sharpness. |

If your goal is a clean website capture rather than debugging a Selenium rendering environment, ScreenshotNeo takes a screenshot or PDF with one GET request. It accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
