Typing that appears late in Firefox can be caused by an extension, theme, graphics acceleration, a busy tab, Firefox profile settings, a particular website’s editor, or a platform-specific issue. There is no single fix for every case. Start by testing the same text field in Firefox Troubleshoot Mode: the result tells you which causes to investigate next.
First, find out where the delay happens
Restart Firefox and test the field again. If the problem continues, compare a few cases before changing settings:

- Does typing lag on one website or several?
- Does it happen in a short text box as well as a very large one?
- Do other applications on your computer also respond slowly to typing?
Mozilla includes restarting the computer among its general troubleshooting steps. If other applications lag too, check whether the problem is limited to Firefox before changing browser settings. Mozilla’s Firefox troubleshooting guide covers general diagnostic steps.
Use Troubleshoot Mode to narrow down the cause
Firefox Troubleshoot Mode temporarily disables extensions, uses the default theme, and turns off hardware acceleration. It changes all three at once, so a successful test narrows the cause to something among those changes but does not identify which one.

- Open the Firefox menu.
- Select Help, then Troubleshoot Mode.
- Choose to restart Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode.
- Return to the same website and field where you noticed the delay, then test typing.
Mozilla’s guidance is direct: “If your problem persists in Troubleshoot Mode, it is not being caused by an extension, theme or hardware acceleration.” Read Mozilla’s Troubleshoot Mode instructions for details.
If typing works normally in Troubleshoot Mode
One of the components changed by Troubleshoot Mode may be involved. Return to normal mode and test the likely causes separately so you can identify what changes the behavior.

Check extensions
Disable extensions, then re-enable them one at a time, testing the same field after each change. If you have many extensions, test in smaller groups first, then narrow down the group that brings the delay back.
Check the theme
Switch to Firefox’s default theme and test again. Troubleshoot Mode uses that theme, so a difference between modes may point to the theme or another changed component.

- The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.
Test hardware acceleration
- Open Settings and select General.
- Under Performance, clear the option to use recommended performance settings if needed to reveal the acceleration control.
- Turn off hardware acceleration, restart Firefox, and test typing again.
If turning it off helps, Mozilla suggests updating your graphics drivers or continuing without hardware acceleration. The setting and its effect can depend on your graphics hardware and software environment. Mozilla explains the acceleration test here.
If typing still lags in Troubleshoot Mode
For that test, Mozilla rules out extensions, themes, and hardware acceleration as the cause. Next, look for resource use, unusual Firefox settings, or profile-specific behavior.

Look for busy tabs or extensions
Open about:performance or about:processes and check whether a tab or extension is consuming substantial resources. Close or disable the item you suspect, then test the same field again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsReview Firefox’s troubleshooting information
Open about:support to inspect information about your Firefox installation, modified preferences, extensions, and graphics. This can help identify unusual settings or installation details relevant to the problem. Mozilla documents the page in its Troubleshooting Information guide.

Test with a new Firefox profile if ordinary checks fail
If the delay remains after the other checks, Mozilla documents trying a new Firefox profile as a diagnostic step. A new profile helps determine whether the problem is tied to the existing profile’s state. Treat it as a test rather than immediately abandoning your old profile; make sure you understand what data and settings you need before switching profiles.

| What you observe | What to investigate |
|---|---|
| Delay disappears in Troubleshoot Mode | Test extensions, the theme, and hardware acceleration separately. |
| Delay persists in Troubleshoot Mode | Check resource use, Firefox preferences and profile state, and system context. |
| Delay occurs in one site’s editor only | Compare with a plain text field on another site. The available sources do not establish a universal fix for a site-specific editor. |
| Delay is most noticeable in very large fields | Record the operating system and Firefox version, and compare the behavior in smaller fields. A Linux community report described a large-field issue, but it does not establish the cause on other systems. |
| Other applications lag too | Investigate whether the slowdown is broader than Firefox before treating it as a browser-only problem. |
Be cautious with platform-specific workarounds
Two Mozilla Support community reports describe changes that helped particular users, not general-purpose Firefox fixes:
- A Windows 11 support case from November 2022 reported improvement after a volunteer suggested setting
accessibility.force_disabledto1, then restarting Firefox. - A Linux report from March 2024 described lag in very large text fields and said enabling native Wayland with
MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1resolved that user’s issue.
These are historical, individual reports rather than official recommendations or guaranteed solutions. Before trying a platform-specific change, note your operating system, Firefox version, how Firefox was installed, and whether the delay is limited to large fields. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it affects the problem.
