Why Is My TV Antenna Getting No Channels? 6 Fixes to Try

Check antenna mode and cable connections, confirm VHF/UHF compatibility, reposition the antenna, and rescan. FCC reception predictions are estimates, not guarantees of indoor service.

If your TV finds no channels after an antenna scan, check that it is set to antenna or over-the-air mode, inspect the antenna cable, and make sure your antenna suits the local stations’ bands. Then reposition it and scan again. A scan can map signals the tuner can receive, but it cannot create a signal that is too weak or unavailable at your location.

1. Confirm the TV is scanning the antenna input

Check the TV’s input or channel setup and select the antenna, broadcast, or over-the-air option—not cable. The exact label and menu path vary by TV. Then run the TV’s channel scan so its tuner can identify and map the digital channels it can receive. If you are unsure where to find the option, consult the TV’s manual or on-screen help.

2. Inspect the antenna cable and connections

Check that the antenna lead is firmly connected at both the antenna and the TV. Look along the cable for visible damage and make sure connectors are not loose. A broken or disconnected lead-in wire can interfere with reception; the FCC lists it among possible reception problems in its TV owner guidance. Repair or replace a cable only if inspection indicates a problem.

3. Check whether the antenna supports local station bands

Broadcast stations may use VHF, UHF, or both. An antenna needs suitable elements for the bands used by the stations you want; an “HDTV” label alone does not establish that it performs well on VHF. The FCC’s antenna reception guidance explains the band considerations.

Mount the antenna high, near a window facing local broadcast towers (Check "dtv gov maps" for available channels), to avoid obstacles and interference. If you use rabbit-ear rods, the FCC advises: “For the best reception of channels 2-6, extend the rods all the way out.” For channels 7-13, it says: “For the best reception of channels 7-13, reduce the length of the rods to12-18 inches.” These are specific FCC suggestions for rabbit-ear antennas, not a guarantee that any placement will receive a particular station.

4. Move and redirect the antenna, then scan again

Small placement changes can affect reception. Try placing the antenna higher, near a window, farther from electronics, and in different directions. After each meaningful change, run another channel scan so the TV can map what it receives in the new position. The FCC recommends experimenting with antenna placement and direction in its consumer advisory.

5. Check predicted reception for your location

The FCC Digital TV Reception Map can help you see predicted signals for a location. Treat the result as an estimate, not a promise of indoor reception: the map’s traditional model assumes an outdoor antenna 30 feet above ground. Building materials, nearby buildings and trees, terrain, weather, and antenna hardware can all affect what your TV actually receives.

6. Consider a different or outdoor antenna if the checks do not help

If the TV is configured correctly, the cable is sound, and careful repositioning still produces no channels, the antenna may not suit the local station bands or reception conditions. Compare antennas by the VHF and UHF support local stations require and by whether indoor or outdoor placement is practical for your home. The FCC notes that a rooftop antenna may be needed in some instances; its reception map’s outdoor-height assumption may not describe your indoor results.

When to scan again

Rescan after moving the antenna, and when a local station changes frequency. A rescan updates the tuner’s channel map; it does not repair a damaged cable, improve an incompatible antenna, or overcome an unavailable signal. The FCC described the need to rescan after station frequency changes in its February 4, 2019 announcement about TV rescan assistance.
