This is a keyboard layout, not by itself evidence that the tablet is damaged. The steps to put it back together depend on your tablet and keyboard app.
First, check whether the keyboard is split or floating
Tap a text field to show the onscreen keyboard. If the keys appear in two separated groups, it is likely split mode. A floating keyboard is different: it is one smaller block that can move around the screen. Apple and Samsung both document these as distinct keyboard layouts.

On an iPad, you can restore a floating keyboard by spreading two fingers apart on it or choosing More > Full. For split mode, use the device-specific steps below.
Put a split keyboard back together
iPad
Apple says split keyboard is available only on iPad mini and iPad (9th generation and earlier). On a supported iPad, touch and hold the keyboard button, then slide to Merge or Dock and Merge. You can also check Settings > General > Keyboard > Split Keyboard.

Samsung Galaxy tablet using Samsung Keyboard
Open Samsung Keyboard settings, choose Mode, then select Standard keyboard. Depending on the screen, you may be able to open Modes from the keyboard’s expanded toolbar.

Other tablets or keyboard apps
Apple’s and Samsung’s menu paths do not apply universally. Check your tablet model and the name of the onscreen keyboard app, then follow that manufacturer’s instructions; settings can differ by model, software version, and keyboard provider.

If the keyboard still looks wrong
- Show the keyboard by tapping a text field, then identify whether it is two separated halves or one small movable block.
- For two halves, select the appropriate merge or standard-mode control for your tablet and keyboard app.
- For a small movable block on iPad, spread two fingers apart on the keyboard or choose More > Full.
- If the relevant option is missing, confirm the exact tablet model and keyboard app; split mode is model-limited on iPad, and Samsung’s menus vary.
- If the layout remains abnormal after selecting the standard or full-size mode, contact the tablet manufacturer’s support for model-specific guidance.
The available support guidance does not establish a universal reset procedure or show that a split keyboard indicates hardware failure. An accidental touch or setting change may explain the change, but the precise cause cannot be determined without details about the device and how it was used.
