If people on a call hear their own voices coming back, audio is usually being picked up by a microphone and sent back into the call. The source may be your setup—or another participant’s. If your own voice instead sounds hollow or cavernous, the room may be reverberant rather than caught in an audio loop. Identify which symptom you have, then follow the matching checks below.
First, tell call echo from room reverberation
| What you hear | What to investigate | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Other callers hear their own voices returned after someone speaks. | A speaker being picked up by a microphone, duplicate active audio, or an echo-cancellation problem. | Find which participant’s setup is returning the sound; disconnect duplicate audio and reduce speaker pickup. |
| Your voice sounds hollow, distant, or as if you are speaking in a cavern. | Reflections from the room reaching the microphone. | Consider the room and microphone placement; do not assume the call has an audio loop. |
These problems can coexist. Echo cancellation is designed to address returned speaker audio; it cannot make a reverberant room acoustically dry. Microsoft’s explanation of how Teams processes calls distinguishes speaker-to-microphone echo from room reverberation, while Zoom notes that noise reduction does not remove room reverberation in its Zoom Rooms audio guidance.

Find whose device is sending the echo
In a group call, the person who hears the echo is not necessarily the person causing it. Zoom lists several common setups that can return audio: one person joining through both a computer and a phone, nearby participants using speakers on the same call, or multiple computers with active audio in one conference room. Loud speakers, failed echo cancellation, and microphone problems can also contribute.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Ask participants to mute one at a time and listen for whether the echo stops.
- If necessary, mute everyone, then have them unmute one at a time until the echo returns.
- When the echo stops as a particular participant mutes, check that person’s devices and audio connections first.
Muting a microphone alone may not be enough: the device’s speaker can remain on and continue playing call audio. Zoom describes this distinction in its meeting echo troubleshooting guidance.

Remove duplicate audio paths
Make sure only one endpoint in a person’s setup—or among nearby people sharing a room—is handling call audio.
- If someone joined by computer and telephone, disconnect audio from one of them.
- If several computers are in the same conference room, disconnect computer audio on the extra devices.
- If two nearby people are on the same call, leave call audio active on only one nearby device.
These checks target the loop itself; simply muting one microphone while its speaker continues playing can leave the problem in place.

Reduce sound picked up from speakers
- Lower the call speaker volume so less audio reaches the microphone.
- Try headphones if the speaker is still being picked up. A headset with a microphone is another option when the current microphone or speaker arrangement is causing poor audio; Google Meet includes both types of suggestions in its audio and video troubleshooting help.
- Mute your microphone when you are not speaking if that suits the call.
Check the app’s selected microphone and speakers
Confirm that the call app is using the microphone and output device you intend. For example, plugging in a headset does not by itself confirm that the app has selected the headset’s microphone. Google Meet’s troubleshooting guidance includes checking the selected devices. If the wrong input or output is active, correct it in the app’s audio settings and test the call again.
Review processing settings only after the basic checks
Zoom says its desktop app includes software echo cancellation for echo created by a microphone or room acoustics. Its advanced audio controls are intended for technical users; changing them without understanding the device setup can worsen the experience. Start with the connections, volume, and device selection rather than toggling advanced controls at random. Zoom documents those controls and their cautions in Managing advanced audio settings.

Zoom also says noise suppression and echo cancellation are on by default. Its musician and live-performance profiles can preserve more microphone audio without those filters, so they are not a first-line choice for ordinary meeting echo. See Zoom’s description of audio settings during a meeting if you need to check the profile in use.
If the problem is on Windows
- Check that Windows is sending sound to the intended output device.
- If the output is correct but audio still behaves unexpectedly, consider disabling audio enhancements; Microsoft says this can resolve some sound problems.
- On Windows 11, Microsoft points users to the Get Help audio troubleshooter for guided checks.
These are output and audio troubleshooting steps, not a substitute for identifying a duplicate device or a participant returning call audio. Microsoft’s instructions for Windows 10 and 11 are in Fix sound or audio problems in Windows.

For a dedicated Zoom Room
Zoom Rooms has room-specific speaker, microphone, and audio-echo tests. If echo or reverberation persists in a room system, use its test tools and check the installation, including microphone placement and firmware where appropriate. This guidance is for Zoom Rooms installations, not a universal step for a personal computer. Zoom also cautions that a reverberant room can still sound reverberant to people in it and to microphones even when processing is used; see its Zoom Rooms Audio Guidelines.

Platform-specific notes
- Zoom meetings: Zoom’s support page covers duplicate computer and phone audio, nearby devices, and isolating the participant whose setup is returning sound. Its version requirements can change, so consult the live page rather than relying on an old client-version number.
- Zoom desktop: Echo cancellation and advanced audio settings vary by operating system and setup. Use the advanced controls only when you understand the devices involved.
- Google Meet: In-call Troubleshooting & help may display echo advice. Its guidance includes headphones, lower speaker volume, muting when not speaking, and confirming device selection.
- Microsoft Teams: Microsoft’s June 13, 2022 article is useful for understanding echo versus reverberation; it is explanatory background, not a guarantee of identical behavior in every current Teams version.
