Telegram’s API documentation recommends 800×800 pixels and supports square videos up to 1080×1080. FFmpeg can crop, scale and transcode the clip, but framing, duration and color handling need to suit your source footage.
What Telegram requires for an animated profile video
Telegram’s user-profile photo documentation specifies square MPEG-4 videos, supports dimensions up to 1080×1080 and recommends 800×800. The cited user-profile API pages do not establish a universal maximum duration or file size for these videos. Avoid relying on a duration or size limit unless Telegram shows one for your upload flow.
Prepare the iPhone clip before converting
Start with the original camera file, often a .MOV, and inspect its properties before choosing a crop or color workflow. iPhone videos can differ in orientation metadata, frame rate and HDR characteristics; a single command cannot guarantee correct framing or color for every clip.

Install an FFmpeg build that includes libx264 if you plan to use the example below. FFmpeg’s documentation describes transcoding and encoding with libx264; its filter reference documents crop and scale operations. See the FFmpeg documentation and FFmpeg filters documentation.
Choose square framing: crop or pad
Crop to fill the square
Cropping fills the square without adding margins, but removes parts of the original frame. A centered crop works only if the subject remains inside the center; adjust the crop position when the important action is elsewhere. FFmpeg documents the crop filter in its filter reference.

Pad to preserve the whole frame
Padding keeps the full image visible, but creates empty or blurred margins around footage that is not square. Choose it when cutting off the edges would remove the subject or useful context. The visual trade-off is about composition, not a Telegram requirement.

Use FFmpeg to create an 800×800 MP4 starting point
This illustrative command center-crops the input to a square, scales it to Telegram’s recommended 800×800 dimensions, encodes H.264 video in an MP4 container and removes audio. It is a starting point, not a tested command for every iPhone file; check the output and adjust the crop and duration to your clip.

-t 8to set a duration appropriate for your clip. The cited Telegram references do not establish a universal duration limit. - The crop is centered. If that cuts off the subject, change the crop placement or use padding instead.
-anremoves audio. Omit it if you have a reason to retain an audio stream, though the profile video’s visual result is the focus.-crf 23is an adjustable encoding-quality choice, not a Telegram-prescribed setting. If the output looks poor or is larger than you want, adjust it and review the result.- The
format=yuv420pfilter requests a common pixel format; it does not guarantee accurate HDR-to-SDR color conversion.
Telegram’s user-profile documentation specifies MPEG-4, but does not identify H.264 as the only supported codec. This example uses H.264 as a broadly supported encoding choice, not as a claim that Telegram requires it.
Check the result and upload it
- Play
output.mp4and confirm the subject is framed correctly, the video is square, and the image looks acceptable. If orientation, color or cropping looks wrong, revisit the source properties and adjust the conversion rather than assuming the same settings suit every iPhone clip. - Open Telegram’s profile-photo flow and select the converted video. Review the animated result in the client you are using; client behavior and upload acceptance should not be assumed identical across versions.
- Choose a useful still-preview frame if the upload interface exposes that control. In the user-profile upload API,
video_start_tsspecifies the frame time in seconds. This API field is not itself an instruction that every Telegram client presents the same control.
If Telegram rejects the video or the result looks wrong
- Invalid video: Telegram’s upload method lists
VIDEO_FILE_INVALIDas a possible error. Check that the output is a playable, square MPEG-4 file and try encoding it again with a compatible FFmpeg build. - Subject is cut off: the example uses a center crop. Reposition the crop or pad the image to retain the full frame.
- Preview shows an unhelpful moment: select a better still frame in the available upload interface. The API’s
video_start_tsparameter exists for this purpose when using that API. - Unexpected color or rotation: inspect the source’s orientation and HDR characteristics. The cited FFmpeg references explain encoding and filtering capabilities but do not establish guaranteed color preservation for a particular iPhone clip.
- Upload limit unclear: the cited user-profile API references do not provide a universal file-size or duration ceiling, so an exact limit should not be inferred from them.
Telegram’s Bot API documentation also describes animated profile photos as MPEG-4 and includes a main-frame timestamp, but it is a separate, bot-facing API. Its details should not be treated as the steps or interface for changing a personal account’s profile photo.
