A “No SIM,” “Invalid SIM” or “SIM card is not detected” alert does not automatically mean your phone’s SIM slot is broken. The cause may be a misseated or damaged SIM, a tray that does not fit, an inactive line or carrier restriction, settings, or a phone fault. Check the line and tray first, then test the SIM and handset separately to identify who can help.
First, check whether the SIM is detected
Note the exact message. “No SIM” or “SIM card is not detected” suggests the phone is not recognizing the card; fit, card condition or handset detection may be involved. If the phone recognizes the SIM but shows no service, the issue may instead involve the plan, activation, carrier settings or network availability. This distinction helps narrow the next check, but does not by itself diagnose the fault.

If you use eSIM, skip the physical-tray steps: there is no card to reseat, and your carrier is the right contact for activation or service issues.

1. Confirm the plan and carrier status
Make sure the wireless plan is active and the line is set up for this device. On iPhone, open Settings > General > About and check Carrier Lock. Apple says an unlocked iPhone displays “No SIM restrictions.” A carrier lock or inactive plan can cause an invalid-SIM problem even when the card fits. For a line activation or eSIM issue, contact your carrier. Apple Support: If you see Invalid SIM or No SIM on your iPhone or iPad.

2. Restart and check for carrier settings
Restart the iPhone or iPad. Then open Settings > General > About and check whether a network-provider settings update is offered. Menu wording can vary by operating-system version. Apple Support.
3. Reseat the SIM without forcing the tray
If the device uses a physical SIM, remove and reinstall the card, making sure it sits correctly and the tray closes fully. Use the tray made for your exact phone model. Apple warns that a tray from another model or manufacturer may not fit correctly; Google also notes that SIM trays vary by device. If the tray resists or does not align, stop rather than forcing it, which could damage the phone or tray. Apple Support; Google Android Help: Insert a SIM card.

4. Test the SIM and phone separately
Try the current SIM in another compatible phone, or ask your carrier to test it. If it fails there but another active, compatible SIM works in your phone, ask the carrier whether the original SIM needs replacement. If known-working SIMs are not detected by your phone, the handset may need manufacturer diagnostics or service. Apple recommends testing another SIM and notes that replacement may be needed. 5. Use your phone maker’s diagnostics
On supported Samsung Galaxy devices, check Settings > About phone > Status information > SIM card status. Samsung Members may also offer SIM diagnostics. Names and layouts can vary by device. If the SIM is active and known to work but the phone still will not detect it, contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider. Samsung Support US: SIM card is not detected on your Samsung Galaxy device.

When to stop troubleshooting
- Stop if a tray is jammed, visibly damaged or does not match the phone. Repeatedly pushing or removing it can make damage worse.
- Contact the carrier when the SIM fails in another compatible phone, the plan or activation is uncertain, or the device recognizes the SIM but cannot connect.
- Contact the phone manufacturer or repair service when known-working SIMs are consistently undetected in the handset.
