A screenshot API can differ from an open Chrome window even when both load the same URL. The usual causes are a different browser or host, viewport and device settings, page timing, screenshot options, or browser and application state. Match those conditions in a controlled order; if the difference persists, ask the API provider which browser build and rendering environment it uses.
Why an API screenshot can differ from Chrome
A hosted screenshot service captures a live page in its own environment. Chrome can also capture pages in headless mode, without a visible browser window, and automation tools expose viewport and screenshot settings that affect the result. The URL alone does not guarantee equivalent conditions. Chrome’s headless documentation and provider-specific parameter references illustrate why the capture environment and request settings matter.

Browser build and host
The API may use a different browser build, operating system, fonts, graphics stack, or browser profile than your desktop Chrome. Those differences can affect font shapes, line wrapping, antialiasing, and rendering. The API is not named here, so its actual browser version, host image, installed fonts, and rendering internals are unknown; ask its provider rather than assuming a particular cause.

Viewport width and height are CSS dimensions that influence responsive layout. Also compare device scale factor, mobile mode, touch capability, and user agent if the service exposes them. A named phone-sized viewport does not necessarily emulate a real device’s browser, touch input, user agent, or pixel density. Puppeteer advises setting the viewport before navigation because many sites do not expect a phone viewport to change after load. See its viewport documentation.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Page readiness and timing
A capture taken after a fixed delay may catch a page before scripts, images, or application data have finished rendering. A generic wait can help identify a timing issue, but waiting for a page-specific ready element is usually more precise. Chrome’s headless CLI documentation describes screenshot timeout behavior, and Puppeteer documents waiting for a selector.
Screenshot options
Viewport versus full-page capture, clipping, background transparency, scale, file format, and JPEG quality can change dimensions, crop, transparency, or compression without changing the page’s DOM. Compare the options explicitly; Puppeteer lists them in its screenshot options reference.

Page and browser state
Check that both captures use the same URL, authentication, cookies, locale, color scheme, cache state, and application data. A consent banner, dark-mode setting, or personalized content can make the visible page differ. These are diagnostic possibilities, not established causes in any particular case.

- Record the request and response. Save the API name, full request parameters, response metadata, and browser version if the provider supplies it.
- Match geometry before navigation. Set the same CSS viewport width and height in Chrome and the API. Match device scale factor and mobile, touch, or user-agent emulation where available. The Puppeteer viewport reference explains its viewport controls; a hosted service may expose a different subset.
- Match page state and readiness. Use the same URL, credentials, cookies, locale, and relevant app data. Wait for a meaningful page-specific element or readiness signal. If you suspect late content, compare captures after a controlled delay too.
- Match capture mode and format. Align viewport or full-page mode, clipping, background, scale, and output format. Use PNG while diagnosing pixel differences so lossy JPEG compression does not add another variable.
- Compare dimensions, then appearance. Check output pixel width and height first. A mismatch usually points to viewport, scale, or capture mode. If dimensions match, inspect layout and fonts, then colors and antialiasing.
- Investigate remaining text differences. If line wraps or glyph shapes still vary after geometry and timing match, check fonts and the browser/OS build. The sources here do not establish how to query a third-party API’s installed fonts; ask its provider or reproduce locally in its browser image if one is available.
- Make automation repeatable. Pin browser and automation versions when you control the environment, and set viewport, device scale, readiness conditions, and screenshot options explicitly. Puppeteer documents its viewport and capture controls.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; see the API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for taking screenshots, getting page information, and capturing PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Common mismatch symptoms and what to check
| Symptom | Check first | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Different dimensions or obvious crop | Viewport width and height, device scale, full-page mode, and clipping | Align those values before inspecting colors or fonts. |
| Different layout or line wrapping | Viewport before navigation, mobile emulation, page readiness, fonts, and browser/OS build | Check whether the service actually emulates the device settings you selected. |
| Missing or late content | Navigation timing, async application data, images, and readiness condition | Wait for a page-specific selector or readiness signal; use a controlled delay only as a diagnostic. |
| Color, transparency, or image quality differs | Color scheme, background behavior, format, and JPEG quality | Use PNG during diagnosis and align background and color-scheme settings. |
| Unexpected banner or personalized content | Cookies, authentication, locale, cache, and application state | Confirm both sessions have equivalent state and consent behavior. |
When the provider needs to investigate
If you have matched the controllable settings and still see a difference, send the provider both capture outputs, the exact request, resulting dimensions, capture time, and any response metadata. Ask which browser version, operating system image, font set, and rendering environment were used, and whether the service supports the device and readiness controls you need. Do not assume those implementation details: provider documentation describes that provider’s controls and does not establish how every screenshot API works.
