The Samsung T9’s advertised 2,000 MB/s is a maximum sequential speed, not a guarantee for every computer, cable, or file transfer. Samsung says reaching the maximum requires a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20 Gbps) host connection, a cable that supports the same mode, and UASP enabled. If any part of the connection runs at a slower USB mode—or if you are measuring an ordinary copy rather than a sequential benchmark—the result can be lower.
What does Samsung’s 2,000 MB/s figure mean?
Samsung specifies sequential read speeds of up to 2,000 MB/s for the 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB T9. Its maximum sequential write figure is up to 1,950 MB/s for the 1TB and 2TB models, and up to 2,000 MB/s for the 4TB model. These are published maxima, not expected results for every workload or setup. Samsung notes that performance can vary with the host configuration, cable, and system environment.

The interface requirement matters: the T9 uses USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, which provides a 20 Gbps connection when supported by the host and cable. The drive is backward compatible with earlier USB versions, so it can work through a slower connection without reaching its Gen 2×2 maximum. A USB-C connector, by itself, does not tell you which USB data mode the port or cable supports.

Its October 3, 2023 announcement states that the host and cable must support USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 and UASP must be enabled for maximum sequential speeds. Check the connection before blaming the drive
1. Confirm the computer’s port supports USB 3.2 Gen 2×2
Look up the specification for the exact port or controller you are using, using the computer or motherboard maker’s documentation. The T9’s maximum requires USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20 Gbps) on the host. “USB-C” describes the connector shape, not its data speed, and a generic USB 3.x label may not establish Gen 2×2 support. A port that supports a slower mode can still connect to the T9, but the connection’s capability is lower.
2. Check the cable’s data-speed rating
The cable must also support USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 to meet Samsung’s stated maximum-speed condition. Do not infer its capability from its USB-C plugs or charging behavior. Check the cable’s specifications; if you cannot confirm the rating, test with a cable explicitly specified for Gen 2×2.

3. Verify UASP
Samsung lists UASP support and includes enabled UASP among the conditions for maximum sequential speeds. Check whether the operating system and connection are using UASP rather than assuming it is active. If you are unsure how to verify the mode on your system, consult the computer or operating-system documentation; Samsung’s published information does not establish one universal menu path.
Make sure you are comparing the same kind of speed
A sequential benchmark and an everyday file copy do not measure the same workload. A benchmark’s reported sequential read and write results should be kept separate, and a file-copy rate should be identified as a copy result rather than treated as a sequential benchmark. For a useful comparison, record:

- Whether the result is a read or a write.
- Whether it comes from a sequential benchmark or a file copy, and the benchmark settings or file sizes.
- The T9 capacity and the measured rate.
- The computer model, exact port or controller, cable, and whether UASP is active.
- Whether the speed is steady or falls during the transfer.
Capacity is especially relevant when judging write results: Samsung’s listed maximum is 1,950 MB/s for 1TB and 2TB models, rather than 2,000 MB/s. The read maximum is listed as up to 2,000 MB/s for all three capacities.
If speed drops during a long transfer, check the thermal context
A falling rate during sustained work makes temperature worth checking, but it does not prove that heat is the cause. Samsung lists an operating temperature range of 0°C to 60°C and says the T9’s Dynamic Thermal Guard is designed to minimize potential performance drops from overheating. Samsung does not publish an individual drive’s temperature or a speed-throttling curve in the cited specifications, so the feature alone cannot diagnose your result.

Note the rate near the start of the transfer and later on, along with the drive’s temperature context if available. This helps distinguish a consistently limited connection from a slowdown that develops over time without assigning a cause that the measurements do not establish.

When to collect details for Samsung support
If the host port, cable, and UASP are confirmed and a controlled sequential test is still unexpectedly slow, gather the system and test details before contacting Samsung. Its product specifications list a five-year limited warranty, but coverage and terms depend on the applicable region and should be confirmed with Samsung.
