First check where the color disappears: compare the slide in PowerPoint’s editing view, Slide Show or Reading view, and print preview. If only a printout is grayscale, change PowerPoint’s print color setting. If the whole computer display is grayscale, check your operating system’s color filters. If just one picture is affected, check its picture color effects.
Find out where the color is disappearing
Look at the same slide in PowerPoint’s Normal editing view, then in Slide Show or Reading view, and finally in print preview or on a test print. Note whether the problem affects one image, the whole presentation, or every app on the device. Each pattern points to a different setting.

- Only one picture or graphic is grayscale: inspect that item’s color settings.
- Only one presentation view looks grayscale: compare views and check whether the whole display is affected.
Microsoft’s support instructions cover PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 and several perpetual releases, including PowerPoint 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016, depending on the article. Labels and available options can vary by app version, platform, and printer.

If only the printout is black and white
In PowerPoint, go to File > Print. Under Settings, open the color scheme menu and choose Color for color output. The options shown depend partly on the printer. See Microsoft’s instructions for printing handouts, notes, or slides.

The print modes produce different results:
- Color: prints in color when supported by the printer.
- Grayscale: renders objects as shades of gray. Microsoft notes this can make charts and tables clearer when printing on a noncolor printer.
- Pure Black and White: prints without gray shades and may omit some theme effects, such as embossing and drop shadows.
If the job still comes out monochrome, reopen the print settings and check the selected mode before sending it. PowerPoint can use recently used print settings or settings selected for the document; the available printer options also depend on the printer. Microsoft describes the advanced settings in PowerPoint Options (Advanced).
If the whole screen looks grayscale
When other applications are grayscale too, the cause is likely a system-level display filter rather than a PowerPoint slide setting.

Windows
Open Settings > Accessibility > Color filters and turn the filter off, or choose a different filter instead of Grayscale. You can also press the Windows key, type Color filters, open the setting, and check whether Grayscale is selected. Microsoft includes this route in its PowerPoint accessibility guidance.

Open Apple menu > System Settings > Accessibility > Display > Color Filters and turn the filter off or change it from Grayscale. Older macOS versions may use the label System Preferences instead of System Settings. Microsoft outlines this setting in its image accessibility instructions.

If only one picture or graphic is grayscale
- Select the affected picture.
- Open the Picture Format tab and choose Color.
- Check whether a grayscale or other recolor preset is applied. Choose No Recolor if that option appears.
- If the picture remains altered, use the picture color controls to restore its original colors or reset its color settings.
Microsoft’s image accessibility guidance describes the Color gallery and the No Recolor option. This is the right place to start when the background, text, and other pictures still show color; changing the presentation’s overall theme is unnecessary for an effect applied to one image.
If it happens only in Slide Show or Reading view
Compare the same slide in Normal, Slide Show, and Reading views. Slide Show presents the deck full-screen, while Reading view provides a full-screen way to review it; neither comparison alone proves that a slide-level grayscale setting is responsible. Microsoft describes the view options in its guide to choosing a PowerPoint view.

Check another app while the presentation is open. If the entire display is grayscale, turn to the operating system’s color-filter setting. If only a particular view is affected, the Microsoft support guidance reviewed here does not establish a universal PowerPoint switch that forces slideshow-only grayscale, so treat the view comparison as diagnosis rather than a guaranteed fix.
When grayscale is intentional
Grayscale can help reveal whether a slide relies too heavily on color to communicate meaning. Microsoft advises: “In addition to color, use text, patterns, or shapes to communicate ideas.” Check that labels, patterns, shapes, and contrast still make charts and other visuals understandable without color cues.
